Ascertaining infectious disease burden through primary care clinic attendance among young Aboriginal children living in four remote communities in Western Australia.

Infectious diseases contribute a substantial burden of ill-health in Australia's Aboriginal children. Skin infections have been shown to be common in remote Aboriginal communities, particularly in the Northern Territory, Australia. However, primary care data on skin and other infectious diseases among Aboriginal children living in remote areas of Western Australia are limited. We conducted a retrospective review of clinic presentations of all children aged 0 to 5 years presenting to four clinics located in the Western Desert region of Western Australia between 2007 and 2012 to determine this b

National Crisis-Induced Psychological Stress and Increased Herpes Zoster Incidence: A 10-Year Retrospective Study.

INTRODUCTION: Psychological stress is known to affect dermatological conditions, but its impact during national crises is not well established. OBJECTIVES: To assess the association between crisis-induced stress and the incidence of infectious and inflammatory skin diseases, focusing on herpes zoster. METHODS: A retrospective cross-sectional study was performed using emergency room records from Hadassah Medical Center, Israel. Skin-related visits were compared between October and December 2023 (national crisis), and the same months in 2014-2022: between the COVID-19 lockdowns (March-May 2020

An Update on the Role of Lymphatic Function in Skin Inflammatory Disorders: A Scoping Review.

The lymphatic system is essential in maintaining skin health through coordinated immunological actions. This review explores the relationship between lymphatic function and skin health, as well as the impact of lymphatic dysfunction in the development and progression of inflammatory skin disorders. A systemic search was conducted in the Web of Science, Embase, and Ovid MEDLINE databases, following the Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analyses Extension for Scoping Reviews (PRISMA-ScR) guidelines. Included studies were peer-reviewed human or animal research published in

Distribution and arrangement of multiple lesions in the anogenital region.

A series of skin diseases may affect the anogenital region with unusual presentations; therefore, a careful clinical approach is needed to make a correct diagnosis. Diseases of the anogenital area include inflammatory dermatoses, infectious lesions, and neoplastic conditions. Inflammatory dermatoses are frequently not restricted to the anogenital area and often occur on other sites. Infectious anogenital lesions can be easily confused with other benign or malignant processes. Tumors that arise on the anogenital skin are similar to those that occur on the skin elsewhere. The differential diagno

Strengths-Based Nursing to Combat Common Infectious Diseases in Indigenous Australians.

(1) Problem: The increasing incidence and prevalence of infectious diseases in Indigenous Australians (Aboriginal groups and Torres Strait Islanders) are concerning. Indigenous Australians experience the burden of infectious diseases disproportionately when compared to non-Indigenous Australians. (2) Aim: Our report aims to describe how to apply Strengths-Based Nursing (SBN) to ameliorate the impact of the most common infectious diseases in Indigenous Australians. Specifically, we aim to describe how nurses can use SBN to partner with Indigenous Australian communities to remediate, control, an

[Frequent and rare dermatological diseases in HIV patients].

HIV patients develop a variety of infectious and non-infectious diseases of the skin and mucous membranes. Some of these serve as indicator diseases for a weakening immune system. While none of the dermatological complications is pathognomonic, conditions such as oral hairy leukoplakia, herpes zoster, thrush, and eosinophilic folliculitis should make physicians consider the possibility of underlying HIV disease. Moreover, one has to consider HIV if these skin diseases take an atypical or severe course, or if they do not respond properly to appropriate medication. Frequent and rare dermatoses o

[Infectious non-venereal diseases affecting male and female external genital area].

Infectious non-venereal diseases are divided into contagious and non-contagious skin diseases, that have sometimes different and unexplained aetiology. Some diseases caused by viruses, fungi, bacteria, Candida albicans and parasites are the contagious skin diseases. The non-contagious diseases include: contact dermatitis, erythema fixum, lichen sclerosus et atrophicus, Reiter's disease and some pre-neoplasmatic lesions. The aim of the study was to demonstrate some skin lesions commonly located on external genital organs in both sexes, that should be differentiated with skin lesions in sexually

Mpox and Monkeypox Virus: Special Considerations for Athletes in Contact Sports.

