A review of anesthetic procedures used in Andean bears (Tremarctos ornatus), sloth bears (Melursus ursinus), and giant pandas (Ailuropoda melanoleuca) housed at the Smithsonian Institution's National Zoological Park (NZP) from 1995 to 2016 was performed. A total of 146 anesthetic procedures (55 procedures on 12 Andean bears, 38 procedures on nine sloth bears, and 53 procedures on five giant pandas) occurred at NZP during this time frame. Induction protocols involved some combination of ketamine (K; n = 121), tiletamine-zolazepam (TZ; n = 91), medetomidine (M; n = 67), xylazine (X; n = 42), mid

The blood meals of 2,569 phlebotomine sandflies from areas endemic for cutaneous leishmaniasis in the central Amazon of Brazil were tested by the microcapillary precipitin method to determine their vertebrate hosts. The two-toed sloth, Choloepus didactylus, was the predominant host of two incriminated vectors of Leishmania braziliensis guyanensis in the region, Lutzomyia umbratilis and Lu. anduzei (64.0% and 63.6%, respectively). The Lu. "shannoni" group, a complex of several species in which females are indistinguishable, also fed predominantly on sloths (73.0%). Species comprising the Lu. "s

A total of 52,033 sandflies, comprising 33 species, was collected in tree buttresses in Panama. Of the 18,025 females collected, 1,592 (8.8%) engorged phlebotomines of 18 species contained sufficient blood for identification of their vertebrate hosts by the microcapillary precipitin method. Lutzomyia ylephiletor and Lu. trapidoi, vectors of Leishmania braziliensis, had fed predominantly on sloths (47.0% and 65.1%, respectively). Lutzomyia shannoni, a common non-anthropophilic sandfly in tree buttresses also fed most frequently on sloths (28.0%) and probably also contributes to the Leishmania t

Bear attacks are reported from nearly every part of the world. The chance of a human encountering a bear increases as the remote bear territory diminishes. The sloth bear is one of the three species of bears found in India, which inhabits the forests of India and its neighboring countries. Here we describe a teenager who came to us with a critical injury involving the face, temporal and occipital bones inflicted by a sloth bear attack. He underwent a temporal exploration, facial nerve decompression, pinna reconstruction, and occipital bone repair to save him from fatality.

Routine examination of tissues from wild forest rodents from Amapá, north Brazil, revealed Pneumocystis carinii in lung smears from a newly captured Oryzomys capito (Cricetidae). Acute, fatal infections with this parasite are also recorded in a number of captive "coatimundis", Nasua narica (Carnivora: Procyonidae) and a sloth, Bradypus tridactylus (Edentata). Pneumocystis was also encountered in lung smears from a newly captured and apparently healthy sloth, Choloepus didactylus. The presence of infection in newly captured animals leads us to believe that the fatal, fulminating pneumocystosis

Vestigial organs are historical echoes of past phenotypes. Determining whether a specific organ constitutes a functional or vestigial structure can be a challenging task, given that distinct levels of atrophy may arise between and within lineages. The mammalian pineal gland, an endocrine organ involved in melatonin biorhythmicity, represents a classic example, often yielding contradicting anatomical observations. In Xenarthra (sloths, anteaters, and armadillos), a peculiar mammalian order, the presence of a distinct pineal organ was clearly observed in some species (i.e., Linnaeus's two-toed s

In this study, we investigated infectious canine hepatitis (ICH), caused by canine adenovirus 1 (CAdV-1), in 125 bear carcasses submitted for examination. CAdV-1 is known to cause severe disease in domestic dogs and in wild canids and bears. Using molecular and/or histopathological methods, CAdV-1 infection was confirmed in 12 cases: 11 in sloth bears (Melursus ursinus) and one in an Asiatic black bear (Ursus thibetanus). Affected captive bears exhibited acute onset of high fever, jaundice, bloody vomitus, and foul-smelling diarrhoea, followed by death. Necropsy revealed widespread congestion

Bradypus variegatus, popularly known as common sloth or brown-throated sloth, is a species with wide geographical distribution in Brazil. Expand on the literature about the species, we aimed to describe the morphology of its eye and its main annexes. For this study, six frozen specimens donated to the Animal Morphological Research Laboratory of the Federal Rural University of Amazonia were used. The specimens were fixed in a 10% aqueous solution of formaldehyde. The structures that constitute the ocular apparatus were identified and described after dissection and histological analysis using li

Even if human beings are the most intelligent among all living beings, they are still not immune to attack from wild animals. Human contact with bears has become more frequent as their habitat is being endangered by frequent deforestation. The sloth bear is one of the few bear species found in India, especially in the hilly areas of Southern Odisha. Bears are highly intelligent and omnivorous animals with long claws coupled with powerful shoulder. Here, we describe the tale of a poor tribal male's encounter with a sloth bear resulting in critical injuries to face, scalp, skull bone, with brain

