Peculiar bony involvement of sinus pericranii in children: Extensive diploic erosion in three "karstic" variants.

OBJECT: Sinus pericranii (SP) is a rare, benign, extradural venous anomaly whose extracranial connection consists in an enlarged subgaleal drainage composed of a network of thin-walled veins that form a varix on the external table of the skull. In the present series of three patients we present three variantesof SP which have never been described, characterized by an extensive diploic erosion causing a "karstic" effect. METHODS: A systematic review was conducted in compliance with the Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analyses (PRISMA) guideline. A comprehensive search

Sinus pericranii with unusual features: multiplicity, associated dural venous lakes and venous anomaly, and a lateral location.

Anomalous connections between an extracranial venous sac and intracranial dural sinuses through dilated diploic and emissary veins of the skull result in sinus pericranii (SP). In this study, two patients with the rare presentation of multiple, congenital SP with associated dural venous lakes and venous anomalies are described. In one patient, multiple SPs were located in the frontal, parasagittal region with an associated subcortical venous angioma; and, in the other, peritorcular and juxta-transverse-sigmoid sinus junction SP coexisted. The venous anomalies drained into venous lakes in close

Infantile midline facial hemangioma with agenesis of the corpus callosum and sinus pericranii: another face of the PHACE syndrome.

BACKGROUND: In the majority of cases, infantile hemangiomas are not associated with any other abnormalities. Occasionally, they may indicate the presence of systemic malformations. PHACE syndrome includes the coexistence of hemangioma, posterior fossa brain abnormalities, arterial anomalies, coarctation of the aorta, cardiac defects, and eye abnormalities. We report a case of a 2-month-old female with PHACE syndrome who also had sinus pericranii. CLINICAL CASE: A 2-month-old girl was seen for a plaque-like, segmental, midfacial hemangioma, with recurrent hemorrhages, noted at birth. As part o

Sinus pericranii: an overview and literature review of a rare cranial venous anomaly (a review of the existing literature with case examples).

Sinus pericranii is a rare vascular abnormality characterised by abnormal connections between the intra- and extracranial venous systems and is usually found in children. In most instances, a sinus pericranii presents as a soft scalp swelling that appears with the patient in the recumbent position and disappears in the erect position. We review two cases of sinus pericranii presented in adulthood and treated surgically with good outcomes. We have performed a search of the English literature using the PubMed database and reviewed the published cases to date to present an overview of this pathol

Staged Raising of a Coronal Flap for Fronto-Orbital Advancement and Remodeling in Saethre-Chotzen Syndrome Complicated by Sinus Pericranii.

This article reports the surgical management of a 3-month-old girl with Saethre-Chotzen syndrome, who presented with bicoronal synostosis and a large midline sinus pericranii with abnormal cerebral venous drainage via scalp veins. Raised intracranial pressure was demonstrated on monitoring, indicating the need for calvarial expansion necessitating a coronal access incision. A 2-staged delayed raising of the coronal flap was performed to reduce the potential risk of cerebral venous infarction. Monitoring for clinical sequelae and a computerised tomography venogram followed each of these procedu

A Vascular Quartet: Scalp Arteriovenous Malformation, Sinus Pericranii, Dural Arteriovenous Fistula, and Arteriovenous Brain Malformation in a Single Patient.

We present a case of a 51-year-old female who presented for evaluation of a large scalp mass found to have a different quartet of vascular malformations- a persistent scalp arteriovenous malformation (sAVM) with sinus pericranii, an inoperable intracranial SM-V brain arteriovenous malformation (bAVM), and a Cognard I dural arteriovenous fistula (dAVF). This is the first reported instance with four distinct vascular pathologies. We review the etiologies of multiple vascular abnormalities in the cerebral circulation that could contribute to this patient's findings and review strategies for treat

A review of extraaxial developmental venous anomalies of the brain involving dural venous flow or sinuses: persistent embryonic sinuses, sinus pericranii, venous varices or aneurysmal malformations, and enlarged emissary veins.

This paper is a narrative review of extraaxial developmental venous anomalies (eDVAs) of the brain involving dural venous flow or sinuses: persistent embryonic sinuses, sinus pericranii, enlarged emissary veins, and venous varices or aneurysmal malformations. The article highlights the natural history, anatomy, embryology, imaging, clinical implications, and neurosurgical significance of these lesions, which the authors believe represent a continuum, with different entities characterized by distinct embryopathologic features. The indications and surgical management options are discussed for th

[Pericranial sinus].

This study concerns four cases of sinus pericranii observed at the Neurological Department of Nancy. Sinus pericranii is a direct communication between the outer surface of the skull and the intracranial venous sinuses. It may be congenital, acquired or traumatic. This abnormality, usually located in the midline and often in the frontal region, is usually symptomless, but some patients complain of headache, nausea and vertigo. Sinus pericranii shows as a fluctuating non pulsatile mass of reddish or bluish colour, expanding when the patient bends his head down. Radiography usually shows one or

[Occipital tumor simulating pericranial sinus (author's transl)].

