INTRODUCTION: The colonic mucus layer plays an important role in the protection of the intestinal epithelium and mainly consists of mucin glycoproteins (primarily MUC2 in the colon) trefoil factor 3 (TFF3) and secretory IgA. Butyrate is a major end product of fermentation of dietary fibres and is associated with beneficial effects on colonic health. Earlier in-vitro and animal studies showed that butyrate modulates MUC2 and TFF3 expression and mucin secretion, although data from human studies are not yet available.

PURPOSE: Intestinal metaplasia is considered an intermediary stage of gastric carcinogenesis. Thus, we aim to investigate lesions of intestinal metaplasia diagnosed at patients with peptic ulcer.
MATERIAL AND METHODS: Our study was achieved on a group of 212 patients, clinically diagnosed with gastric ulcer and having partial gastrectomy. The fragments obtained from the circumference, the basis and from around the ulcer were formalin-fixed (10%) and paraffin included. The specimens were stained routinely (HE) and with special methods (van Gieson, Masson, Gomori, PAS and Alcian Blue).

The authors report a case of a primary mucinous carcinoma of the skin. This is a rare adnexial tumor arising from the eccrine secretory coils. The histologic characteristic finding of this lesion is the heap of abundant mucinous material (sialomucin) in the dermis in which rare epithelial islands are free-floating. In this study we also value the importance of a correct diagnosis for an appropriate therapy.

Superficial mucoceles are subepithelial extravasations of sialomucin that occur at the epithelial-connective tissue interface and are directly related to minor salivary glands. They have been described in association with oral lichen planus and, exceptionally, with chronic graft versus host disease. Three patients who underwent an allogeneic bone marrow transplantation for a chronic myelogenous leukaemia presented multiple superficial mucoceles and an oral lichenoid graft versus host disease.

Despite the controversy regarding the significance and usefulness of histochemically differential mucin staining as a marker for colorectal neoplasms, some investigators have used this technique to help define those persons at risk for development of recurrent colorectal carcinoma. There is currently much speculation over the precise nature of lobular carcinoma in-situ of the breast and its significance. Histochemical study shows that it is rich in sialomucin. This has a characteristic intracellular distribution which distinghishes lobular carcinoma in-situ from cancerization of lobules. The same histochemical features are seen in the infiltrative phase of the tumour. These findings invalidate the concept that it is a myoepithelial-cell tumour. Practical applications of the distinctive pattern of mucin secretion are discussed.

We studied a series of 26 cases of carcinoma of the ampulla of Vater. There were 24 adenocarcinomas and two neuroendocrine tumors. Histologically the carcinomas could be divided into tumors arising from periampullary duodenal mucosa and those arising within the ampulla. Fourteen polps with the gross appearance of small hyperplastic (metaplastic) polyps, not exceeding five mm in diameter, were removed from the rectum and the sigmoid colon of patients during colonscopy, and from surgical specimens. Mucin histochemistry was studied in 23 intestinal-type mucinous borderline tumors, 21 endocervical-like mucinous borderline tumors, and 24 mixed-epithelial borderline tumors. The latter two tumors, which are of müllerian type, had a mucin composition similar to that of normal endocervix, with abundant neutral and acidic mucins in approximately equal amounts and a slight predominance of sialomucins over sulfomucins. A membranous basal cell adenoma arose from the minor salivary glands in the hypopharynx of a 62-year-old man. Features distinguishing the membranous variant from other forms of basal cell adenoma include the following: (1) abundant reduplicated basement membrane material, (2) the presence of sialomucin-containing cells, and (3) the lack of distinct encapsulation. To our knowledge, this is the first report of a basal cell adenoma of the hypopharynx, and the first report of the membranous variant in a minor salivary gland.
