Estimating perceived phonatory pressedness in singing from flow glottograms.

The normalized amplitude quotient (NAQ), defined as the ratio between the peak-to-peak amplitude of the flow pulse and the negative peak amplitude of the differentiated flow glottogram and normalized with respect to period time, has been shown to be related to glottal adduction. Glottal adduction, in turn, affects mode of phonation and hence perceived phonatory pressedness. The relationship between NAQ and perceived phonatory pressedness was analyzed in a material collected from a professional female singer and singing teacher who sang a triad pattern in breathy, flow, neutral, and pressed pho

Respiratory patterns and oxygen consumption in singing zebra finches.

Song production in birds is driven by temporally complex respiratory patterns. In zebra finches (Taeniopygia guttata), song consists of repetitions of a stereotyped sequence of distinct syllables (motif). Syllables correspond to distinct expiratory pulses, which alternate with short deep inspirations. We investigated the effect of the song motor pattern on respiration using a newly developed mask system to measure oxygen consumption while simultaneously monitoring subsyringeal air sac pressure. The metabolic cost of song is closely related to song duration (mean=85.7 microl O(2) g(-1) x min(-1

The singing/acting child: a speech-language pathologist's perspective.

Performance-oriented children who encounter voice problems benefit from a team approach to intervention. Developmental and psychosocial issues in addition to the acquisition of information and vocal skills must be addressed. This article presents information from a speech-language pathologist's perspective and includes some examples of clinical approaches and strategies. The importance of building motivation to change vocal habits and the need for the child to develop insight and self-evaluation strategies is emphasized.

Singing and Speaking Ability in Parkinson's Disease and Spinocerebellar Ataxia.

PURPOSE: This study examined spontaneous, spoken-to-a-model, and two sung modes in speakers with Parkinson's disease (PD), speakers with cerebellar disease (CD), and healthy controls. Vocal performance was measured by intelligibility scores and listeners' perceptual ratings. METHOD: Participants included speakers with hypokinetic dysarthria secondary to PD, those with ataxic dysarthria secondary to CD, and healthy speakers. Participants produced utterances in four vocal modes: spontaneous speech, spoken-to-a-model, sung-to-a-model, and spontaneous singing. For spoken-to-a-model and sung-to-a-

A Nasoendoscopic Study of "Head Resonance" and "Imposto" in Classical Singing.

BACKGROUND: Classical singing pedagogy uses many concepts which lack precise definition and whose acoustic and physiologic correlates are unclear. This study focuses on the concepts "head resonance" and "imposto." In singing guidebooks, head resonance has been described as causing vibratory sensations on the face and head, auditively it has been described as a bright color especially predominating in the higher pitch range. "Imposto" has been related to the sensation of "air flow" or "sympathetic resonance vibrations" on or over the upper bridge of nose, and it also has been pursued using a "c

3D analysis of the movements of the laryngeal cartilages during singing.

OBJECTIVE: The vocal range of untrained singers rarely exceeds one and a half octaves, but professional singers have a range of at least two and a half octaves. The aim of this study was to better understand the muscle and cartilage movements responsible for the control of vocal pitch in singing. STUDY DESIGN: Prospective study. METHODS: We recruited 49 female professional singers (25 sopranos and 24 altos) and analyzed laryngeal three-dimensional images derived from high-resolution computed tomography scans obtained at the mean speaking fundamental frequency (F0) and at one (F1) and two oct

Aerobic Exercise as a Warm-Up for Singing: Aerodynamic Changes.

OBJECTIVES: This study was designed to determine the impact of aerobic exercise on vocal warm-up. STUDY DESIGN: This is a cohort experimental study. METHODS: Sixteen graduate and six undergraduate students in an academic vocal performance program participated. They completed a 30-minute treadmill workout in their target aerobic heart range. Aerodynamic data during singing were acquired before and after the treadmill workout. In full voice, participants sang the first seven notes of the Star Spangled Banner on "pah," repeating the seventh note seven times, at 1.5 syllables/s after an inhalati

Soft phonation in the male singing voice: a preliminary study.

Sustained high notes, diminishing gradually from the loudest to the softest phonation within a maneuver called messa di voce, are examined in two contrasting professional tenor voices. Signals of the sound pressure level, electroglottograph, and mean esophageal pressure are recorded, and similar maneuvers by the same subjects are examined stroboscopically. The lyric voice is found to make a gradual diminuendo while maintaining nearly constant posture of the vocal tract together with a phase of complete closure in the glottal cycle. The robust voice, by contrast, passes abruptly from a producti

Singing with and without words: hemispheric asymmetries in motor control.