A case of occipital tumor simulating sinus pericranii was reported. The patient was a 4-year-old girl who suffered from headache and nausea following head injury on midoccipital tumor, but had no remarkable neurological deficit. Her occipital tumor was soft, compressible redish and cyst-like without bruit. Conray cystography of this tumor showed superior sagittal sinus like shadow (Fig. 4). Total removal of the tumor associated with epidural hematoma was performed. Histologically this tumor was confirmed as eosinophilic granuloma. Pathogenesis of this case is following, since patient's tumor w

Frontal Mass That Varies in Size With Body Position: A Surgical Treatment of a Rare Case of Sinus Pericrania.

Sinus pericranii (SP) is a vascular malformation characterized by abnormal communication between extracranial scalp venous channels and intracranial sinuses. Owing to its rarity, it is prone to misdiagnosis and mistreatment. A typical characteristic of SP is that the size of the mass is related to its position. To date, there are no uniform criteria for SP treatment options and prognosis. This article reports an innovative surgical method for the complete cure of an adult frontal SP. The authors systematically displayed the extracranial, cranial, and intracranial parts of the SP, and the autho

Calvarial tuberculosis in a paediatric patient: a diagnosis not to forget.

We report the case of a 10-year-old boy that presented with a palpable, painless, frontal lesion. Laboratory assessments were unremarkable and the patient was asymptomatic. Initial investigation, with a skull radiograph and unenhanced CT scan, showed a lytic midline frontal lesion involving the inner and outer tables of the skull and a large subgaleal hypodense component. MRI further depicted communication with the epidural space and contact with the superior sagittal sinus (SSS). Subsequent evaluation by Doppler ultrasound and MR angiography excluded a sinus pericranii and showed normal paten

Pediatric and inherited neurovascular diseases.

Pediatric and inherited neurovascular syndromes have diverse presentations and treatments. Although many of these diseases are uncommon, they must be included in the differential diagnosis for children with strokes or hemorrhages. In neurosurgical practice, familial cavernous malformations, hereditary hemorrhagic telangiectasia (HHT), and moyamoya are the most frequently encountered of these diseases. In this article, we will discuss familial cavernomas and HHT, as well as more unusual entities such as PHACE(S) syndrome, Klippel-Trenaunay syndrome, Wyburn-Mason syndrome, sinus pericranii, radi

[Giant pericranial sinus with extensive occipital calvarium defect].

BACKGROUND: Giant non-traumatic and non-iatrogenic cranial vault defects are poorly studied due to their rarity. Therefore, diagnosis and analysis of their causes are difficult. In available literature, we found only 4 cases of giant pericranial sinus accompanied by extensive cranial vault defects. OBJECTIVE: To present a rare and difficult diagnostic case of cranial vault lesion with non-traumatic and non-iatrogenic extensive bone defect, as well as to propose treatment of this pathology. UNLABELLED: The patient presented with complaints of a «growing» parietal-occipital cranial vault defec

LYMPHODYSPLASIA AND KRAS MUTATION: A CASE REPORT AND LITERATURE REVIEW.

Cardio-facio-cutaneous (CFC) syndrome is a very rare and sporadic disease whose characteristics include dysmorphic facial appearance, ectodermal abnormalities, cardiac abnormalities, growth retardation and neurodevelopmental delay. This syndrome is classified as one of the RAS syndromes which are caused by altered signal transduction of the RAS/MAPK (mitogen activated protein kinase) pathway due to the mutation of genes including BRAF, MEK1/2, HRAS and KRAS. Other RAS syndromes, such as Costello syndrome and Noonan syndrome, share clinical features with CFC. Moreover, patients with the same cl

[A case report of a scalp dermoid cyst containing watery-clear fluid].

We report a case of a 7-month-old female with a dermoid cyst on the anterior fontanelle. She was born with a vacuum extractor. Two weeks later, her scalp on the anterior fontanelle bulged. A doctor was consulted when she was 3 months old, because the tumor was enlarging. Magnetic resonance image (MRI) showed a cystic mass on the anterior fontanelle. She was brought to our institute. At the first medical examination, she was alert and had no neurological deficit. The tumor was suspected to be a sinus pericranii or a pseudo meningocele. She was observed as an out patient, but the tumoral size be

Parietal Meningocele Under the Scalp of a Fetus Diagnosed Based on Volume Contrast Imaging of Prenatal Three-Dimensional Ultrasound Data.

Determining the differential diagnosis of small scalp cysts identified on a fetus is difficult. In particular, many physicians have difficulty differentiating small meningoceles from small scalp cysts during the prenatal period. Volume contrast imaging increases contrast between tissues, thereby allowing an enhanced view of target structures. A 15 × 5 mm scalp cyst was identified on a fetus during a prenatal ultrasonography examination performed at 20 weeks of gestation. The cyst was not connected to the blood flow, and did not include the tissue of the brain parenchyma. Ventriculomegaly and o
