A systematic review on considering the role of Magnesium in preventing post-anesthesia shivering.

Shivering following anesthesia is caused by disturbed regulation of body temperature and causes an increase in tissue oxygen consumption and cardio-pulmonary activity. Choosing the right medicine to reduce shivering with the most negligible side effects in surgery is essential. Magnesium is prescribed intravenously, epidurally, or intra-peritoneally. Each of these methods can have different effects in different surgical operations. In this review, we are looking for randomized clinical trials that compared preoperative magnesium administration with a control group and included studies that eva

Comparative evaluation of oral tramadol and gabapentin for prophylaxis of post-spinal shivering.

BACKGROUND AND AIMS: Shivering in the peri-operative period is a common problem which is associated with various complications. Prophylaxis of shivering can thus help in reducing the cost and risk of complications. The present study was designed to compare prophylactic oral gabapentin, tramadol and placebo for prevention of post-spinal shivering. METHODS: A total of 150 adult patients of either sex belonging to American Society of Anesthesiologists physical status I-III scheduled for elective orthopaedic surgeries were randomised to receive tramadol 100 mg (group A), gabapentin 600 mg (group

Deletion of mitochondrial anchoring protects dysmyelinating shiverer: implications for progressive MS.

The demyelinating disease multiple sclerosis (MS) has an early inflammatory phase followed by an incurable progressive phase with subdued inflammation and poorly understood neurodegenerative mechanism. In this study, we identified various parallelisms between progressive MS and the dysmyelinating mouse model Shiverer and then genetically deleted a major neuron-specific mitochondrial anchoring protein Syntaphilin (SNPH) from the mouse. Prevailing evidence suggests that deletion of SNPH is harmful in demyelination. Surprisingly, SNPH deletion produces striking benefits in the Shiverer by prolong

Hypercapnia lowers the shivering threshold and increases core cooling rate in humans.

BACKGROUND: Hypercapnia, which may be encountered during diving operations or by patients under general anesthesia with spontaneous respiration, alters the basic thermoregulatory responses of animals and humans. In cold-exposed animals, 3-10% inspired CO2 impairs thermal homeostasis by attenuating shivering and promoting heat loss through peripheral vasodilation. Experimental results with humans are equivocal. PURPOSE: To determine the effects of hypercapnia on warm and cold thermoregulatory responses and core cooling rates during mild cold stress, we examined the core temperature (TCO) thres

CCE and EODF as two distinct non-shivering thermogenesis models inducing weight loss.

Increasing energy expenditure and reducing energy intake are considered two classical methods to induce weight loss. Weight loss through physical methods instead of drugs has been a popular research topic nowadays, but how these methods function in adipose and cause weight loss in body remains unclear. In this study, we set up chronic cold exposure (CCE) and every-other-day fasting (EODF) as two distinct models in long-term treatment to induce weight loss, recording their own characteristics in changes of body temperature and metabolism. We investigated the different types of non-shivering the

5-HT3 Receptor Antagonists for the Prevention of Perioperative Shivering: A Meta-Analysis.

The aim of this meta-analysis was to evaluate the preventive efficacy and safety of 5-HT3 receptor antagonists (5-HT3 RAs) on perioperative shivering. Relevant databases were searched to identify eligible randomized, controlled trials through January 2016. Primary outcome was the incidence of perioperative shivering, and secondary outcomes were the incidence of safety-related outcomes including postoperative nausea and vomiting (PONV), bradycardia, and hypotension. We calculated risk ratios (RRs) with 95% confidence intervals (CIs) for dichotomous data. Trial sequential analysis was performed

Nefopam for the prevention of perioperative shivering: a meta-analysis of randomized controlled trials.