Monkeypox virus infections (mpox) in humans have become increasingly common since the virus was first identified in 1970. Coverage of the ongoing mpox outbreak has emphasized the role of skin-to-skin contact in monkeypox virus transmission and has focused on the community of men who have sex with men. While close contact from sexual activity is currently the main mechanism of monkeypox virus transmission, the potential for contact sports to exacerbate the 2022 outbreak has largely been overlooked. Infectious diseases rapidly spread in sports with significant skin-to-skin contact (i.e., wrestli

Cold Atmospheric Plasma Ameliorates Skin Diseases Involving Reactive Oxygen/Nitrogen Species-Mediated Functions.

Skin diseases are mainly divided into infectious diseases, non-infectious inflammatory diseases, cancers, and wounds. The pathogenesis might include microbial infections, autoimmune responses, aberrant cellular proliferation or differentiation, and the overproduction of inflammatory factors. The traditional therapies for skin diseases, such as oral or topical drugs, have still been unsatisfactory, partly due to systematic side effects and reappearance. Cold atmospheric plasma (CAP), as an innovative and non-invasive therapeutic approach, has demonstrated its safe and effective functions in der

Diagnosed skin diseases among migrant farmworkers in North Carolina: prevalence and risk factors.

Skin diseases are common among farmworkers, yet little research documents their prevalence and risk factors. This analysis documents the prevalence of skin diseases among farmworkers in North Carolina, examines variation in the prevalence across the agricultural season, and delineates factors associated with skin disease. Data are from a longitudinal surveillance study with assessments at approximately three-week intervals from May through October 2005. The sample included 304 farmworkers from 45 camps with 1048 data points. Data collection included a structured interview and a standard set of

Prevalence of Skin Disease in Urban Haiti: A Cross-Sectional Study.

The prevalence of skin disease varies with geographic location and may be affected by cultural factors. In Haiti, the combination of poor health care access, infrastructure lack, and natural disasters may affect the prevalence of skin conditions. Unfortunately, little epidemiological information has been obtained on the prevalence of skin diseases in Haiti. The objective of this study is to describe data on the prevalence of dermatological conditions in urban areas of Haiti. Univariate, bivariate, and χ2 analyses were used to evaluate associations. During February 2016, we documented 137 patie

Skin diseases in Bamako (Mali).

BACKGROUND: Skin diseases have only recently been considered as a possible public health problem in developing countries. Data supporting this matter are scarce. The aim of this study is to report the experience of a specialized dermatologic center in Bamako (Mali) in order to complete two previous studies conducted in the Bamako area: a prevalence study in the general population and a study in nonspecialized health centers of Bamako. It is our intention to provide a comprehensive picture of the problem of skin diseases in an African developing country. METHODS: We retrospectively collected a

The Immunogenetics of Granulomatous Diseases.

Non-infectious granulomatous skin diseases are a wide category of well-defined reactive inflammatory conditions that share main similarities. While cutaneous sarcoidosis is the prototype of non-infectious (sterile) granulomatous dermatitides, there are several other entities in this group including granuloma annulare and necrobiosis lipoidica. Non-infectious granulomatous diseases are caused by complex associations between genetic situations and environmental triggers resulting in a variety of cutaneous and systemic manifestations. The genetic backgrounds of these diseases are the main topic o

Staphylococcus aureus bacteremia and infective endocarditis in a patient with epidermolytic hyperkeratosis: A case report.

BACKGROUND: Staphylococcus aureus bacteraemia (SAB) is among the leading causes of bacteraemia and infectious endocarditis. The frequency of infectious endocarditis (IE) among SAB patients ranges from 5% to 10%-12%. In adults, the characteristics of epidermolytic hyperkeratosis (EHK) include hyperkeratosis, erosions, and blisters. Patients with inflammatory skin diseases and some diseases involving the epidermis tend to exhibit a disturbed skin barrier and tend to have poor cell-mediated immunity. CASE SUMMARY: We describe a case of SAB and infective endocarditis in a 43-year-old male who pre
