Electrocardiographic changes after radiation therapy for carcinoma of the breast. Incidence and functional significance.

Cardiovascular complications from irradiation for breast carcinoma were assessed by history, physical examination, ECG recording, exercise test and heart volume determination before and two and six months after treatment in 197 unselected patients. A deterioration in general condition during therapy was reported by about 50 per cent of the patients, with shortness of breath and palpitation of the heart as the most frequent complaints and with a gradual improvement after therapy. Clinically, one case of pericarditis was diagnosed. ECG T-wave abnormalities appeared in 35 per cent of the patients

Comparative effectiveness of minimally invasive therapies for plantar fasciitis: a systematic review and network meta-analysis.

Plantar fasciitis is a common and often disabling condition that affects both general and athletic populations, with chronic cases significantly impairing function and quality of life. Although a wide range of conservative and non-invasive, and minimally invasive treatments are available, the absence of direct comparative evidence has limited clarity about which interventions offer the most durable benefits. We conducted a systematic review and network meta-analysis of 63 randomized controlled trials including 4170 participants to evaluate extracorporeal shock wave therapy, prolotherapy, and i

Extracorporeal shock-wave therapy compared with surgery for hypertrophic long-bone nonunions.

BACKGROUND: The authors of several studies have recommended extracorporeal shock-wave therapy as an alternative to surgical treatment for long-bone nonunions. This study was performed to compare the results of extracorporeal shock-wave therapy produced by two different devices with those of surgical treatment in the management of long-bone nonunions. METHODS: One hundred and twenty-six patients with a long-bone nonunion were randomly assigned to receive either extracorporeal shock-wave therapy (Groups 1 and 2) or surgical treatment (Group 3). The patients in the shock-wave groups received fou

Effectiveness of shortwave diathermy in patients with chronic low back pain: A study protocol for a randomised, single-blinded, multicentre clinical trial.

BACKGROUND: Chronic low back pain (CLBP) is a leading cause of disability worldwide and a major public health concern in low- and middle-income countries such as Bangladesh. Although international guidelines classify shortwave diathermy as a low-value treatment, it remains widely used in physiotherapy practice. Evidence on the effectiveness of continuous shortwave diathermy (CSWD) for CLBP is limited and inconsistent. This study aims to determine whether CSWD, when combined with standard physiotherapy, provides additional benefits compared with sham CSWD plus physiotherapy. METHODS: This mult

Short QT syndrome: The current evidences of diagnosis and management.

There are many cardiac arrhythmias and sudden cardiac death (SCD) related to channelopathies or ion channel disorders. Short QT syndrome (SQTS) is an inherited cardiac channelopathy principally caused by defective functioning of both potassium-calcium ion channel that lead to abnormal shortening of QT interval, and an increased risk of ventricular and atrial arrhythmias. Tall T waves in all lead electrocardiogram (ECG), peaked T waves, and narrow-based T waves that are reminiscent of the typical "desert tent" T waves of hyperkalemia are frequently associated with SQTS. Diagnosis is based on pa

Hypothermia ameliorates blast-related lifespan reduction of C. elegans.

Blast-related mild traumatic brain injury induces significant long-term health issues, yet treatment procedures remain underdeveloped. Therapeutic hypothermia has been postulated as a potentially effective therapy. In a Caenorhabditis elegans model, we demonstrate a dose-dependent reduction in lifespan following exposure to blast-like shock waves. Using polyvinyl alcohol, we show that cavitation is a key injurious factor in the damaging shock wave component. Short and long lifespan C. elegans mutants demonstrated the interaction of genetic and environmental longevity-determining factors. Hypot

Noninvasive therapy for the management of patients with advanced coronary artery disease.

OBJECTIVES: To determine the efficacy of cardiac shock wave therapy (CSWT) in the management of patients with end-stage coronary artery disease (CAD). INTRODUCTION: Patients with end-stage CAD have symptoms such as recurrent angina, breathlessness, and other debilitating conditions. End-stage CAD patients are usually those who have angina pectoris following a coronary artery bypass surgery or a percutaneous coronary intervention. These patients are refractory to optimal medical therapy and not fit for a redo procedure, and are often termed as 'no option' patients. METHODS: We carried out a p

Improvements in left ventricular diastolic function after cardiac resynchronization therapy are coupled to response in systolic performance.

OBJECTIVES: To determine the short-term effects of cardiac resynchronization therapy (CRT) on measurements of left ventricular (LV) diastolic function in patients with severe heart failure. BACKGROUND: Cardiac resynchronization therapy improves systolic performance; however, the effects on diastolic function by load-dependent pulsed-wave Doppler transmitral indices has been variable. METHODS: Fifty patients with severe heart failure were evaluated by two-dimensional Doppler echocardiography immediately prior to and 4 +/- 1 month after CRT. Measurements included LV volumes and ejection fracti

Brief review of the recently described short QT syndrome and other cardiac channelopathies.

There are many diseases related to ion-channel disorders, so-called "channelopathies." Hereditary short QT syndrome is a clinical-electrocardiographic entity with autosomal-dominant mode of transmission and it is the most recently described channelopathy. The syndrome may affect infants, children, or young adults with strong positive family background of sudden cardiac death. Short QT syndrome is characterized by short QT and heart-rate-corrected QTc intervals. It is frequently associated with tall-, peaked-, and narrow-based T waves that are reminiscent of the typical "desert tent" T waves of

A fetal Wolff-Parkinson-White syndrome diagnosed prenatally by magnetocardiography.

We report a case of fetal Wolff-Parkinson-White (WPW) syndrome diagnosed prenatally by magnetocardiography (MCG). At 32 weeks' gestation, the fetus was diagnosed to have a paroxysmal supraventricular tachycardia by ultrasonography and direct fetal electrocardiogram (ECG). Transplacental fetal therapy by maternal oral administration of propranolol resolved the fetal tachyarrhythmia. Although the wave forms of the fetal MCG at 32 weeks' gestation were normal, the fetal MCG at 35 weeks' gestation showed a short PR interval and a long QRS complex duration with a delta wave, indicating WPW syndrome

Extracorporeal shock wave lithotripsy of submandibular stones: evaluation after 10 years.

The use of extracorporeal shock waves in the treatment of submandibular stones is a minimally invasive approach for the treatment of this disease. Its clinical significance has been determined in a long-term retrospective study, performed as follow-up to the short-term results. From 1989 to 1994, 197 patients (88 female, 109 male; age range, 8 to 83 years) with symptomatic, sonographically detectable concretions of the submandibular gland were treated with extracorporeal shock wave lithotripsy. The review analysis was completed retrospectively in 2002 and included 191 patients with complete da

Multidimensional characterization of fibrillatory wave amplitude on surface ECG to describe catheter ablation impact on persistent atrial fibrillation.

Radiofrequency catheter ablation (CA) is increasingly employed to treat persistent atrial fibrillation (AF). Nevertheless, its success is not always guaranteed, as selection of patients who could positively respond to this therapy does not rely on systematic criteria and still remains an open issue. Moreover, very little is known about the quantitative effects of this treatment over AF electrophysiology, so their quantitative evaluation is not a trivial task. In this contribution, ablation impact is quantified by a descriptor of fibrillatory wave (f-wave) amplitude, so far regarded as a predic