The eco-epidemiology of American cutaneous leishmaniasis (ACL) is driven by animal reservoir species that are a source of infection for sand flies that serve as vectors infecting humans with Leishmania spp parasites. The emergence and re-emergence of this disease across Latin America calls for further studies to identify reservoir species associated with enzootic transmission. Here, we present results from a survey of 52 individuals from 13 wild mammal species at endemic sites in Costa Rica and Panama where ACL mammal hosts have not been previously studied. For Leishmania spp. diagnostics we e

Accurate anatomical and physiological knowledge of the stomach of the three-toed sloth is essential for effective clinical, surgical and dietary management, particularly in rehabilitation settings. This study analyzed the holotopy, topography, syntopy, and macro- and microscopic morphology of the stomach in thirteen B. variegatus specimens. Macroscopically, the stomach was located in the cranial, middle and abdominal regions and extended over the xiphoid, hypochondriac, lateral and umbilical regions. It had syntopic relationships with the diaphragm, liver, intestines, uterus (in females), vert

Endemic persistence of cutaneous leishmaniasis is described in El Aguacate, a community established in the forest of central Panama about 75 years ago. Physiographic pecularities partially isolate El Aguacate from other villages in the region. Some of the original forest environment has been preserved and man-biting species of phlebotomine sandflies were abundant as was the two-toed sloth, Choloepus hoffmanni, the principal reservoir host of Leishmania braziliensis in Panama. The inhabitants, as well as their dogs, were examined for natural leishmaniasis in 1969 and 1973. Mammals and phlebotom

Choloepus didactylus (two-toed sloth) is a Xenarthran mammal whose morphology has so far been little studied. Given the increasing number of sloths requiring clinical and surgical interventions, this lack of clarity regarding anatomical features and landmarks has had a negative impact on veterinary decision-making for this species. We therefore sought to describe the topography of the medullary cone (MC) of Choloepus didactylus in order to provide guidance to qualified professionals on the ideal access for locoregional anesthesia. In evaluating four specimens, radiographs and dissections revea

Euphractus sexcinctus is a wild mammal native to the Americas; they have great diversity and are not in danger of extinction like other armadillo species. Despite the diversity, the morphology of several biological systems of this species has not been fully described. This study details the gross and microscopic anatomy of the urinary system in Euphractus sexcinctus, a six-banded armadillo, compared with other mammalian study models. Six animals were dissected in the study. In the anatomical analysis, the kidneys, ureters, urinary bladder and urethra were dissected and photographed; then, frag

INTRODUCTION: Sloth bear, a native species of Indian subcontinent, has a population estimate of 1200-1500 in Jharkhand. Human habitats in proximity to forest reserve cause frequent human-bear interactions and thus bear attack injuries. Face is the most common site affected. This is a prospective study performed to evaluate the incidence and pattern of maxillofacial trauma after bear attack and the outcome of the treatment provided to them.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: Patients with bear attack injuries reporting to the outpatient department were recruited for the study. The incidence was recorded i

The Toca das Onças cave is one of the most important Quaternary mammal deposits of Brazil. Two different hypotheses have been proposed to explain the preservation mode of its skeletal remains: either the animals climbed down into the cave, or it could have functioned as a natural trap. Evaluation of pathological modifications on three articulated vertebrae of a single adult giant ground sloth Eremotherium laurillardi reveals a particular type of bone fracture caused by compressive force on the vertebral column, which split the vertebral bodies in the sagittal plane. This diagnosis suggests tha

Although mammals of the superorder Xenarthra are considered hosts of a wide range of zoonotic agents, works aiming at investigating the role of these animals as hosts for bacteria with zoonotic potential are rare. The present study aimed to investigate the occurrence and molecularly characterize Coxiella burnetii and haemoplasma (haemotropic mycoplasmas) DNA in blood and spleen samples from 397 free-living Xenarthra mammals (233 sloths, 107 anteaters and 57 armadillos) in five Brazilian states (Mato Grosso do Sul, São Paulo, Pará, Rondônia and Rio Grande do Sul). Characterization of Leishmania colombiensis sp.n. is presented, which on the basis of biological and molecular criteria, appears to be a new member of the L. braziliensis complex. A total of nine isolates of the new parasite were made in Colombia and Panama between 1980 and 1986: two from human cases of cutaneous leishmaniasis, six from phlebotomine sand flies, and one from a sloth. Although most closely related to L. lainsoni, L. colombiensis sp.n. is clearly distinguishable from other members of the genus by its reactivity with monoclonal antibodies, isoenzyme electrophoresis, and restrictio

In a survey of 296 sylvatic animals captured from virgin forests in the north-eastern and south-western Amazon of Brazil, Histoplasma capsulatum was isolated, via the indirect hamster inoculation method, from the liver and spleen of four common opossums Didelphis marsupialis and two pacas Agouti paca. The infected animals did not show any clinical symptoms or histopathology. The known Amazonian mammalian species with natural histoplasmosis now total five, the previously reported species being the spiny rat Proechimys guyannensis, the two-toed sloth Choloepus didactylus and the nine-banded arma
