Effects of psychotropic drugs on impairment of acquisition of shuttle avoidance produced by pretreatment with pairs of tone signal and shock in mice.

The acquisition of discrete shuttle avoidance of mouse was significantly impaired by presentation of 120 pairs of a tone signal and an unavoidable/unescapable shock at 30 sec intervals for 3 consecutive days prior to the training session. Caffeine (3 and 10 mg/kg s.c.) reduced such an impairment of the avoidance acquisition, whereas diazepam (0.5-2 mg/kg s.c.), imipramine (30 mg/kg i.p.) and chlorpromazine (2 mg/kg s.c.) enhanced it, when these drugs were administered 10 min before each shock-presenting session. Ethanol (0.8-2.4 g/kg p.o.), nicotine (0.1-1 mg/kg s.c.), methamphetamine (0.1-1 m

Inhibitory Control in Sexually Coercive Men: Behavioral Insights Using a Stop-Signal Task With Neutral, Emotional, and Erotic Stimuli.

Response inhibition is defined as one's ability to voluntarily override an automatic or already initiated action when that action is inappropriate. Although a core mechanism of self-control, its association with sexual coercion perpetration and the impact of erotic cues on its exertion remain unknown. According to a domain-specific perspective on impulsivity, response inhibition performances should be disproportionately hindered by sexual cues in sexual coercion perpetrators. In total, 94 male college students completed a stop-signal task that included neutral, emotional, and erotic distracter

Multiplexed femtomolar detection of Alzheimer's disease biomarkers in biofluids using a reduced graphene oxide field-effect transistor.

Alzheimer's disease (AD) is a neurodegenerative disease that accounts for 70% of all dementia. Early stage diagnosis of AD is essential as there is no certain treatment after the lesion has progressed in the late stage. Nevertheless, there are still limitations of early diagnosis of AD using neuroimaging and psychological memory assessments. Here, we demonstrate ultrasensitive and multiplexed detection of pivotal AD biomarkers (Aβ1-42 and t-Tau) in biofluids using a reduced graphene oxide field-effect transistor (gFET). The proposed approach provides a wide logarithmically linear range of dete

Are there differential deficits in facial emotion recognition between paranoid and non-paranoid schizophrenia? A signal detection analysis.

This study assessed facial emotion recognition abilities in subjects with paranoid and non-paranoid schizophrenia (NPS) using signal detection theory. We explore the differential deficits in facial emotion recognition in 44 paranoid patients with schizophrenia (PS) and 30 non-paranoid patients with schizophrenia (NPS), compared to 80 healthy controls. We used morphed faces with different intensities of emotion and computed the sensitivity index (d') of each emotion. The results showed that performance differed between the schizophrenia and healthy controls groups in the recognition of both neg

The placebo response in functional bowel disorders: perspectives and putative mechanisms.

The nature and determinants of the placebo response are widely unknown, as are the underlying psychological and biological mechanisms. High placebo response rates in functional bowel disorders (functional dyspepsia, irritable bowel syndrome) are similar to those in non-intestinal diseases (depression, pain, Parkinson's disease) and not too dissimilar to other organic gastrointestinal diseases (duodenal ulcer, inflammatory bowel diseases). Methodological reasons (regression to the mean, shift in signal detection through manipulation of expectations) and psycho-biological mechanisms (Pavlovian c

Utility of the Full ECG Waveform for Stress Classification.

The detection of psychological stress using the electrocardiogram (ECG) signal is most commonly based on the detection of the R peak-the most prominent part of the ECG waveform-and the heart rate variability (HRV) measurements derived from it. For stress detection algorithms focused on short-duration time windows, there is potential benefit in including HRV features derived from the detection of smaller peaks within the ECG waveform: the P, Q, S, and T waves. However, the potential drawback of using these small peaks is their smaller magnitude and subsequent susceptibility to noise, making the

Who Falls for Misinformation and Why?

Misinformation is widespread, but only some people accept the false information they encounter. This raises two questions: Who falls for misinformation, and why do they fall for misinformation? To address these questions, two studies investigated associations between 15 individual-difference dimensions and judgments of misinformation as true. Using Signal Detection Theory, the studies further investigated whether the obtained associations are driven by individual differences in truth sensitivity, acceptance threshold, or myside bias. For both political misinformation (Study 1) and misinformati

Detection of symmetry and anti-symmetry.

To assess the role of second-order channels in symmetry perception we measured the effects of check size, spatial frequency content, eccentricity and grey scale range on the detection of symmetrical and anti-symmetrical patterns. Thresholds for symmetrical stimuli were only moderately affected by these manipulations. Anti-symmetrical stimuli composed of large black and white checks elicited low thresholds. However, anti-symmetry became essentially undetectable at small check sizes. Removing low frequencies from large-check-size, anti-symmetrical stimuli had little effect on thresholds whereas

Age-related susceptibility to the Müller-Lyer and the horizontal-vertical illusions.

