Event-related potential studies of spoken and written language show the automatic access of auditory and visual words, as indexed by mismatch negativity (MMN) or visual MMN (vMMN). The present study examined whether the same automatic lexical processing occurs in a visual-gestural language, i.e., Hong Kong Sign Language (HKSL). Using a classic visual oddball paradigm, deaf signers and hearing non-signers were presented with a sequence of static images representing HKSL lexical signs and non-signs. When compared with hearing non-signers, deaf signers exhibited an enhanced vMMN elicited by the l

BACKGROUND: The neural basis of action understanding is a hotly debated issue. The mirror neuron account holds that motor simulation in fronto-parietal circuits is critical to action understanding including speech comprehension, while others emphasize the ventral stream in the temporal lobe. Evidence from speech strongly supports the ventral stream account, but on the other hand, evidence from manual gesture comprehension (e.g., in limb apraxia) has led to contradictory findings.
AIMS: Here we present a lesion analysis of sign language comprehension. Sign language is an excellent model for st

This study explored the extent to which parents of deaf children in Al-Kharj use Saudi Sign Language (SSL), the challenges they encounter in learning and using the language, and their suggestions for improving communication with their children. A qualitative approach was employed, using semi-structured interviews with a purposive sample of 14 parents. Data were analyzed thematically. The findings indicate that most parents had no prior exposure to sign language before their child's diagnosis and relied largely on self-initiated learning due to limited institutional support. Participants report

This paper, representing a multilingual Global South-Global North deaf research collaboration, reports and critically analyzes findings from interviews with 5 deaf adult and 5 sign language interpreter participants regarding their educational and training experiences in the postcolonial Caribbean environment of Trinidad and Tobago. Caribbean sign languages are frequently said to be varieties of American Sign Language (ASL) and/or to have been displaced by ASL in schools with deaf learners. In the anglophone Caribbean context, deaf children have not had access to early childhood care and educat

OBJECTIVE: Health literacy is an important predictor of individuals' health, medical adherence, and health-related decision making. This study investigated the predictors of health literacy among Deaf American Sign Language (ASL) users.
METHODS: 408 Deaf ASL users and 445 Hearing English speakers were administered the Newest Vital Sign, a measure of health literacy available in both English and ASL, along with assessments of language proficiency and reading skills.
RESULTS: Deaf participants had 3.7 times greater odds of inadequate health literacy (95 % CI: 2.7, 4.9) compared to their hearin

According to the World Health Organization, hearing disabilities are increasing globally, highlighting the need to support the deaf community. In countries such as Colombia, access to sign language education remains limited. Recent advances in Computer Vision have proven effective in promoting sign language learning through real-time interaction. In response to this need, a time-series dataset was developed to represent signs from Colombian Sign Language (CSL), including 11 colors, 33 courtesy phrases, and the numbers 1-10. This dataset served as input for the development of a technological to

PURPOSE: There are well-established guidelines for the recording, transcription, and analysis of spontaneous oral language samples by researchers, educators, and speech pathologists. In contrast, there is presently no consensus regarding methods for the written documentation of sign language samples. The Handshape Analysis Recording Tool (HART) is an innovative method for documenting and analyzing word level samples of signed languages in real time. Fluent sign language users can document the expressive sign productions of children to gather data on sign use and accuracy.
METHOD: The HART was

Sign language is a form of non-verbal communication used by people with hearing disability. This form of communication relies on the use of signs, gestures, facial expressions, and more. Considering that in Colombia, the population with hearing impairments is around half a million, a database of dynamic, alphanumeric signs and commonly used words was created to establish a basic conversation. For this purpose, 70 non-expert volunteers in Colombian Sign Language participated, and they were recorded against a clear background under uncontrolled lighting and clothing conditions. The dataset was n

Deaf and hard-of-hearing people mainly communicate using sign language, which is a set of signs made using hand gestures combined with facial expressions to make meaningful and complete sentences. The problem that faces deaf and hard-of-hearing people is the lack of automatic tools that translate sign languages into written or spoken text, which has led to a communication gap between them and their communities. Most state-of-the-art vision-based sign language recognition approaches focus on translating non-Arabic sign languages, with few targeting the Arabic Sign Language (ArSL) and even fewer