Singing is relatively preserved and can even improve the language production of aphasic patients who have lesions of the left hemisphere but an intact right hemisphere. In contrast, singing is impaired following lesions or anesthesia of the right hemisphere, suggesting a right hemisphere role in singing. To assess the influence of singing upon hemispheric control of articulatory output in normal subjects, we measured lip opening asymmetry by single-frame photographic analysis. Spontaneous speech, reciting the words of a song, and singing with words all showed right-side lip opening superiority

Singing can improve speech function in aphasics associated with intact right basal ganglia and preserve right temporal glucose metabolism: Implications for singing therapy indication.

Clinically, we know that some aphasic patients can sing well despite their speech disturbances. Herein, we report 10 patients with non-fluent aphasia, of which half of the patients improved their speech function after singing training. We studied ten patients with non-fluent aphasia complaining of difficulty finding words. All had lesions in the left basal ganglia or temporal lobe. They selected the melodies they knew well, but which they could not sing. We made a new lyric with a familiar melody using words they could not name. The singing training using these new lyrics was performed for 30

Fathers' experiences singing to their infants: an interpretative phenomenological analysis.

BACKGROUND: Infant-directed singing (ID singing) is a powerful phenomenon with well-established clinical applications for infants and parents. Existing research, however, focuses primarily on mothers, leaving a critical gap in the literature. METHODS: This study explores fathers' experiences singing with their infants, specifically examining how fathers engage in and perceive singing to their infant; the factors that influence fathers' singing; and how, if at all, singing influences father-infant bonding. Semi-structured interviews with thirteen fathers were analyzed using Interpretative Phen

Endogenous oxytocin, cortisol, and testosterone in response to group singing.

Humans have sung together for thousands of years. Today, regular participation in group singing is associated with benefits across psychological and biological dimensions of human health. Here we examine the hypothesis that a portion of these benefits stem from changes in endocrine activity associated with affiliation and social bonding. Working with a young adult choir (n = 71), we measured changes salivary concentrations of oxytocin, cortisol, and testosterone from before and after four experimental conditions crossing two factors: vocal production mode (singing vs. speaking) and social cont

Singing and Dancing With Neuromuscular Conditions: A Mixed-Methods Study.

The purpose of this study was to assess the safety and meaningfulness of a 15-week recreational dance and singing program for people with neuromuscular conditions. Within a transformative mixed-methods design, pulmonary function tests, plethysmography through wearable technology (Hexoskin vests), individualized neuromuscular quality-of-life assessments (version 2.0), and semistructured interviews were used. The interviews were analyzed through inductive, semantic thematic analysis. Although the sample sizes were small (six people with neuromuscular conditions), the authors found no evidence of

Prevalence of Hearing Loss in Teachers of Singing and Voice Students.

OBJECTIVES: Singers and voice teachers are exposed to a range of noise levels during a normal working day. This study aimed to assess the hearing thresholds in a large sample of generally healthy professional voice teachers and voice students to determine the prevalence of hearing loss in this population. STUDY DESIGN: A cross-sectional study was carried out. METHODS: Voice teachers and vocal students had the option to volunteer for a hearing screening of six standard frequencies in a quiet room with the Shoebox audiometer (Clearwater Clinical Limited) and to fill out a brief survey. Data we

The demands of professional opera singing on cranio-cervical posture.

Difficulty with singing is a rare but important complication following cervical spine surgery but there is little objective information regarding the cervical and head postural changes taking place during singing. The aim of this study was to identify postural changes in the cranio-cervical region associated with the demands of voice production in professional opera singing. The two Roentgen-cephalograms, one of which are taken whilst performing a specified singing task were taken from 18 professional opera students, 12 females (mean age 20.86 +/- 3.07 years) and six males (18.66 +/- 1.36 year

Making non-fluent aphasics speak: sing along!

A classic observation in neurology is that aphasics can sing words they cannot pronounce otherwise. To further assess this claim, we investigated the production of sung and spoken utterances in eight brain-damaged patients suffering from a variety of speech disorders as a consequence of a left-hemisphere lesion. In Experiment 1, the patients were tested in the repetition and recall of words and notes of familiar material. Lyrics of familiar songs, as well as words of proverbs and prayers, were not better pronounced in singing than in speaking. Notes were better produced than words. In Experime

Articulatory and Phonatory Precision When Singing Staccato at Different Speeds.

INTRODUCTION: Vocal tract adjustments are important for resonatory modification of the voice and also with respect to interactions concerning the voice source production. It is not clear, however, how fast, separated notes (staccato) influence vocal tract adjustments. MATERIAL AND METHODS: Twelve professional singers (four sopranos, three mezzo-sopranos, three tenors, and two baritones/basses) were recorded with dynamic real-time 2D-magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) with 25 fps singing a scale in legato and different staccato speeds (60, 120, 180, and 240 bps). From the MRI material, the lip o
