Scoping review of HIV-related intersectional stigma among sexual and gender minorities in sub-Saharan Africa.

OBJECTIVES: Sexual and gender minority (SGM) populations in sub-Saharan Africa (SSA) are disproportionately impacted by HIV and often face multiple HIV-related stigmas. Addressing these stigmas could reduce SGM HIV vulnerability but little is known about how the stigmas operate and intersect. Intersectional stigma offers a lens for understanding the experiences of stigmatised populations and refers to the synergistic negative health effects of various systems of oppression on individuals with multiple stigmatised identities, behaviours or conditions. This review aims to (1) assess how often an

Covariates of hazardous alcohol use among sexual and gender minorities in Texas: Identifying the most vulnerable.

BACKGROUND: Information is limited on the prevalence of hazardous drinking and associated covariates among sexual and gender minority (SGM) persons. These analyses estimated the prevalence of hazardous drinking and identified associated covariates. METHODS: A total of 1273 SGM adolescents and adults living in Texas completed an online survey between March 2016 and January 2017. Variables associated with hazardous drinking at the bivariate-level (p < 0.10) were entered into multiple logistic regression models to estimate the strength of their association. RESULTS: More than a third (39.1%) of

Healthcare Providers' Perspectives on Anoreceptive Intercourse in Sexual and Gender Minorities With Ileal Pouch Anal Anastomosis.

INTRODUCTION: Evidence-based recommendations for sexual practices regarding anoreceptive intercourse (ARI) do not exist in patients with inflammatory bowel diseases undergoing restorative proctocolectomy with ileal pouch anal anastomosis (IPAA). This study surveys providers on perspectives and attitudes related to sexual practices after IPAA. METHODS: We developed a 23-item survey and distributed it to providers caring for patients with inflammatory bowel diseases. RESULTS: 95% of providers believe that it is important to discuss sexual orientation or practices before IPAA, but only 27% rout

Sustaining an HIV Prevention and Wellness Program for Sexual Gender Minorities during the COVID-19 Pandemic.

Improving mental health, body image, and financial stability is paramount to achieving viral suppression and maintaining HIV-negative status for minoritized communities. The purpose of this paper is to describe the lessons learned from maintenance of an HIV prevention and wellness program during the COVID-19 pandemic. A three-session program was implemented in a hybrid format to account for county-wide restrictions and reopening processes. Lessons learned include the utility of a hybrid format, importance of CBPR partnership, innovation in virtual platform, value of social media presence and u

A Mixed-Method Assessment of a Pilot Peer Advocate Intervention for Rural Gender and Sexual Minorities.

Mental health disparities affect lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, and queer (LGBTQ) people in rural America. There are few empirically-based mental health interventions for this population. This exploratory study uses a mixed-method approach to assess implementation issues related to the feasibility, acceptability, appropriateness, and preliminary impacts of a novel peer-based intervention designed to enhance support and treatment engagement among rural LGBTQ people with mental distress and/or addiction issues. Quantitative and qualitative results illuminate intervention strengths and area

Health-Care Access and Unmet Needs Among Sexual and Gender Minorities Engaging in Chemsex: A Scoping Review.

OBJECTIVES: Chemsex detrimentally affects psychological, social, and physical well-being, generating substantial health-care demands and revealing systemic service deficiencies. The aim of this scoping review is to explore three key areas in health care for gay, bisexual, and other men who have sex with men (MSM), transgender, and nonbinary populations: unmet clinical needs, patterns of service utilization, and barriers to accessing care. METHODS: Comprehensive literature searches employed PubMed, PsycINFO, Embase, Web of Science, and Scopus. Retrieval scope encompassed reference lists of all

Knowledge of HIV transmission, prevention strategies and U = U among adult sexual and gender minorities in Brazil.

INTRODUCTION: Although strong scientific evidence of the efficacy and effectiveness of treatment-as-prevention (TasP) is available, full endorsement of the "Undetectable = Untransmittable" (U = U) and "zero-risk" messages could be improved. Increasing knowledge about HIV transmission, prevention and treatment is a critical component of care efforts. The study assessed knowledge of HIV transmission and prevention strategies, and the perceived accuracy of the slogan U = U among sexual and gender minorities (SGM) in Brazil. METHODS: Cross-sectional web-based survey targeting adult SGM living in

Correlates of Christian Religious Identification and De-identification among Sexual and Gender Minorities: A U.S. Probability Sample.

Using a U.S. nationally representative sample of 1,529 sexual and gender minorities (SGMs), we examined the demographic and developmental correlates of Christian religious de-identification. We found that SGMs who were older, Black, cisgender men, and/or lived in the American South were more likely to identify as Christian in adulthood, relative to other SGMs. Those who were never Christian reported being more out to family and friends at earlier ages than those who were raised Christian. SGMs who were raised Christian, but did not identify as Christian in adulthood reported, more adverse chil

The moderating role of HIV status in the association between gender identity and depression among sexual and gender minorities in Abuja, Nigeria.

In Nigeria, sexual and gender minorities (SGM) experience disproportionately high rates of depression, exacerbated by layered stigma related to gender identity and HIV status. However, little is known about how HIV status may modify the relationship between gender identity and depression in this context. We conducted a cross-sectional analysis using baseline data from 977 SGM participants recruited through respondent-driven sampling at an SGM-friendly clinic in Abuja, Nigeria (2023-2024). Depression was assessed using the Patient Health Questionnaire-9 (PHQ-9), with scores ≥10 indicating major

Unspoken Challenges: Sexual Health in Sexual and Gender Minority People With Multiple Sclerosis.

