AIM: To describe the epidemiology of slipped capital femoral epiphysis in NZ Maori and Pacific children residing in Auckland compared with NZ European children.
METHODS: The charts and radiographs of 211 children admitted with 307 slipped capital femoral epiphyses to Starship Children's Hospital between 1988 and 2000 were reviewed.
RESULTS: The average age at first presentation was 132.6 +/-16.7 months in girls (range 95 to 170 months) and 149.5 +/- 19.3 months in boys (range 99 to 190 months), p <0.05. The age at presentation was not statistically different between the three ethnic groups.

BACKGROUND: The age-weight test was described to aid the clinician in defining demographic predictors of an atypical slipped capital femoral epiphysis. We wished to retest the accuracy and applicability of the age-weight test and height differences in children with atypical and typical slipped capital femoral epiphyses.
METHODS: A retrospective review of the records for all children with slipped capital femoral epiphysis from 1998 through 2003 was performed. Gender, race, chronological age, weight, height, the duration of symptoms, and the laterality of the slip were recorded. The slip angle

Unstable slipped capital femoral epiphysis can have disastrous complications including osteonecrosis and chondrolysis. It has been shown that 20% to 80% of patients may develop a contralateral slip ≤18 months after diagnosis. The purpose of this article is to report and characterize patients who developed bilateral unstable slips. After Institutional Review Board approval, the patients included were only those with bilateral unstable slipped capital femoral epiphyses. A minimum 2-year follow-up was required. Seven patients, all female, were included in the study, with an average age of 11.4 ye

Slipped capital femoral epiphysis occurs during the adolescent growth spurt and is most frequent in obese children. Up to 40 percent of cases are bilateral. Recent classification methods emphasize epiphyseal stability rather than symptom duration. Most cases of slipped capital femoral epiphyses are stable and have a good prognosis if diagnosed early. Unstable slipped capital femoral epiphysis has a much poorer prognosis because of the high risk of avascular necrosis. Early radiographic clues are the metaphyseal blanch sign and Klein's line. Once diagnosed, treatment should begin immediately. T

Slippage of the upper femoral epiphysis can occur in association with multiple endocrine imbalances. This report documents the second case of primary parathyroid adenoma with hyperparathyroidism and symptomatic concomitant slipped capital femoral epiphyses. In the evaluation of children with slipped capital femoral epiphysis, care must be taken to eliminate other treatable disease states that are known to be associated with this phenomenon. The capital femoral physes in this child with hyperparathyroidism promptly closed following removal of the parathyroid adenoma.

CONTEXT: Slipped capital femoral epiphysis is a well-recognized skeletal complication of renal osteodystrophy in adolescence, which is distinct from idiopathic slipped capital femoral epiphysis in its etiology.
OBJECTIVE: We report a case of severe mixed-type renal osteodystrophy with metaphyseal bone collapse that mimicked slipped capital femoral epiphyses.
METHODS: Case history, laboratory and radiological evaluation, and bone biopsies are discussed.
RESULTS: A 14-yr-old girl presented with left hip pain showing bilateral metaphyseal bone collapse accompanied with posterior-inferior displ

PURPOSE: Compare slipped capital femoral epiphysis stabilized on fracture versus radiolucent table.
METHODS: Twenty unilateral stable mild slipped capital femoral epiphyses were stabilized in-situ with a single screw. Age, sex, side, body-mass index, type of table, anesthesia time, surgery time, fluoroscopy time, number of fluoroscopy images, preoperative/postoperative lateral head-shaft angle, and number of screw threads engaging the epiphysis were noted.
RESULTS: There were no differences in the measured parameters.
CONCLUSIONS: Stabilization of mild slipped capital femoral epiphysis can

A case of slipped capital femoral epiphyses is reported which occurred in association with primary hyperparathyroidism. Only two similar cases have been found in the English literature. The patient was a man, 16 years of age, who presented with bilateral slipped epiphyses. Investigation showed that he had primary hyperparathyroidism due to a parathyroid adenoma. At a single operation, the epiphyses were pinned in situ, and the adenoma removed. The result was satisfactory.

