BACKGROUND: Stemless anatomic total shoulder arthroplasty (aTSA) with ceramic implants have shown promising midterm clinical outcomes. However, long-term clinical data on ceramic humeral head prostheses are not available. We therefore evaluated the long-term clinical and radiographic outcomes, including implant survival and complication rates, of a stemless ceramic humeral head prosthesis in different shoulder pathologies.
METHODS: In this prospective, multicenter, observational study, patients underwent stemless aTSA using a ceramic humeral head prosthesis. We recorded Constant-Murley Scores

BACKGROUND: In older patients requiring a total shoulder replacement (TSR) and with an intact rotator cuff, there is currently uncertainty on whether an anatomic TSR (aTSR) or a reverse TSR (rTSR) is best for the patient. This comparison study of same-aged patients aims to assess clinical and radiological outcomes of older patients (≥75 years) who received either an aTSR or an rTSR.
METHODS: Consecutive patients with a minimum age of 75 years who received an aTSR (n = 44) or rTSR (n = 51) were prospectively studied. Pre- and post-operative clinical evaluations included the ASES score, Constan

INTRODUCTION: Reverse shoulder arthroplasty (RSA) is a common treatment for proximal humeral fractures (PHFs) in the elderly. This study evaluates the influence of tuberosity healing (TH) on functional outcome following a 135° humeral inclination RSA for PHFs.
METHODS: Retrospectively, all patients with an acute PHF treated with a 135° humeral inclination RSA at four centers during a three-year period were followed up. Constant score (CS), TH and glenoid notching were analyzed.
RESULTS: Sixty-four of 100 patients (64%) with a mean age of 76 ± 7 years were available for follow-up at 22 ± 8 mo

Fractures involving the shoulder-neck junction of the femoral component in total hip arthroplasty are extremely rare with only 25 reported cases identified in existing literature by Van Doesburg et al. Extraction of a well-fixed fractured femoral component, particularly when cemented, is a technically demanding and time-intensive procedure that carries a considerable risk of damage to the host bone. Despite the availability of various described techniques, removal of a broken femoral stem while preserving host bone integrity remains one of the most challenging aspects of revision hip arthropla

BACKGROUND: This study aims to analyze the effects of a novel dual-bearing shoulder prosthesis and a conventional reverse shoulder prosthesis on the deltoid and rotator cuff muscle forces for four different arm motions. The dual-bearing prosthesis is a glenoid-sparing joint replacement with a moving center of rotation. It has been developed to treat rotator cuff arthropathy, providing an increased post-operative functionality.
METHODS: A three-dimensional musculoskeletal OpenSim® model of an upper body, incorporating a natural gleno-humeral joint and a scapula-thoracic joint developed by Blan

An 85-year-old male underwent open reduction and internal fixation (ORIF) for a displaced acromion stress fracture that occurred two years prior. The complete fracture occurred two months after an ipsilateral reverse total shoulder arthroplasty (RTSA). Four weeks after his RTSA, the pain was felt at the posterior-superior shoulder with activities of his daily living as a rancher, reflecting non-compliant use. A stress fracture was suspected but not detected radiographically. Four weeks later, higher pain occurred after he lifted a hay bale, and a displaced basilar acromion fracture was detecte

PURPOSE: Reverse total shoulder arthroplasty (RSA) has revolutionized the management of proximal humerus fractures (PHF) in the elderly patients. There is few or no consensus regarding to management of postoperative rehabilitation in elderly patients. An early rehabilitation from D1 allowed better functional results compared to rehabilitation started to D30 independently from tuberosities consolidation.
METHODS: 94 patients operated on for PHF were evaluated retrospectively, with a minimum radio-clinical follow-up of 2 years. Clinical evaluation included mobilities and four functional scores:

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVE: Reverse shoulder arthroplasty has become a common orthopaedic procedure, with a growing number of cases annually for multiple indications, such as rotator cuff arthropathy, osteoarthritis, or fractures of the proximal humerus, to reduce pain and restore shoulder mobility. Prosthesis design and various recent improvements aim to enhance range of motion (ROM) and stability and to limit component loosening and other potential complications. Many of these well-known issues could theoretically be improved by glenoid, humeral, or combined component lateralization. The objec

Infection associated with an implant is a complication feared in surgery, as it leads to loosening and dysfunction. This report documents an unexpected good bony integration of a porous tantalum shoulder prosthesis despite infection. A shoulder prosthesis with a porous tantalum glenoidal base plate was retrieved after 3 years of ongoing infection with Staphylococcus spp. Methyl-methacrylate embedded sections of the retrieved glenoidal component were analyzed by optical and scanning electron beam microscopy (SEM). Bone ongrowth and ingrowth were quantified. Bone had formed at the implant surfac

BACKGROUND: The design of humeral implants has evolved from the initial Grammont design, notably regarding the neck-shaft angle (NSA) and through the use of cementless prostheses. Stress shielding was frequently reported with cementless implants, the 2 main risk factors being humeral stem misalignment and high filling ratios. Our hypothesis was that standard length cementless stems with an NSA of 140° would facilitate good alignment with moderate filling ratios, thereby limiting stress shielding and ensuring good clinical outcomes.
METHODS: A single-center retrospective study was conducted of

BACKGROUND: Inverted-bearing reverse total shoulder arthroplasty (IB-rTSA) prostheses feature a polyethylene glenosphere and a metallic or ceramic humeral liner. Although midterm clinical results are promising, long-term clinical data with IB-rTSA are limited. Therefore, we evaluated the long-term clinical and radiographic outcomes of IB-rTSA in a variety of shoulder pathologies. Additionally, we reported the type and rate of scapular notching and assessed its effect on clinical results. Finally, we recorded implant survival and complication rates.

PURPOSE: Open reduction and internal fixation with a locking plate are performed frequently to treat fractures of the proximal humerus. Avascular necrosis and non-union or malunion are potential complications of this procedure, which lead to specific fracture sequelae. The aim of this study was to investigate the clinical and radiological results of patients treated by removal of a failed locking plate of the proximal humerus and simultaneous implantation of a reverse total shoulder prosthesis.
METHODS: Twenty-one patients (f = 17, m = 4; mean age 70 years) out of 29 patients were available f