Sexual health is an integral part of overall well-being, encompassing emotional, psychological, and physical aspects that profoundly influence quality of life. Despite the prevalence of sexual dysfunction (SD) among people with multiple sclerosis (MS), it is too frequently underreported and undertreated. Sexual and gender minority (SGM) people with MS, in particular, may face stigma, discrimination, and clinician hesitancy that can bar access to necessary sexual health care. Recognizing SGM identity can help clinicians deliver more inclusive general and sexual health care, including but not li

Trends in global research on tobacco use among sexual and gender minorities: A bibliometric analysis, 1984-2024.

INTRODUCTION: Globally, sexual and gender minorities (SGM) exhibit significantly higher tobacco use rates than their cisgender heterosexual counterparts, a persistent health disparity that has garnered increasing attention in public health research. METHODS: We conducted a bibliometric analysis of 704 SGM tobacco use-related publications from the Web of Science Core Collection. First, we examined publication trends, key contributors, and collaborative networks. Second, we performed co-citation network analysis to identify disciplinary characteristics and research hotspots. Finally, we applied

Sociocultural Implications in the Development of Early Maladaptive Schemas in Adolescents Belonging to Sexual and Gender Minorities.

Culture is a central theme across various theories and disciplines, influencing behavior and self-perception through interactions within social groups, families, and legal systems. This influence extends to the general population and particularly impacts sexual and gender minorities (SGMs), resulting in minority stress that contributes to mental health issues and the development of Early Maladaptive Schemas (EMSs). Adolescents within these groups face typical developmental stressors-such as hormonal changes and societal pressures-compounded by prejudice, increasing their vulnerability to depre

Risk Compensation After Initiation of Daily Oral Pre-exposure Prophylaxis Among Sexual and Gender Minorities in Nigeria.

Pre-exposure prophylaxis (PrEP) use may be associated with risk compensation. We enrolled and provided PreP to sexual and gender minorities (SGM) in Abuja, Nigeria between April 2018 and May 2019. Behavioral information and samples for urogenital and anorectal Chlamydia trachomatis and Neisseria gonorrhoeae sexually transmitted infections (STIs) were collected at baseline. Blood samples for PrEP assay and self-reported adherence were collected at three-monthly follow-up visits. STIs were detected using Aptima Combo2 assay. We estimated the odds ratios (ORs) of PCR-diagnosed bacterial STIs and

Rumination longitudinally mediates the association of minority stress and depression in sexual and gender minority individuals.

Minority stress theory describes the excess stressors to which individuals from stigmatized groups are exposed as a result of their marginalized status(es), which can contribute to higher rates of depression among sexual and gender minority (SGM) individuals. The psychological mediation framework expanded on minority stress theory by proposing that rumination may link minority stressors to depression. Although previous studies have shown that rumination mediates associations between minority stressors and psychological distress among SGM individuals, many have done so using cross-sectional dat

HIV educational video content and presentation style preferences among English- and Spanish-speaking US sexual and gender minorities.

Sexual and gender minorities in the USA are disproportionately impacted by HIV, highlighting the need for tailored prevention and treatment interventions. Video-based tools have emerged as promising for disseminating HIV-related information due to their accessibility, scalability and cultural adaptability. However, there is limited research on video content and presentation style preferences, particularly among diverse sexual and gender minorities. This study explored video content and style preferences among English- and Spanish-speaking US sexual and gender minorities to inform the developme

Gender minority stress, sleep disturbance, and sexual victimization in transgender and gender nonconforming adults.

OBJECTIVE: The current study examined facets of gender minority stress (nonaffirmation, internalized transphobia) and protective factors (community connectedness, transgender identity pride) as potential moderators of the relationship between sexual victimization and sleep disturbances among transgender and gender nonconforming (TGNC) adults. METHODS: TGNC adults (n = 191) were recruited through Amazon's Mechanical Turk. The average age was 30.28 years old (SD = 7.09; range 18-71) and the majority (55%) identified in the transfemale spectrum. RESULTS: Results demonstrated a significant two-w

Evidence and knowledge gaps on the disease burden in sexual and gender minorities: a review of systematic reviews.

Sexual and gender minorities (SGM) include individuals with a wide range of sexual orientations, physical characteristics, and gender identities and expressions. Data suggest that people in this group face a significant and poorly understood set of additional health risks and bear a higher burden of some diseases compared to the general population. A large amount of data is available on HIV/AIDS, but far less on other health problems. In this review we aimed to synthesize the knowledge on the burden of communicable and non-communicable diseases, mental health conditions and violence experience

Meeting the Needs of Systems-Involved Sexual and Gender Minority Girls.

Sexual and gender minority (SGM) girls face unique challenges in school, child welfare, and legal settings due to identity-linked discrimination, stigma, and marginalization. Inequities in school harassment, school discipline, and family support are especially harmful, given they increase the risk of homelessness and legal contact. Black and Latinx SGM girls are particularly impacted given the compounding inequities they face in today's society. Despite these tremendous inequities, providers in different settings can make positive impacts for systems-involved SGM girls by creating a safe and a

Functional Neurological Disorder Among Sexual and Gender Minority People.

Sexual and gender minority (SGM) people can face unique stressors and structural discrimination that result in higher rates of neuropsychiatric symptoms, such as depression, anxiety, and suicidality. Although more rigorous studies are needed, emerging data suggest a possible higher prevalence of functional neurological disorder and other brain-mind-body conditions in SGM people. Representation and iterative feedback from affected community members is critical to the process of developing affirming environments. More research is needed to explore the relevance of functional neurologic disorder
