Patient perspectives on hemolytic disease of the fetus and newborn and fetal and neonatal alloimmune thrombocytopenia: common experiences and insights.

INTRODUCTION: Hemolytic disease of the fetus and newborn (HDFN) and fetal and neonatal alloimmune thrombocytopenia (FNAIT) are two rare alloimmune diseases of pregnancies where maternal alloantibodies target fetal blood components, potentially leading to risks of serious health conditions and developmental delays for babies, and sometimes loss of the baby. HDFN and FNAIT often have similarly complex journeys, from diagnosis through to burdensome treatments such as intrauterine transfusions and intravenous immunoglobulin. OUR STORIES: We, the authors, are two mothers with lived experience of t

Endometriosis Communities on Reddit: Quantitative Analysis.

BACKGROUND: Endometriosis is a chronic condition that affects 10% of the people with a uterus. Due to the complex social and psychological impacts caused by this condition, people with endometriosis often turn to online health communities (OHCs) for support. OBJECTIVE: Prior work identifies a lack of large-scale analyses of the experiences of patients with endometriosis and of OHCs. This study aims to fill this gap by investigating aspects of the condition and aggregate user needs that emerge from 2 endometriosis OHCs, r/Endo and r/endometriosis. METHODS: We used latent Dirichlet allocation

Is Peer Support in Group Clinics as Effective as Traditional Individual Appointments? The First Study in Patients With Celiac Disease.

INTRODUCTION: Celiac disease (CD) is common, affecting approximately 1% of the population. The cornerstone of management is a gluten-free diet, with dietetic advice being the key to aiding implementation. The aim of the study was to assess group clinics in comparison with traditional individual appointments. METHODS: Patients with a new diagnosis of CD, confirmed histologically, were prospectively recruited over 18 months in Sheffield, United Kingdom. Patients received either a group clinic or traditional one-to-one appointment, led by a dietitian. Quality-of-life questionnaires were complete

Decision-Making in Refractory Overactive Bladder: Evaluation of a Novel Patient Decision Aid and its Impact on Decisional Conflict.

BACKGROUND: Refractory overactive bladder (OAB) lacks formal definition and is poorly understood. Its management requires patients to choose an invasive treatment, including intravesical botulinum toxin A (BOTOX®), sacral neuromodulation (SNM) and posterior tibial nerve stimulation (PTNS), which have varying rates of efficacy and side effects. These decisions can be complex for patients to make, especially within the time constraints of outpatient clinic appointments. A new patient decision aid (PDA) has been developed to support patients during this shared decision-making process. AIM: This

Feasibility and efficacy of implementing group visits for women's health conditions: a systematic review.

BACKGROUND: Shared medical appointments, also known as group visits, are a feasible and well-accepted approach for women receiving antenatal care, yet the feasibility and efficacy of this approach for female-specific reproductive conditions is uncertain. OBJECTIVE: The aim of this systematic review was to (a) determine the feasibility of group visits in adults with any female-specific reproductive condition, and (b) identify whether delivering group care for these conditions impacts clinical outcomes. METHOD: Six databases and two clinical trials registries were searched from inception throu

"Pedogeriatrics": a pediatric nephrologist's outlook on common challenges facing pediatric and geriatric nephrologists.

Dramatic demographic changes longevity and medical progress helped create a new population made up of the survivors of previously fatal diseases. These trends pose new major social and economic challenges that should be accounted for in health policy making. This paper discusses the similarities between the specialties of pediatrics and geriatrics, especially in the realm of patient care. Children and the elderly share a limited autonomy and dependence on the human environment (i.e., willing and able caregiving persons) due to age or disease. The long-term care of dependent patients (DP) requi

Marfan's syndrome. A personal perspective.

Marfan's patients share the same problems as anyone with a lifelong, progressive, hereditary condition. The more knowledgeable an individual is about his disease and the more willing he is to accept the responsibility for his own well-being, the more control he has over his life. Medical and life insurance is not a luxury, but an absolute must. The need for stable insurance coverage impacts career decisions. Medication is a lifelong necessity; the patient must know what medications he takes, for what purpose, and the side effects. For patients with a cardiac prosthesis, most physicians recomme

Health literacy in perioperative care: toward better shared decision-making through navigation and communication design.

Perioperative care asks patients and their families or caregivers to make decisions and follow important instructions within a short and stressful period. They may need to understand risks and options, follow fasting and medication instructions, move across multiple appointments and care transitions, and manage recovery after discharge while anxious, tired, or in pain. Shared decision-making is increasingly emphasized in perioperative care, but meaningful participation depends on health literacy. In this setting, health literacy includes personal health literacy, navigational health literacy,
