Physiological and biological skin changes in pregnancy.

Pregnancy affects all organ systems in the body, including the skin. Some skin changes are physiological, whereas others such as the dermatoses of pregnancy are pathological. Dermatologists regularly encounter pregnant patients, and the identification of normal skin changes and their differentiation from disease states are essential to insure the well-being of both mother and fetus. This review discusses the physiological skin changes in pregnancy, including alterations in pigmentation, hair, nail, and connective tissue, as well as vascular and hematologic changes and modulation of glandular f

Clinical and photographic scoring of skin aging.

Chronic exposure to sunlight induces clinical, histological and physiological changes that are described as photoaging. To assess the resulting skin changes different clinical and photographic scores have been evaluated. Regarding different scoring systems a standardized grading system would be useful in a variety of indications, in particular to improve the quality of epidemiologic and clinical studies of photodamage. Photonumeric grading is considered superior to descriptive scales; however, the combination of both may suggest an advanced assessment of photodamage.

New aspects of the skin barrier organization.

The original Kocher approach was published several times in the 18921907 period. It extends in the interval between the extensor carpi ulnaris and the anconeus and consists in subperiostal release of the lateral collateral ligament (LCL), joint capsule and origin of extensors at the lateral epicondyle and their retraction anteriorly, and a similar release of the anconeus from the distal humerus and its reflection posteriorly. This provides an extensive approach to the elbow. Today this approach is described in the textbooks in various modifications that have little in common with the original

Focal and generalized alopecia.

Focal or generalized alopecia is defined as hair loss affecting the ventral, lateral, perineal, and dorsal aspects of the trunk of the cat, usually in a symmetric pattern. This may be attributable to failure of hair coat production, excess loss of hair due to self trauma, or excess shedding of whole hairs. Self trauma is the most common cause of hair loss and is associated particularly with flea allergy dermatitis. Other causes of hair loss are reviewed.

Evoking Cutaneous Reflexes During Human Walking II. An Open-Source Pseudo-Randomization Approach.

This paper, the second in a two-part series, outlines a low-cost, open-source, pseudo-randomization approach for measuring cutaneous reflexes during human walking. The protocol guides users through integrating an Arduino Uno microcontroller, a VICON data acquisition system, and an electrical stimulation device. A custom code was developed in C++, and steps are provided to guide users in downloading and integrating it with an Arduino. This setup provides researchers the ability to define key experimental parameters such as the number of gait cycles to include in quantifying the average time of

A comprehensive comparison of facial skin hydration based on capacitance and conductance measurements in Chinese women.

OBJECTIVES: The aim of this study was to compare the data of conductance and capacitance measurements of facial skin hydration and to evaluate and discuss the advantages and disadvantages of the different approaches. METHODS: We measured skin capacitance (Corneometer® CM 825) and skin conductance (Skicon-200EX®) on 30 pre-defined facial sites of 125 Chinese women, resulting in 3750 readings per device. The data were analysed and compared, and continuous colour maps were generated on a 3D avatar for capacitance, conductance, relative difference (Δ%) and correlation (R-value) by interpolating b

Androgens, Androgen Receptors, and the Skin: From the Laboratory to the Clinic With Emphasis on Clinical and Therapeutic Implications.

The effects of androgens on human skin include growth and differentiation of sebaceous glands, terminal hair growth, epidermal barrier function, wound healing, and modification of the cutaneous microbiome. Androgens exert their activities via ligand formation with intracytoplasmic androgen receptors which can then translocate to the nucleus and interact with genetic androgen response elements to influence signaling cascades. Differences in tissue distribution and activities of enzymes that modify androgen synthesis and catabolism, variations related to gender and ethnicity/race, and genetic po

The potential role of microorganisms in the development of rosacea.

