Preliminary Examination of the Effects of Focused Ultrasound on Living Skin and Temperature at the Skin-Transducer Interface.

Transcranial Focused Ultrasound Stimulation (tFUS) is a new, rapidly growing field related to the study and treatment of brain circuits. Establishing safety cutoffs for focused ultrasound is crucial for non-ablative neurological ultrasound experiments. In addition to potential focal heating, there is concern about temperature elevation at the skin surface. Much work has been performed at or near the FDA guideline of ISPTA.3 = 720 mW/cm2, which technically only applies to diagnostic, not therapeutic, ultrasound. Furthermore, evidence of brain tissue damage on histology in the focal region has b

Effect of skin surface temperature on skin pigmentation during contact and intralesional cryosurgery of keloids.

BACKGROUND: This 15-month study was designed to compare the effect of skin surface temperature on skin pigmentation following a single intralesional or contact cryosurgical treatment of keloids. PATIENTS/METHODS: Thirty Caucasian patients with 45 keloids present for more than 6 months were included in this study. Twenty-one keloids were treated by the contact method while the remaining 24 scars were managed using an intralesional cryosurgery technique. The skin surface temperature at the keloids was measured and recorded using a Ni/Cd thermocouple. Four variables of the thermal history were e

Temperature-Responsive Cellulose-Based Janus Hydrogel as Underwater Electronic Skin.

This study develops a Janus-structured hydrogel sensor (P(AA-co-PNIPAM/CDs)) through template-assisted copolymerization of acrylic acid and N-isopropylacrylamide with dopamine-cellulose carbon dots (CDs). The hydrogel demonstrates temperature-responsive strain sensing regulation and enhanced interfacial adhesion, achieving remarkable peel strengths of 237.8 N m-1 (air, 25 °C) and 42.7 N m-1 (water, 50 °C). CD incorporation improves conductivity (1.219 mS cm-1) while reinforcing dynamic adhesion through hydrogen bonding and π-π interactions. The dual-responsive hydrogel exhibits exceptional joi

Skin conductance algesimeter is unreliable during sudden perioperative temperature increases.

OBJECTIVES: Pain assessment in anesthetized and non-communicative patients remains a challenge. Clinical signs such as tachycardia, hypertension, sweat and tears, have a low specificity for pain and should therefore ideally be replaced by more specific monitoring techniques. Skin conductance variability has been demonstrated to establish a patients' sensitivity to pain, but may be influenced by temperature changes that leads to profuse sweating. The aim of this pilot study was to test skin conductance changes during sudden temperature changes due to hyperthermic intraperitoneal chemotherapy (H

Supraclavicular skin temperature and BAT activity in lean healthy adults.

The 'gold standard' for measuring brown adipose tissue (BAT) in humans is [(18)F]FDG-PET/CT-imaging. With this technique subjects are exposed to ionizing radiation and are therefore limited in the number of scans that can be performed. We investigated the relation between supraclavicular skin temperatures and BAT activity values using a strictly temperature-controlled air-cooling protocol. Data of 36 male subjects was analyzed. BAT activity was evaluated by [(18)F]FDG-PET/CT-imaging and skin temperature was measured by means of wireless temperature sensors. Supraclavicular skin temperature dro

Palmar skin blood flow and temperature responses throughout endoscopic sympathectomy.

Thoracic surgical sympathectomy is often performed to treat primary palmar and axillary hyperhidrosis. An increase in palmar skin temperature is frequently used to identify the success of the procedure. Because changes in palmar skin temperature occur secondary to changes in skin blood flow, the objective of this study was to test the hypothesis that monitoring palmar skin blood flow would provide greater temporal resolution relative to monitoring palmar skin temperature. In 11 patients with palmar and/or axillary hyperhidrosis, we measured palmar skin temperature and blood flow (via laser Dop

Liquid crystal skin thermometry: an accurate reflection of core temperature?

Oesophageal, rectal, bladder, tympanic and pulmonary artery sites are used intraoperatively to measure body temperature. However, the temperatures measured at each site have different physiological and practical importance. The present two-part study sought to compare liquid crystal (CR) skin temperature with other temperature monitors which are used routinely during surgery. The first part compared CR with oesophageal (OS) temperature during general inhalational anaesthesia. The second part compared CR with OS, pulmonary artery (PA), and bladder (BL) temperatures during the periods of rapid t

Classification of chronic venous diseases based on skin temperature patterns.

Objective. Infrared thermography has the potential to complement the classification of chronic venous diseases (CVD), but lacks sophisticated insights on the association between recorded skin temperatures and the severity of CVD. This research aims to identify temperature patterns in the lower legs of patients that are distinct in specific forms of CVD, including florid ulcers.Approach. Infrared images were acquired in a clinical trial with 36 patients and segmented using a region selection algorithm. The regions were analyzed with respect to seven predefined features. The most prominent therm

Altered skin-temperature regulation in narcolepsy relates to sleep propensity.

