Sleep bruxism is the rhythmic or nonrhythmic masticatory muscle activity that occurs during sleep. It is conventionally diagnosed by a rule-based algorithm. Candidate muscle bursts are flagged against a fixed electromyographic (EMG) amplitude threshold, classified by duration into phasic, tonic, or mixed episodes, and counted into an hourly rate compared against a second threshold. These thresholds generalize poorly across individuals and nights. This has motivated a growing body of artificial intelligence (AI) research aimed at replacing one or more stages of this classical algorithm with a l

OBJECTIVES: Sleep bruxism (SB), characterized by repetitive jaw-muscle activity during sleep, is often suggested as a cause of temporomandibular disorders (TMD), orofacial pain, and headache. This study aimed to challenge the relationship between jaw-muscle electromyographic (EMG) activity during sleep and jaw muscle symptoms including pain by modulation of the levels of EMG activity. Contingent electrical stimulation (CES) using a portable single-channel EMG device was applied at different stimulus intensities to inhibit jaw muscle activity.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: Sixty probable sleep-bruxer

A 44-year-old woman, who was suffering from widespread musculoskeletal pain, fatigue, and sleep disorder, was diagnosed as fibromyalgia. There was no apparent organic disease. Duloxetine therapy was introduced with a dose of 60 mg/day at bedtime. A few days later her husband noted severe teeth clenching and associated loud grinding noises during sleep. Then, duloxetine dosage was reduced to 30 mg/day. The bruxism continued with this dosage, thus the therapy was discontinued. The bruxism resolved after cessation. Three weeks later, duloxetine therapy was restarted at the dosage of 60 mg/day. On

This study examined (1) the relationships between electromyographic-measured nocturnal bruxism, self-reported stress, and several personality variables, and (2) the relationship between belief in a stress-bruxism relationship and self-reported stress. One hundred adult bruxers completed a battery of personality questionnaires, indicated whether they believed in a stress-bruxism relationship, presented for a dental examination, and had dental impressions taken. Subsequently, electromyographic measurements of bruxing frequency and duration were recorded for fifteen consecutive nights. Prior to e

INTRODUCTION: Temporomandibular disorder is an umbrella term for various clinical problems affecting the muscles of mastication, temporomandibular joint and associated structures. This disorder has a multifactor etiology, with oral parafunctional habits considered an important co-factor. Among such habits, sleep bruxism is considered a causal agent involved in the initiation and/or perpetuation of temporomandibular disorder. That condition can result in pain otologic symptoms.
OBJECTIVE: The aim of the present study was to investigate the relationship between temporomandibular disorder and bo

Introduction: Comorbid insomnia and obstructive sleep apnea (COMISA) is not a well-identified sleep disorder, despite having a significant impact on health. This study investigates the relationship between sleep bruxism (SB) and sleep architecture in patients with COMISA, obstructive sleep apnea (OSA), and in those without any sleep disorders. Methods: 119 patients were included in the study and divided into three groups: OSA, COMISA, and a control group. Polysomnographic (PSG) examination provided parameters related to sleep architecture, OSA, and characteristics of SB. Results: The bruxism e

BACKGROUND: Rhythmic masticatory muscle activity (RMMA) is a biomarker of sleep-related bruxism (SRB). Sleep quality and sympathetic nervous system activity are associated with SRB onset. We focused on fluctuations in blood glucose levels during sleep, which are considered to affect these factors.
OBJECTIVES: This study aimed to clarify the effects of stabilising blood glucose levels through dietary instructions on SRB improvement.
METHODS: Nineteen healthy adults diagnosed with SRB were included in this study. The first 7 days were the non-intervention period, and the second 7 days were the

The protective properties of sleep bruxism (SB) for obstructive sleep apnea (OSA) are often suggested in the literature. The main objective of the present study is to assess the alleged protective effects of SB on the duration of respiratory events and blood saturation in OSA patients. The study involved data from 241 subjects with mild and moderate OSA who underwent polysomnography, which was evaluated according to American Academy of Sleep Medicine guidelines. Two cut-off points for SB diagnosis were established-bruxism episodes index (BEI) = 2 and BEI = 4. Out of the 241 patients, 66 subjec

Bruxism associated with antidepressant use is an under-recognized phenomenon. The use of citalopram has gained wide acceptance in the treatment of depression and anxiety disorders; however, the consumption of this medication during lactation and pregnancy has not been carefully characterized. There are limited studies about its side effects in the breastfeeding period. Here, we report a rare case of citalopram-induced sleep bruxism in a 9-month-old female breastfed infant whose mother used SSRI agent citaloporm for her anxiety disorder. Within 2 weeks of initiating her citalopram treatment, wi
