Longitudinal Analyses of Presenteeism and Its Role as a Predictor of Sick Leave in Patients With Ankylosing Spondylitis.

OBJECTIVE: To investigate, in a cohort of patients with ankylosing spondylitis (AS) adequately treated with infliximab, changes over time in presenteeism and the role of presenteeism relative to that of the Bath Ankylosing Spondylitis Disease Activity Index (BASDAI) and the Bath Ankylosing Spondylitis Functional Index (BASFI) in predicting sick leave. METHODS: Data were analyzed from 71 patients with paid work and taking a stable dose of infliximab participating in a 96-week study with 5 assessment points. Covariates included presenteeism, sick leave, time, sex, age, BASDAI, BASFI, Bath Ankyl

Does unhappiness make you sick? The role of affect and neuroticism in the experience of common physical symptoms.

The relative strength of both affective state and the personality trait neuroticism in predicting common physical symptoms was tested. The authors used an event-sampling design to overcome methodological limitations of past research in the area. Contrary to much previous research, neuroticism was found to be unrelated to reports of physical symptoms, although it was found to be related to unpleasant affective state. Unpleasant affect bore a strong concurrent relation to the frequency of reported symptoms. Temporal relations between experiences of unpleasant affect and subsequent symptoms were

Sick building syndrome: acute illness among office workers--the role of building ventilation, airborne contaminants and work stress.

Outbreaks of acute illness among office workers have been reported with increasing frequency during the past 10-15 years. In the majority of cases, hazardous levels of airborne contaminants have not been found. Generally, health complaints have involved mucous membrane and respiratory tract irritation and nonspecific symptoms such as headache and fatigue. Except for rare examples of hypersensitivity pneumonitis related to microbiologic antigens, there have been no reports of serious morbidity or permanent sequelae. However, the anxiety, lost work time, decreased productivity and resources spen

[Research Progress in the Role of Hypoxia-Inducible Factor 1 in Altitude Sickness and the Mechanisms Involved].

Individuals who reside at high altitudes for extended periods or those who visit these regions briefly frequently experience high-altitude response, which triggers a series of physiological and pathological changes in the body, ultimately causing altitude sickness. One of the most critical features of high-altitude environments is hypoxia. Recent studies have demonstrated that hypoxia-inducible factor 1 (HIF-1) plays a central role in mediating the body's response to hypoxic conditions at high altitudes. HIF-1, a heterodimeric transcription factor composed of an oxygen-sensitive subunit α (HIF

Role of plasma vasopressin as a mediator of nausea and gastric slow wave dysrhythmias in motion sickness.

The possible role of vasopressin in nausea and gastric dysrhythmias in motion sickness was tested by electrogastrography in 14 subjects during circular vection (60 degrees/s) and vasopressin infusion. Tachygastria was expressed as the signal percent >4.5 cycles/min. Vection evoked nausea scores of 2.6 +/- 0.2 (0 = none to 3 = severe) in 10 subjects with increases in tachygastric activity (15 +/- 2 to 45 +/- 3%) and plasma vasopressin (4.5 +/- 1.5 to 8.4 +/- 2.5 pg/ml) that were blocked by atropine but not indomethacin. Four asymptomatic subjects had no tachygastria or vasopressin release. Vaso

Passive serum sickness in the mouse: the role of vasoactive amines in glomerular deposition of immune complexes.

This paper reports a study of the importance of vasoactive amines in glomerular localization of passively administered immune complexes in the mouse. Two strains of mice were investigated, one sensitive and the other relatively resistant to the anaphylactogenic effect of intravenously administered immune complexes. The effect on glomerular deposition immune complexes in animals of both strains treated with either vasoactive amine depletors or antagonists leads to the conclusion that in this experimental system vasoactive amines do not play a major part in the glomerular localization of immune

Starvation and infection: The role of sickness-associated anorexia in metabolic adaptation during acute infection.

Sickness-associated anorexia, the reduction in appetite seen during infection, is a widely conserved and well-recognized symptom of acute infection, yet there is very little understanding of its functional role in recovery. Anorexic sickness behaviours can be understood as an evolutionary strategy to increase tolerance to pathogen-mediated illness. In this review we explore the evidence for mechanisms and potential metabolic benefits of sickness-associated anorexia. Energy intake can impact on the immune response, control of inflammation and tissue stress, and on pathogen fitness. Fasting medi

In sickness and in health: the role of methyl-CpG binding protein 2 in the central nervous system.

The array of specialized neuronal and glial cell types that characterize the adult central nervous system originates from neuroepithelial proliferating precursor cells. The transition from proliferating neuroepithelial precursor cells to neuronal lineages is accompanied by rapid global changes in gene expression in coordination with epigenetic modifications at the level of the chromatin structure. A number of genetic studies have begun to reveal how epigenetic deregulation results in neurodevelopmental disorders such as mental retardation, autism, Rubinstein-Taybi syndrome and Rett syndrome. Role of cholinergic mechanisms in alterations of rabbit brain functional activity during sea-sickness.

