Changes in biomechanics of skiing at maximal velocity caused by simulated 20-km skiing race using V2 skating technique.

This study investigated how the fatigue caused by a 20-km simulated skating cross-country skiing race on snow affects the final spurt performance from a biomechanical perspective. Subjects performed a 100-m maximal skiing trial before and at the end of the simulated race. Cycle characteristics, ground reaction forces from skis and poles, and muscle activity from eight muscles were recorded during each trial. Results showed that subjects were in a fatigued state after the simulated race manifested by 11.6% lower skiing speed (P<.01). The lower skiing speed was related to an 8.0% decrease in cyc

Wristwatch-associated ski injury.

Upper limb injuries are a common occurrence in snowboarders, and these may be reduced by wearing wrist guards that transmit the force of the fall across the forearm. We present a case of a 26-year-old man who experienced a displaced left radial and ulnar fracture related to wearing a wristwatch while snowboarding. The wristwatch acted as a fulcrum around which the arm was fractured, serving as a stress riser that focused the force of the fall. The fracture was treated using open reduction and internal fixation.

The New Ski-Skating Poles.

In brief During competition, a cross-country skier sustained a fifth metacarpal fracture, which is an unusual injury in this population. The skier's shelf-support pole grip, along with twisting of the flexed fifth finger, might have contributed to the mechanism of injury. As ski-skaters look to new pole grips to increase their power and thrust, physicians may see more of these injuries. Urging patients who use these models to properly adjust their grip straps may help prevent these injuries.

Telemark skiing injuries: an 11-year study.

This study evaluated telemark injuries in a Swedish ski area in terms of injury ratio, location, and causes over time. During the seasons of 1989-2000 all injured telemark skiers ( n=94) who attended the medical center in Tärnaby, Sweden, within 48 h after the accident were registered and asked to fill in an injury form. A control group of noninjured telemark skiers were interviewed in the season of 1999-2000. The most common cause of injury was fall (70%) and the injury ratio was 1.2. There was a higher proportion of beginners in the injured population, and they had a fall/run ratio of 0.7, c

Telemark skiing injuries: characteristics and risk factors.

OBJECTIVE: To determine the types of injuries associated with telemark skiing and the effects of ability level, equipment, and terrain. METHODS: A survey was mailed to a sample of North American telemark skiers. RESULTS: Completed surveys were returned by 548 telemarkers (response rate = 74.5%). The mean age was 42.7 (+/- 9.3) years, and 69% were male. A total of 439 injury events resulted in 494 body injuries, reported by 285 skiers (52%). Lower-extremity injuries (n = 231) were more frequent than upper-extremity injuries (n = 187). Knee injuries were most common with 128 cases, followed by

Skiing injuries in children, adolescents, and adults.

We prospectively gathered data on skiing injuries that had been sustained at the Sugarbush North ski area since 1972 and at the Sugarbush South ski area since 1981. The purpose of the current study was to document the overall rates of injury in children, adolescents, and adults participating in alpine skiing. We also sought to determine the ten most common injuries in each age-group. Finally, we analyzed short-term and long-term trends to determine if changes in equipment had had an effect on the frequency or pattern of injury. From the 1981-1982 to the 1993-1994 season, there were 2.79 injuri

[Overuse damage in modern cross-country skiing].

The skating technique in cross-country skiing has changed the demands on the human body. The purpose of this study was to determine the stress on the locomotor system of young cross-country skiers, and whether overuse injuries result from this sport activity. 51 young cross-country skiers of the Swiss national team were interviewed and examined for problems and overuse injuries of the skeleton. The investigations were repeated yearly during a follow-up time of 3 years. Most of the painful irritations and most overuse injuries were localized in the femoropatellar joint and in the distal Achille

Physiological aspects of competitive cross-country skiing.

The physiological demands of cross-country skiing require competitive skiers to have high maximal oxygen uptakes and anaerobic thresholds. Anaerobic capacity has a relatively less important role, but may be of greater importance today with the faster race velocities resulting from the new skiing techniques of ski skating. Although use of the ski skating techniques results in faster race velocities than the classical techniques, it has been found that under some conditions the double-pole technique is more economical than other skiing techniques. It is suggested that this results from a more ef

Scientific basis of competitive cross-country skiing.

The sport of cross-country skiing had its origins as a utilitarian mode of travel more than 4000 yr ago. From hunters carrying weapons and moving about on carved wooden skis, the sport has evolved to spandex-clad competitors carrying reinforced fiberglass poles while gliding on high-tech composite skis. The widespread use of ski-skating techniques coupled with the technological innovations of the last decade have profoundly changed the nature of competitive cross-country skiing. This symposium is intended to summarize the current state of scientific knowledge about the sport.

Biomechanical analysis of cross-country skiing techniques.

The development of new techniques for cross-country skiing based on skating movements has stimulated biomechanical research aimed at understanding the various movement patterns, the forces driving the motions, and the mechanical factors affecting performance. Research methods have evolved from two-dimensional kinematic descriptions of classic ski techniques to three-dimensional analyses involving measurement of the forces and energy relations of skating. While numerous skiing projects have been completed, most have focused on either the diagonal stride or the V1 skating technique on uphill ter

Physiological comparisons of cross-country skiing techniques.

Since the popularization of ski skating, several investigations have compared the physiological responses of various cross-country skiing techniques. While this work is incomplete in fully characterizing the relative physiological demands of the different skiing techniques, some conclusions can be made. The diagonal stride technique is the least economical technique for skiing on flat ground. The magnitude of the difference in economy between the diagonal stride and skating techniques for skiing on flat terrain compares well with the 10-30% faster race velocities with the skating techniques. On the measurement of ski boot viscoelasticity.

OBJECTIVES: Since the polymeric materials commonly used for ski boots feature viscoelastic properties, the results of ski boot flexion tests are expected to be influenced by flexion velocity. Devices testing at all skiing specific ankle angular velocities are currently not available. Therefore, the aims of this study were to (i) develop a system allowing the testing of ski boots at high ankle angular velocities, (ii) quantify the effect of ankle angular velocity on viscoelasticity and (iii) determine the repeatability of the system. DESIGN AND METHOD: A test bench and a lower limb prosthesis

Alpine ski injuries and their prevention.

Alpine skiing is a popular sport with significant risk of injury. Since the 1970s, injury rates have dropped from approximately 5 to 8 per 1000 skier-days to about 2 to 3 per 1000 skier-days. The nature of the injuries has also been transformed over the same period. Lower leg injuries are becoming less common while the incidence of knee sprains and upper extremity injuries is becoming more common. Much of this change can be attributed to advancements in binding technology, which effectively reduces lower leg injury, but does not adequately address the issue of knee sprains. Along with design,

Foot Orthoses in Ski Boots.

In brief: Orthoses can be used inside downhill ski boots to aid in parallel skiing. Small degrees of imbalance become significant when they affect the skier's posture and ability to turn. The author explains how orthoses, cants between the boot and the ski, and posts correct biomechanical deformities including tibial varus and valgus, subtalar varus, forefoot varus and valgus, and leg-length discrepancies. He advises skiers whose feet hurt to find a good podiatrist and a reliable ski boot fitter.

Ski boot compression syndrome.

The extensor tendons and peroneal nerve can be compressed at the ankle by the tongue of the ski boot. The resulting neuritis and synovitis may be severe enough to mimick an anterior compartment syndrome. Treatment consists of conservative methods but the paresthesiae may remain for long periods of time.