Participants between the ages of 3 and 20 years adjusted the Müller-Lyer illusion and the inverted-T form of the Horizontal-Vertical illusion. Perceptual error was quantified using signal detection and nonparametric measures of sensitivity and responsivity. Significant changes in sensitivity and responsivity were found for each illusion across participants' ages. No effect of sex of participant was found. Sensitivity and responsivity were largely asymptotic between the ages of 13 to 15 years for the Müller-Lyer illusion and between the ages of 11 to 15 years for the Horizontal-Vertical illusio

Reduced multisensory integration in patients with schizophrenia on a target detection task.

A growing body of literature demonstrates impaired multisensory integration (MSI) in patients with schizophrenia compared to non-psychiatric individuals. One of the most basic measures of MSI is intersensory facilitation of reaction times (RTs), in which bimodal targets, with cues from two sensory modalities, are detected faster than unimodal targets. This RT speeding is generally attributed to super-additive processing of multisensory targets. In order to test whether patients with schizophrenia are impaired on this basic measure of MSI, we assessed the degree of intersensory facilitation for

Adaptive signal theory: an integrative evolutionary, ecological, and intergenerational framework for psychological distress.

Despite substantial increases in pharmacological and psychotherapeutic treatment availability, global rates of psychological distress continue to rise, a pattern existing frameworks, taken individually, cannot fully explain. Current dominant models frequently conceptualize distress primarily as neurochemical dysfunction, emphasizing symptom reduction while leaving broader neurobiological signaling processes insufficiently addressed. For a clinically significant subset of individuals, this contributes to recurring symptom patterns, escalating treatment requirements, and eventual treatment resis

Effects of loss aversion on post-decision wagering: implications for measures of awareness.

Wagering contingent on a previous decision, or post-decision wagering, has recently been proposed to measure conscious awareness. Whilst intuitively appealing, it remains unclear whether economic context interacts with subjective confidence and how such interactions might impact on the measurement of awareness. Here we propose a signal detection model which predicts that advantageous wagers placed on the identity of preceding stimuli are affected by loss aversion, despite stimulus visibility remaining constant. This pattern of predicted results was evident in a psychophysical task where we ind

The effects of increasing resource demand on vigilance performance in adults with schizophrenia or developmental attentional/learning disorders: a preliminary study.

The goal of this study was to assess whether degree of information processing load differentially affects vigilance performance in patients with schizophrenia as compared to normal controls or patients with other attentional disorders. We contrasted the performance of clinically stable outpatients with schizophrenia (n = 18), with that of normal controls (n = 17), and adults with developmental attentional/learning disorders (n = 13) on simple and demanding versions of a visual continuous performance test (CPT). Patients with schizophrenia were significantly impaired on both versions of the CPT

Signal identification of adverse reactions related to phentermine/topiramate: A study based on FAERS reports.

OBJECTIVES: The phentermine/topiramate combination represents one of the most effective anti-obesity therapies under investigation; however, its safety profile requires further exploration. This study aimed to systematically analyze adverse events (AEs) associated with phentermine/topiramate using the FDA Adverse Event Reporting System (FAERS) database, identify potential safety signals, and provide evidence to inform safer clinical decision-making. METHODS: Reports related to phentermine/topiramate were extracted from the FAERS database covering the period between the third quarter of 2012 a

Line drawings as a tool to probe edge sensitivity in natural scenes.

To interact with the world effectively, the human visual system must extract meaningful features from visual scenes. One key feature are edges, luminance or texture discontinuities in two-dimensional (2D) images that often correspond to object boundaries in three-dimensional scenes. Edge sensitivity has traditionally been studied with well-controlled stimuli and binary choice tasks, but it is unclear how well these insights transfer to real-world behavior. Recent studies have extended this approach using natural images but typically retained binary button presses. In this study, we extend the

Auditory false perception in schizophrenia: Development and validation of auditory signal detection task.

Auditory hallucinations constitute an important symptom component in 70-80% of schizophrenia patients. These hallucinations are proposed to occur due to an imbalance between perceptual expectation and external input, resulting in attachment of meaning to abstract noises; signal detection theory has been proposed to explain these phenomena. In this study, we describe the development of an auditory signal detection task using a carefully chosen set of English words that could be tested successfully in schizophrenia patients coming from varying linguistic, cultural and social backgrounds. Family History of Alzheimer's Disease is Associated with Impaired Perceptual Discrimination of Novel Objects.

Early detection may be the key to developing therapies that will combat Alzheimer's disease (AD). It has been consistently demonstrated that one of the main pathologies of AD, tau, is present in the brain decades before a clinical diagnosis. Tau pathology follows a stereotypical route through the medial temporal lobe beginning in the entorhinal and perirhinal cortices. If early pathology leads to very subtle changes in behavior, it may be possible to detect these changes in subjects years before a clinical diagnosis can currently be made. We aimed to discover if cognitively normal middle-aged
