Cell death is a nearly ubiquitous feature of the developing nervous system, and differential death in males and females contributes to several well studied sex differences in neuron number. Nonetheless, the functional importance of neuronal cell death has been subjected to few direct tests. Bax, a pro-apoptotic protein, is required for cell death in many neural regions. Deletion of the Bax gene in mice increases neuron number in several areas and eliminates sex differences in cell number in the brain and spinal cord. Here, sexual and motor behaviors were examined in Bax-/- mice and their wild-

Bipolar disorder is characterized by recurrent manic and depressive episodes. Patients suffering from this disorder experience dramatic mood swings with a wide variety of typical behavioral facets, affecting overall activity, energy, sexual behavior, sense of self, self-esteem, circadian rhythm, cognition, and increased risk for suicide. Effective treatment options are limited and diagnosis can be complicated. To overcome these obstacles, a better understanding of the neurobiology underlying bipolar disorder is needed. Animal models can be useful tools in understanding brain mechanisms associa

Many studies have pointed to vulnerability to stress and stress-related pathologies at different timepoints during an individual's life span. These sensitive windows are usually during periods of neural development, such as embryogenesis, infancy, and adolescence. It is critical to understand how neural circuitry may change as an individual ages in ways that could affect susceptibility to stress. Here we compare two stages in Drosophila melanogaster: sexual immaturity and sexual maturity. We used the genetic resources available in Drosophila to manipulate pre- and postsynaptic dopamine signali

In this paper, we tested the hypothesis that exposure to estrogens of different source and estrogenic potency at early puberty could affect the development of socio-sexual behavior in the male rat. Puberty is regarded as a second stage of the ontogenetic period, in the sexual maturation of mammals, particularly sensitive to gonadal hormone milieu. We treated animals orally, from postnatal day 23 to 30, with an environmentally compatible dose of bisphenol A (BPA, 40 microg/kg/day) and with a dosage of ethinylestradiol (EE, 0.4 microg/kg/day) comparable to the human oral contraceptives. Alcohol exposure during development causes central nervous system alterations in both humans and animals. Although the most common behavioral manifestation of these alterations is a reduction in cognitive abilities, it is becoming increasingly apparent that deficits in social behavior may be very prevalent sequelae of developmental alcohol exposure. In infancy and early childhood, deficits in attachment behavior and state regulation are seen in both alcohol-exposed people and animals, suggesting that these changes are largely the result of the alcohol exposure rather than maternal behavior. The parameters of female and male sexual behavior in 3- and 6- month old female rats which were exposed to an androgen excess (subcutaneous implantation of Silastic capsules containing 5 mg of crystalline testosterone) from the beginning of pubertal period (at the age of 35 days), or within postpubertal period (at the age of 4 months). Hyperandrogenia in pubertal period had no effect on female sexual behavior formation, but it led to appearance of male behavior components in 100% of animals. In female rats which were implanted with testosterone capsules in postpubertal period, sexual disturban

The androgen insensitive, genetically male rat pseudohermaphrodite displays neither masculine or feminine sexual behavior when primed with the appropriate sex hormones. Although in the absence of androgen imprinting the animal develops anatomically as female, our results suggest that feminine differentiation of the brain requires active imprinting by perinatal hormone(s), possibly adrenal progesterone.

To investigate epidemiology of and risk factors for laboratory-confirmed mpox during the 2022 outbreak in Nigeria, we enrolled 265 persons with suspected mpox. A total of 163 (61.5%) were confirmed to have mpox; 137 (84.0%) were adults, 112 (68.7%) male, 143 (87.7%) urban/semi-urban dwellers, 12 (7.4%) self-reported gay men, and 3 (1.8%) female sex workers. Significant risk factors for adults were sexual and nonsexual contact with persons who had mpox, as well as risky sexual behavior. For children, risk factors were close contact with an mpox-positive person and prior animal exposure. Odds of

The effects of perinatal exposure to progesterone (P) and estradiol (E) on sexual differentiation of behavior and morphology were examined by treating male and female gray short-tailed opossums on postnatal day 8 with progesterone alone (P), P plus estradiol (E) (PE), the P receptor antagonist mifepristone/RU486 (MIF), or corn oil control (C) and gonadectomizing them before puberty. When given female hormone replacement therapy in adulthood and tested with intact stimulus males, MIF animals showed less female-typical aggressive threat behavior than animals in other treatment groups. Interleukin-1 (IL-1), a cytokine secreted by activated macrophages, inhibits sexual behavior in female but not male rats. The present study examined the effects of IL-1 on sexual attractiveness of the injected animal and on the sexual responses exhibited by its mating partner. In Experiment 1, a male rat was placed with an estrous female, injected with either IL-1 beta (2 or 10 micrograms/kg) or saline. Males exhibited more mounts and intromissions per ejaculation and longer ejaculation latencies with IL-1- than with saline-injected females. In a second experiment, a male was placed with two e

INTRODUCTION: Depression is a psychiatric disorder with higher incidence in women. Among the most common and less investigated adverse effects of antidepressants are the female sexual dysfunctions. Up to one third of the patients fail to respond to antidepressants; therefore, more treatment alternatives are necessary. The combination of mirtazapine plus venlafaxine, known as "California Rocket Fuel" has shown to be an option for treatment-resistant depression. However, there are no reports of the effects of this combination in animal models and its action on female sexual behavior is unknown.