Improving diversity in residency programs has been increasingly emphasized as a means to address gender, racial, and ethnic disparities in medicine. However, limited attention has been given to the potential benefits of training physicians with differences other than gender or race and ethnicity. Americans with a disability represent about 27% of the U.S. population, whereas 1%-3% of physician trainees report having a disability. In 2013, a national survey identified only 86 physicians or trainees reporting deafness or hearing loss as a disability. To date, there are no published strategies on

This paper presents the design and development of the Hong Kong Sign Language-Sentence Repetition Test (HKSL-SRT). It will be argued that the test offers evidence of discriminability, reliability, as well as practicality and can serve as an effective global measurement of individuals' proficiency in HKSL. The full version of the test consists of 40 signed sentences of increasing length and complexity. Specifically, we will evaluate the manual and non-manual components of these sentences to find out whether and to what extent they can differentiate three groups of deaf signers, namely, native s

INTRODUCTION: Sign language interpreters are at increased risk for musculoskeletal disorders associated with work. Previous studies have used survey techniques to identify potential risk factors and approaches to their medical management. Little is known about risk factors and management of symptoms in this group from the perspective of the interpreter. Such qualitative information should help inform future research related to this professional group.
METHOD: One thousand ninety-two sign language interpreters recruited from the Registry of Interpreters for the Deaf completed an open-ended que

Sign language production of 14 low-functioning students diagnosed with autistic disorder was examined. Videotapes of the students signing with their teachers were analyzed for frequency and accuracy of sign location, handshape, and movement production. The location aspect of signs was produced more accurately by the subjects than either the handshape or movement aspects. Wide individual differences were evident among the students in the number of signs they produced, accuracy of sign formation, and performance on measures of motor functioning. Students' sign vocabulary size and accuracy of sig

TOPIC: Because of the link between communication impairments and psychiatric disorders, it is important for nurses and other healthcare professionals to know the warning signs for the need for a communication/speech/language evaluation for children during infancy through early childhood.
PURPOSE: This article presents an overview of the role of speech-language pathologists (SLPs); the expected developmental achievements for youngsters from infancy to age 5 in speech, language, and communication; and the clinically significant warning signs that indicate a need for speech/language assessment.

Sign languages are one of the main rehabilitation methods for dealing with hearing loss. Like any other language, the geographical location will influence on how signs are made. Particularly in Colombia, the hard of hearing population is lacking from education in the Colombian Sign Language, mainly due of the reduce number of interpreters in the educational sector. To help mitigate this problem, Machine Learning binded to data gloves or Computer Vision technologies have emerged to be the accessory of sign translation systems and educational tools, however, in Colombia the presence of this solu

Communication is harder in larger communities. Past research shows that this leads larger communities to create languages that are easier to learn and use. In particular, previous research suggests that spoken languages that are used by larger communities are more sound symbolic than spoken languages used by smaller communities, presumably, because sound symbolism facilitates language acquisition and use. This study tests whether the same principle extends to sign languages as the role of iconicity in the acquisition and use of sign languages is debated. Furthermore, sign languages are more ic

OBJECTIVE: The present study examined aging and testing-language effects on verbal list learning in young adult and older deaf bilinguals of American Sign Language (ASL) and written English. It is not known which language maximizes free recall, and no list learning task has been widely adopted for testing this population.
METHOD: Thirty-two younger (aged 20-45) and 32 older (aged 64-84) deaf ASL-English bilinguals completed list memory tests in each language. Participants were shown videos of 10 ASL signs and 10 written English words one at a time for immediate recall across three learning tr

Recent evidence suggests that deaf children with CIs exposed to nonnative sign language from hearing parents can attain age-appropriate vocabularies in both sign and spoken language. It remains to be explored whether deaf children with CIs who are exposed to early nonnative sign language, but only up to implantation, also benefit from this input and whether these benefits also extend to memory abilities, which are strongly linked to language development. The present study examined the impact of deaf children's early short-term exposure to nonnative sign input on their spoken language and their

Language comprehension is an essential component of human development that is associated not only with expressive language development and knowledge acquisition, but also with social inclusion, mental health, and quality of life. For deaf and hard-of-hearing adults with intellectual disability, there is a paucity of measures of receptive sign language skills, although these are a prerequisite for individualized planning and evaluation of intervention. Assessments require materials and procedures that are accurate, feasible, and suitable for low levels of functioning. We adapted measures of Eng