BACKGROUND: Shivering is a frequent complication following surgery and anaesthesia. A large variety of studies have been reported that nefopam may be efficacious for the prevention and treatment of perioperative shivering. Regrettably, there is still no conclusion of the efficacy and safety of nefopam for the prevention of perioperative shivering. The aim of this analysis is to evaluate the efficacy of nefopam for the prevention of perioperative shivering in patients undergoing different types of anaesthesia compared with placebo group and other active interventions. METHODS: PubMed, EMBASE,

Shivering thermogenesis in the pigeon: the effects of activity, diurnal factors, and feeding state.

Shivering (electromyographic activity of the pectoral muscle), oxygen consumption, and body temperature were measured from undisturbed pigeons for periods of several weeks, and segments from the midparts of each phase of the light-dark cycle were compared at various ambient temperatures and feeding regimes. Behavior was recorded with a video camera. None of the observed types of behavior (e.g., walking, preening, feeding, drinking, pecking, defecation) induced spurious electrical activity in the pectoral muscle. On the other hand, none of these behaviors directly inhibited ongoing shivering. T

Dantrolene for Control of Refractory Shivering in Severe Traumatic Brain Injury: A Case Study.

BACKGROUND Hyperthermia is strongly associated with a worse neurological outcome in traumatic brain injury (TBI) and can be exacerbated by shivering. However, effective treatments for uncontrolled shivering have yet to be established. We successfully treated a patient with severe TBI and repeated episodes of shivering using dantrolene sodium hydrate (dantrolene). CASE REPORT A 28-year-old healthy male sustained an acute subdural hematoma with a midline shift following a traffic accident. He underwent emergency evacuation of the hematoma and craniectomy and was admitted to the Intensive Care Un

Effects of Perioperative Hypothermia on Extubation, Recovery Time, and Postoperative Shivering in Breast Surgery.

Women undergoing breast surgery seem to be under the risk for hypothermia (central body temperature <36°) due to the uncertainty caused by the preoperative preparation time and the variety of operations, leading to neglect of warming precautions. The study examines the perioperative hypothermia (PH) in breast surgery and the relationships between the depth of decrease in body temperature and individual or clinical variables. This prospective, cross-sectional, observational study includes 120 female patients 18-65 years of age who were given general anesthesia for breast surgery. The incidence

Shivering prevention and treatment during cesarean delivery under neuraxial anesthesia: a systematic review.

INTRODUCTION: Perioperative shivering during cesarean sections (CSs) under neuraxial anesthesia (NA) is clinically common but often under-treated. It may prominently increase oxygen consumption, which can be catastrophic for parturients with ischemic cardiovascular disease. Thus, the prevention and treatment of shivering may be of great significance in parturients. The purpose of this systematic review was to investigate the effectiveness of several drugs on shivering prevention and treatment during CSs under NA. EVIDENCE ACQUISITION: A literature search was carried out using PubMed, EMBASE a

Suppression of shivering decreases oxygen consumption and improves hemodynamic stability during postoperative rewarming.

Thirty-three patients undergoing elective myocardial revascularization were prospectively randomized into two study groups (Group S and Group P) to permit evaluation of the effects of shivering on oxygen consumption per minute (VO2), carbon dioxide production per minute (VCO2), and hemodynamic performance. Group S was allowed to shiver during the postoperative rewarming period, and Group P received hourly injections of pancuronium bromide and Metubine (metocurine) sulfate with sedation to block the shivering response. Group S demonstrated significantly higher increases in VO2 and VCO2, lower s

UCP1: the only protein able to mediate adaptive non-shivering thermogenesis and metabolic inefficiency.

The uniqueness of UCP1 (as compared to UCP2/UCP3) is evident from expression analysis and ablation studies. UCP1 expression is positively correlated with metabolic inefficiency, being increased by cold acclimation (in adults or perinatally) and overfeeding, and reduced in fasting and genetic obesity. Such a simple relationship is not observable for UCP2/UCP3. Studies with UCP1-ablated animals substantiate the unique role of UCP1: the phenomenon of adaptive adrenergic non-shivering thermogenesis in the intact animal is fully dependent on the presence of UCP1, and so is any kind of cold acclimat