Cannabis sativa preparations (hashish, marijuana) are the most widely used illicit drugs during pregnancy in Western countries. The possible long-term consequences for the child of in utero exposure to cannabis derivatives are still poorly understood. Animal models of perinatal cannabinoid exposure provide a useful tool for examining the developmental effects of cannabinoids. Behavioral consequences of maternal exposure to either cannabis preparations or to its main psychoactive component, delta 9-tetrahydrocannabinol (THC) in rat models are reviewed in this paper. Maternal exposure to cannabi

BACKGROUND: Hypertension is a major public health epidemic that is highly associated with sexual dysfunction in both men and women. Despite its high prevalence, clinical and animal literature on the underlying mechanisms of sexual dysfunction in hypertensive women is remarkably limited.
METHODS: Using a well-established rodent model of renovascular hypertension-the 2-kidney, 1-clip (2K1C) Goldblatt model-we investigated possible reproductive deficits in female rats. We evaluated several aspects of reproductive function in hypertensive female rats: estrous cycle, sexual behavior, ovulation, an

Naloxone in the doses of 4 or 16 mg/kg failed to affect copulatory behavior of testosterone-treated castrated male rats. Morphine 10 mg/kg, administered 60 min before behavioral observation, reduced the proportion of animals displaying sexual behavior. Doses of 2.5 or 5 mg/kg reduced the latency to the second ejaculation, whereas the few animals still copulating after morphine 10 mg/kg showed a reduced latency to the first ejaculation. The same doses of morphine administered 5 min before behavioral observation produced a dose-dependent reduction of mount, intromission and ejaculation percentag

The deposition of androgens significantly influences livestock meat quality, yet traditional surgical castration methods involving testicular removal raise concerns about animal welfare due to their association with stress and behavioral changes. To address these issues, this study compared two approaches-surgical castration (testicular removal) and immunocastration (retention of testicular tissue)-to evaluate their psychological and behavioral impacts in mice across domains such as sexual behavior, emotional regulation, locomotor activity, social interaction, and memory performance. Results d

Genomic imprinting is an epigenetic phenomenon in mammals that affects brain development and behavior. Imprinting involves the regulation of allelic expression for some genes in offspring that depends on whether alleles are inherited from mothers compared to fathers, and is thought to provide parental control over offspring social behavior phenotypes. Imprinted gene expression is prevalent in the mammalian brain, and human imprinted gene mutations are associated with neurodevelopmental disorders and neurodivergent social behavior in Prader-Willi Syndrome, Angelman Syndrome, and autism. Masculinization and feminization of rat sexual behavior has been supposed to occur during a short postnatal period. However, much data have made it evident that these processes may continue until adolescence. In the present study, we evaluated whether androgen treatment of females from postnatal day 20 and onwards could alter sexual motivation and behavior in a male direction. Juveniles were ovariectomized on day 20 and concurrently implanted with Silastic capsules containing either testosterone or dihydrotestosterone. Controls were implanted with an empty capsule. Tests for sexual incentive m

The optimization of avoidance behaviors in response to stress is an instinctual life function universally present in animals. In many sexually dimorphic animals, males exhibit higher stress resistance than females, but there have been no reports of comparative studies on stress resistance in sexually dimorphic hermaphrodites capable of reproducing alone. In the present study, we aimed to utilize a reversal/turn behavioral choice to conduct a comparative analysis of optimized avoidance behavior patterns in hermaphrodite and male Caenorhabditis elegans. We found that C. elegans males showed grea

Problematic sexual behaviors are frequently encountered in the treatment of patients suffering Dissociative Identity Disorder and related forms of dissociative disorders. These may include unfortunate patterns of ready acquiescence or submission to overtly or potentially aggressive or sexual approaches/encounters, subtle and/or overt seductive signaling and behaviors, and even overt sexually provocative patterns of verbalizations and actions. This paper discusses the possibility that in some instances, sexual behavior has become weaponized; that is, deployed in circumstances under which assert

The ability of androgens to stimulate masculine sexual behavior is thought to depend on the aromatization of such androgens to estrogens. In this scheme, reduced androgens such as dihydrotestosterone (DHT) which cannot be aromatized, are thought to exert major peripheral but little or no central nervous system influences on the display of masculine sexual behavior. Further, an early report that DHT can induce lordosis, an estrogen (E) dependent behavior, led to a notion that DHT may effect behavior through metabolic intermediates such as 5 alpha-androstane-3 beta, 17 beta-diol (ADIOL) which th
