3D Geometric Morphometric Analysis of Calcaneal Morphology in Domestic Caprinae: Sheep (Ovis aries) and Goat (Capra hircus).

The calcaneus plays a critical role in balance, locomotion, and muscle attachment, making it a key structure for biomechanical adaptations. This study examined interspecies differences between sheep and goats, as well as intraspecies variations among different sheep breeds, in calcaneus morphology. A total of 128 right calcanei were analyzed using 3D geometric morphometric methods to allow detailed assessments of calcaneus shape and size. Among sheep, the Hamdani sheep displayed the largest calcaneus among the breeds, distinguishing them significantly from the others. In contrast, goats had a

Domestic sheep show average Coxiella burnetii seropositivity generations after a sheep-associated human Q fever outbreak and lack detectable shedding by placental, vaginal, and fecal routes.

Coxiella burnetii is a globally distributed zoonotic bacterial pathogen that causes abortions in ruminant livestock. In humans, an influenza-like illness results with the potential for hospitalization, chronic infection, abortion, and fatal endocarditis. Ruminant livestock, particularly small ruminants, are hypothesized to be the primary transmission source to humans. A recent Netherlands outbreak from 2007-2010 traced to dairy goats resulted in over 4,100 human cases with estimated costs of more than 300 million euros. Smaller human Q fever outbreaks of small ruminant origin have occurred in

Molecular Survey of Vector-Borne Pathogens in Ticks, Sheep Keds, and Domestic Animals from Ngawa, Southwest China.

Vector-borne pathogens are mainly transmitted by blood-feeding arthropods such as ticks, mosquitoes, fleas, lice, mites, etc. They pose a significant threat to animal and human health due to their worldwide distribution. Although much work has been performed on these pathogens, some neglected areas and undiscovered pathogens are still to be further researched. In this study, ticks (Haemaphysalis qinghaiensis), sheep keds (Melophagus ovinus), and blood samples from yaks and goats were collected in Ngawa Tibetan and Qiang Autonomous Prefecture located on the eastern edge of the Qinghai-Tibet Pla

Molecular evidence of co-infections with Anaplasma and Theileria species in domestic sheep and goats from Alentejo, Portugal.

Anaplasma spp. and piroplasmids are tick-borne pathogens with worldwide distribution, affecting domestic animals, wildlife, and humans. Although several tick-borne species have relevance in animal health and can cause economic losses in livestock farms, little is known about the epidemiological situation in small ruminants in Portugal. We aimed to assess the infection prevalence, molecular characterization, co-infection patterns and risk factors of Anaplasma spp. and piroplasmids in sheep and goat farms from the Alentejo region (south-central Portugal). A total of 290 blood samples collected i

Morphological and molecular characterization of Sarcocystis chenggongensis n. sp. (Apicomplexa: Sarcocystidae) in domestic sheep (Ovis aries) from China.

BACKGROUND: Infections with Sarcocystis spp. in sheep (Ovis aries) are globally prevalent and pose significant health and economic concerns. Nine Sarcocystis taxa, comprising seven identified species and two unclassified entities, are known to form sarcocysts in sheep. Macroscopic sarcocysts with elongated villar protrusions are rare, having been reported only twice: as S. mihoensis in Japan and as an S. mihoensis -like organism in Spain. This study reports the first identification of this morphological type in China. METHODS: Muscle samples were collected from 83 domestic sheep in Kunming Ci

Antibiotic treatment of Mycoplasma ovipneumoniae in domestic sheep (Ovis aries): Working at the livestock-wildlife interface in Yukon, Canada.

Domestic sheep (Ovis aries) can carry the bacterium Mycoplasma ovipneumoniae (M. ovipneumoniae) in their upper respiratory tract, often with little effect on health and productivity. However, for bighorn sheep (Ovis canadensis) populations, there is a link between M. ovipneumoniae infection and pneumonia, poor lamb recruitment, and high fatality rate. Because of these outcomes, preventing transmission of M. ovipneumoniae to free-ranging wild sheep has garnered interest from both the livestock and wildlife sectors. We hypothesized that treatment with intranasal and systemic enrofloxacin would r

In silico investigation of the prion protein glycosylation profiles in relation to scrapie disease resistance in domestic sheep (Ovis aries).

The prion protein is a membrane-bound glycoprotein which consists mainly α-helix structure. In contrast, the infectious prion protein shows the beta-sheet structure. The prion-associated diseases are all lethal neurodegenerative abnormalities, called transmissible spongiform encephalopathies. Scrapie is the most common type of these illnesses affecting sheep, goats, and moufflon. The VRQ, AHQ, ARR and N146S polymorphisms in the sheep prion gene have been found to be associated with resistance to scrapie disease. So far, the relationship of polymorphisms to three-dimensional protein structures,

Resistance to atrial fibrillation domestication and mitochondrial dysfunction in sheep: a potential key role of the TCA cycle and mitochondrial redox state.

BACKGROUND: Atrial fibrillation (AF) often progresses from paroxysmal to more stable forms. It is well-recognized that patients vary in their AF progression, but the underlying mechanisms remain unclear. This work, performed in a sheep AF-model, aimed to identify atrial redox and energetic status differences between animals developing stable AF (AF-S) versus those resistant to AF-stabilization (AF-R). METHODS: AF was induced with bursts of atrial tachystimulation, maintained whenever sinus rhythm resumed, and monitored with telemetry. Electrophysiological and structural remodeling were assess

Bivalent vaccination against pneumonic pasteurellosis in domestic sheep and goats with modified-live in-frame lktA deletion mutants of Mannheimia haemolytica.

A temperature-sensitive shuttle vector, pBB80C, was utilized to generate in-frame deletion mutants of the leukotoxin structural gene (lktA) of Mannheimia haemolytica serotypes 1, 2, 5, 6, 7, 8, 9, and 12. Culture supernatants from the mutants contained a truncated protein with an approximate molecular weight of 66 kDa which was reactive to anti-leukotoxin monoclonal antibody. No protein reactive to anti-LktA monoclonal antibody was detected at the molecular weight 100-105 kDa of native LktA. Sheep and goats vaccinated intramuscularly with a mixture of serotypes 5 and 6 mutants were resistant t

Seroprevalence of Toxoplasma gondii in domestic pigs, sheep, cattle, wild boars, and moose in the Nordic-Baltic region: A systematic review and meta-analysis.

BACKGROUND: Toxoplasma gondii is an important foodborne zoonotic parasite. Meat of infected animals is presumed to constitute a major source of human infection and may be a driver of geographical variation in the prevalence of anti-T. gondii antibodies in humans, which is substantial in the Nordic-Baltic region in northern Europe. However, data on seroprevalence of T. gondii in different animal species used for human consumption are scattered. METHODS: We conducted a systematic review of seroprevalence studies and meta-analysis to estimate the seroprevalence of T. gondii in five animal specie

Domestic Spillover of Mycoplasma ovipneumoniae with Concurrent Bluetongue Virus Implicated in Bighorn Sheep (Ovis canadensis) Epizootic Pneumonia Outbreak in Badlands, South Dakota, USA.

Respiratory disease remains an important threat to bighorn sheep (BHS; Ovis canadensis), complicated by fragmented populations and environmental stressors. Significantly, BHS epizootic pneumonia can lead to all-age die-offs and is population limiting. We describe an interagency investigation of a die-off within a BHS herd in the Badlands region of South Dakota, USA from 2021-22. Minimum survey counts began declining 2 mo following a reported domestic sheep (Ovis aries) and BHS interaction and dropped from 262 to 56 BHS over 9 mo. Postmortem testing included histopathology, bacterial culture, m