Slipped capital femoral epiphysis always requires surgical treatment. The operative technique depends on the degree of dislocation and the type of the slip. The goal of treatment is to achieve physeal stability until the epiphyseal plate closes without harming the further femoral growth. In situ fixation is generally recommended for slipped capital femoral epiphyses of a mild degree. For this purpose the technique of dynamic screw fixation (DSF) is applicable using a long cannulated screw with a short thread.DSF is easy to handle, provides sufficient long-term fixation of the epiphysis, does n

Five patients with concomitant endocrinopathy and slipped capital femoral epiphysis were studied in detail. One had diabetes and hypothyroidism, one had hypothyroidism, one had hypergonadotropic hypogonadism and two had a craniopharyngioma (one of whom had severe panhypopituitarism post-operatively). An additional seven patients with cranio-pharyngioma revealed marked delay in closure of epiphyses and an additional undiagnosed case of slipped capital femoral epiphysis. Of the six patients with slipped capital femoral epiphysis, three had bilateral and three unilateral involvement. Of the five

Proximal femoral osteotomy may improve clinical outcomes in patients with residual deformity after slipped capital femoral epiphysis. Whether this procedure improves abductor mechanics is not well established. We hypothesized that abductor lengths would be shorter in patients with slipped capital femoral epiphysis compared with normal controls, and a femoral neck base osteotomy would create more normal abductor lengths than an osteotomy performed below the greater trochanter. Abductor muscle lengths were measured in normal, mild, and severe slipped capital femoral epiphyses sawbone models and

Slipped proximal humeral epiphyses as a sequela of radiotherapy were identified in two children treated for Ewing's sarcoma in whom the shoulder was included in the field of treatment. The radiation doses were slightly greater than those in children developing slipped capital femoral epiphyses following radiotherapy. The lesser stress about the shoulder compared to the hip is believed to be the reason this is an infrequent complication of radiotherapy.

The incidence of orthopaedic surgery for young people with childhood onset of orthopaedic disabilities is not well documented. This study tabulated that incidence in the past two decades in California. Trauma, tumors, and hand surgery were not included in the study. Common pediatric orthopaedic diagnoses by ICD-9 code requiring CPT orthopaedic surgical procedures were tabulated in three years: 1983, 1990, and 1999. The most common procedures in each of these years studied were, in order of incidence, scoliosis, congenital hip problems, slipped femoral capital epiphyses, and clubfeet. The incid

This is a case report of a 35-year-old man with multiple open epiphyses and a slipping of the right capital femoral epiphysis. An endocrine evaluation revealed primary hypothyroidism. The patient was placed on hormonal therapy and an in situ hip pinning was performed to prevent further slip. The operation was successful. The symptoms disappeared and all of the epiphyses were closed within one year. In an adult patient presenting with slipped capital femoral epiphysis, endocrine dysfunction such as hypothyroidism should be suspected.

In-situ pinning of a slipped capital femoral epiphysis is the most common form of treatment for this problem. To find out if remodelling of the upper femur after pinning occurs often enough to justify this form of treatment and whether secondary osteotomies are required for residual deformity, 82 patients with slipped capital femoral epiphyses were reviewed. X-ray films were studied sequentially, noting remodelling changes in the femoral head and neck. Sixty-eight percent of moderate to severe slips that could be properly assessed showed signs of remodelling. The authors recognized two distinc

The cases of 2 patients with valgus slipped capital femoral epiphysis are presented. Additional imaging studies provide support for true posterolateral epiphyseal displacement. Increased femoral anteversion and coxa valga contribute to the pathogenesis of valgus slipped capital femoral epiphysis. In situ pin fixation is recommended for stable valgus slipped capital femoral epiphysis. The importance of valgus slipped capital femoral epiphysis lies in its recognition and appropriate screw placement when internal fixation is used. The percutaneous technique should be used with caution. A limited