Using the hydrogen-clearance method in chronic experiments on alert rabbits, we investigated the dynamics of changes in local and total cerebral blood-flow, oxygen pressure, bioelectrical activity of the motor, auditory, and visual zones of the cerebral cortex, the heart rate during sea-sickness and the effect of the cholinolytic scopolamine upon changes in these indices. It was found that scopolamine affects the character and direction of changes in both local and overall blood flow in the brain during sea-sickness. Scopolamine does not substantially alter oxygen pressure in the cortical stru

Investigation of the Role of Healthy and Sick Equids in the COVID-19 Pandemic through Serological and Molecular Testing.

More and more studies are reporting on the natural transmission of SARS-CoV-2 between humans with COVID-19 and their companion animals (dogs and cats). While horses are apparently susceptible to SARS-CoV-2 infection based on the homology between the human and the equine ACE-2 receptor, no clinical or subclinical infection has yet been reported in the equine species. To investigate the possible clinical role of SARS-CoV-2 in equids, nasal secretions from 667 horses with acute onset of fever and respiratory signs were tested for the presence of SARS-CoV-2 by qPCR. The samples were collected from

Do parents excuse the misbehavior of children with physical or emotional symptoms? An investigation of the pediatric sick role.

Assessed attributions and responses to descriptions of the misbehavior of children with symptoms of physical and emotional illnesses. Subjects (160 mothers; 160 fathers) read a vignette about a child in one of four illness conditions (medically explained pain with organic etiology; medically unexplained pain, depression, well) who was described as misbehaving at home and school. Within each illness condition, the child protagonist varied by age (8 vs. 16) and gender. A between-subjects design was used in which subjects made judgments regarding causes and responsibility for the child's misbehav

How Does Trauma Make You Sick? The Role of Attachment in Explaining Somatic Symptoms of Survivors of Childhood Trauma.

Exposure to traumatic events during childhood is common, and the consequences for physical and mental health can be severe. Adverse childhood experiences (ACEs) such as physical abuse, sexual abuse, emotional abuse, and neglect appear to contribute to the onset and severity of a variety of somatic inflictions, including obesity, diabetes, cancer, and heart disease. The aim of this scoping review was to try to gain insight into how this might occur. Given the evidence of indirect (i.e., through unhealthy behaviours such as excessive drinking or poor eating habits) and direct (i.e., through its

Role of the low amplitude potential in the initial P wave signal-averaged electrocardiogram [corrected] in sick sinus syndrome.

BACKGROUND: The cause of abnormally low amplitude of the initial P wave signal-averaged electrocardiogram (P-SAECG) in patients with sick sinus syndrome (SSS) is unknown. METHODS AND RESULTS: Thirteen normal patients (Group C) and 33 with SSS (Group S) were examined. The root mean square amplitude for the initial 30 ms (EP30) and the duration of below-4 microV signals of the filtered P waves (ED4) were measured using the P-SAECG. The interval from an atrial potential on the sinus-node electrogram (SNE) to P wave onset (AS-P), and the interval from the P wave to the atrial potential on the His

Short Sickness Absenteeism Rate in a Large Tertiary Hospital: The Role of Fitness for Work and Influenza Vaccination.

Background: Sickness absenteeism has long been an organizational problem due to the consequent loss of productivity (1-2% of gross domestic product in European Union countries) and job overload for workers. We designed and conducted an observational cohort study to describe and analyze the short sickness events and their derived absence days in a large university tertiary hospital, also incorporating the fit for work assessment and the anti-influenza vaccination coverage. Materials and Methods: The anonymous data of workers with at least one day of certified presence during the period 1 Januar

Critical role for scavenger receptor CD36 in microparticle-mediated neuroinflammation in a murine model of decompression sickness.

Blood-borne microparticles (MPs) play a role in several forms of brain injury, but how they interact with the vasculature and contribute to neuroinflammation is unknown. The scavenger receptor CD36 is expressed across various cell types and regulates inflammation, vascular function, and innate immunity. We hypothesized that CD36 mediates MPs-induced neuroinflammatory responses in a murine model of decompression sickness (DCS). Wild-type mice subjected to decompression and naïve mice injected with MPs from decompressed mice exhibited a 2.2 ± 0.5-fold elevation in perivascular MPs deposition, 2.

The role of the parasympathetic nervous system in visually induced motion sickness: systematic review and meta-analysis.

The parasympathetic nervous system (PNS) has been implicated in the development of visually induced motion sickness. The objective of this study was to perform a systematic review and meta-analysis of the effect of visually induced motion sickness on validated parameters of PNS tone. Methods followed PRISMA recommendations. Controlled trials reporting validated measures of PNS tone in visually induced motion sickness in healthy adults were included. One reviewer performed the screening of articles and data extraction, and two reviewers independently performed methodological evaluation. Data we

Possible role of brain stem respiratory neurons in mediating vomiting during space motion sickness.

Vomiting is produced primarily by the coordinated action of the respiratory muscles. The object of this study was to determine if brain stem expiratory neurons control abdominal muscle activity during vomiting. We recorded the activity of 27 ventral respiratory group (VRG) expiratory neurons, which are known to be of primary importance for control of abdominal muscle activity during respiration. During fictive vomiting produced by emetic stimulants in decerebrate, paralyzed cats, only one-third of these neurons had the appropriate firing pattern to contribute to abdominal muscle activity durin