STUDY OBJECTIVES: In healthy subjects, sleep propensity increases when the distal skin temperature increases relative to the proximal skin temperature. This increase results from increased blood flow in the skin of the extremities and is, among other factors, controlled by the hypothalamic circadian clock, as is sleep. Because narcolepsy is characterized by hypothalamic alterations, we studied skin temperature in narcoleptic patients in relation to their characteristically increased sleep propensity during the day. DESIGN: Distal and proximal skin temperature and their gradient (DPG) were mea

No effect of skin temperature on human ventilation response to hypercapnia during light exercise with a normothermic core temperature.

Hyperthermia potentiates the influence of CO(2) on pulmonary ventilation (.V(E)). It remains to be resolved how skin and core temperatures contribute to the elevated exercise ventilation response to CO(2). This study was conducted to assess the influences of mean skin temperature (_T(SK)) and end-tidal PCO(2) (P(ET)CO(2)) on .V(E) during submaximal exercise with a normothermic esophageal temperature (T(ES)). Five males and three females who were 1.76 +/- 0.11 m tall (mean +/- SD), 75.8 +/- 15.6 kg in weight and 22.0 +/- 2.2 years of age performed three 1 h exercise trials in a climatic chamber

Regional skin temperature, heat flow and conductance in preterm neonates nursed in low and in neutral environmental temperature.

The changes of regional dry heat loss and skin temperature in 15 healthy preterm babies, 8 with a gestational age (GA) of 33-36 weeks and 7 with a GA of 28-31 weeks, were studied under controlled conditions at environmental temperatures ranging from 29.5 to 34.0 degrees C. In both groups of babies the skin temperature for all body regions followed the changes in operative temperatures. Regional dry heat losses also closely followed the external temperature gradient. In the 33-36 weeks GA neonates the regional changes in thermal conductance (index of cutaneous blood flow) indicated that only th

Skin temperature of UV-induced erythema correlated to laser Doppler flowmetry and skin reflectance measured redness.

BACKGROUND/AIMS: The sensitivity of human skin to UV radiation is investigated by visual grading of the resulting erythema reactions 24 h after exposure to a series of increasing UV doses. Visual erythema assessment is, however, subjective and depends on pigmentation and redness of the adjacent un-irradiated skin and can be aided by skin reflectance spectroscopy and laser Doppler blood flow measurements. Erythema is accompanied by a raised skin temperature, and this reaction might be utilised as a simple objective measurement of UV sensitivity. METHODS: Sixteen patients with cutaneous maligna

Zero-heat flux skin temperature tracks nasopharyngeal temperature during cardiac surgery with cardiopulmonary bypass: a prospective observational study.

BACKGROUND: Monitoring both nasopharyngeal temperature (TNP) and arterial blood temperature at the CPB arterial outlet is routinely used in cardiac surgery with cardiopulmonary bypass (CPB). We examined the agreement and temperature tracking ability of zero-heat-flux skin temperature (TZHF) compared with TNP in cardiac surgery. METHODS: Of 40 patients scheduled to undergo cardiac surgery with CPB, paired TZHF and TNP measurements were recorded for 33 patients, yielding 8610 measurements across pre-CPB, CPB-cooling, CPB-maintenance, CPB-rewarming, and post-CPB. RESULTS: In the final, trimmed

Influence of electroacupuncture stimulation on skin temperature, skin blood flow, muscle blood volume and pupil diameter.

OBJECTIVE: To examine the effect of electroacupuncture (EA) stimulation on multiple physiological indices and to evaluate both local and systemic physiological responses induced by the stimulation. METHODS: 15 healthy male college students participated in an experimental crossover study. They received two kinds of interventions: one with EA stimulation and one without EA stimulation on different days. Two disposable acupuncture needles were inserted at two traditional acupuncture points (ST36 and ST38), located along the anterior tibialis muscle. EA stimulation was administered for 10 min. Sk

Temperature and Ultraviolet Radiation Influence the Skin Microbiome of Humpback Whales.

The skin microbiome of humpback whales harbours diverse microbial communities that play a crucial role in host skin protection and environmental interaction. However, studies on cetacean skin microbiomes in the Southern Hemisphere focus on feeding grounds, with limited information on microbiome dynamics at breeding grounds and during migration across contrasting habitats. We characterised the skin microbiome of 46 humpback whales from two seasonal habitats: the Magellan Strait feeding ground and the Ecuadorian coast breeding ground, comparing age, sex, environmental conditions, and seawater.