Rosacea is a chronic cutaneous disorder characterized by centrofacial persisting erythema, telangiectases, papules, pustules, edema, phymas and ocular involvement. Despite being one of the most common skin disorders, its pathogenesis remains unclear and controversial. Although the disease triggering factors are well recognized, the underlying causes of rosacea have not yet been identified. Several different postulates about its pathogenesis can be found in the medical literature. Abnormalities of the pilosebaceous unit, as well as genetic, vascular, inflammatory, environmental and microbial fa

Light and TEM study of nonregenerated and experimentally regenerated scales of Lepisosteus oculatus (Holostei) with particular attention to ganoine formation.

BACKGROUND: The structure of nonregenerated and experimentally regenerated scales of the holostean fish Lepisosteus oculatus and the events taking place before and during ganoine deposition on the scale surface were studied. The aim of this study was to answer the question of the origin of the ganoine in lepisosteids, the scales of which are devoid of dentine, and to compare them to ganoine formation in polypterid scales and to enamel formation in teeth. METHODS: Two adult specimens were used and the scale structure was studied using light and transmission electron microscopy. Regeneration wa

More than skin-deep: Integration of skin-based and musculoskeletal reference frames in localization of touch.

The skin of the forearm is, in one sense, a flat 2-dimensional (2D) sheet, but in another sense approximately cylindrical, mirroring the 3-dimensional (3D) volumetric shape of the arm. The role of frames of reference based on the skin as a 2D sheet versus based on the musculoskeletal structure of the arm remains unclear. When we rotate the forearm from a pronated to a supinated posture, the skin on its surface is displaced. Thus, a marked location will slide with the skin across the underlying flesh, and the touch perceived at this location should follow this displacement if it is localized wi

Hierarchical Poromechanical Approach to Investigate the Impact of Mechanical Loading on Human Skin Micro-Circulation.

Extensive research on human skin anatomy has revealed that the skin functions as a complex multi-scale and multi-phase system, containing up to 70% of bounded and free circulating water. The presence of moving fluids significantly influences the mechanical and biological responses of the skin, affecting its time-dependent behavior and the transport of essential nutrients and oxygen to cells. Poroelastic modeling emerges as a promising approach to investigate biologically relevant phenomena at finer scales while embedding crucial mechanisms at larger scales as it facilitates the integration of

The influence of interferon on healthy and diseased skin.

Type I interferons (IFNs) are an immunomodulatory class of cytokines that serve to protect against viral and bacterial infection. In addition, mounting evidence suggests IFNs, particularly type I but also IFNγ, are important to the pathogenesis of autoimmune and inflammatory skin diseases, such as cutaneous lupus erythematosus (CLE). Understanding the role of IFNs is relevant to anti-viral responses in the skin, skin biology, and therapeutics for these IFN-related conditions. Type I IFNs (α and β) are produced by recruited inflammatory cells and by the epidermis itself (IFNκ) and have importan

The pH of the skin surface and its impact on the barrier function.

The 'acid mantle' of the stratum corneum seems to be important for both permeability barrier formation and cutaneous antimicrobial defense. However, the origin of the acidic pH, measurable on the skin surface, remains conjectural. Passive and active influencing factors have been proposed, e.g. eccrine and sebaceous secretions as well as proton pumps. In recent years, numerous investigations have been published focusing on the changes in the pH of the deeper layers of the stratum corneum, as well as on the influence of physiological and pathological factors. The pH of the skin follows a sharp g

Total Defense + Repair: A Novel Concept in Solar Protection and Skin Rejuvenation.

For more than a century, solar radiation has been known to contribute significantly to the extrinsic aging of skin. Until recently, this was almost exclusively attributed to the photodamage caused by ultraviolet (UV) light. However, a growing body of evidence now indicates that both infrared (IR) and visible light may also contribute to extrinsic skin aging. Infrared radiation, comprised of IR-A, IR-B, and IR-C, accounts for 54.3% of the total solar radiation reaching the skin. Studies have shown that IR radiation is also responsible for skin aging. Thus, IR-A radiation regulates hundreds of g
