Head-Mounted Display-Based Application for Cognitive Training.

Virtual Reality (VR) has had significant advances in rehabilitation, due to the gamification of cognitive activities that facilitate treatment. On the other hand, Immersive Virtual Reality (IVR) produces outstanding results due to the interactive features with the user. This work introduces a VR application for memory rehabilitation by walking through a maze and using the Oculus Go head-mounted display (HMD) technology. The mechanics of the game require memorizing geometric shapes while the player progresses in two modes, autonomous or manual, with two levels of difficulty depending on the num

Enhancing Obstacle Visibility with Augmented Reality Improves Mobility in People with Low Vision.

Avoiding obstacles while navigating is a challenge for people with low vision, who have impaired yet functional vision, which impacts their mobility, safety, and independence. This study investigates the impact of using Augmented Reality (AR) to enhance the visibility of obstacles for people with low vision. Twenty-five participants (14 with low vision and 11 typically sighted) wore smart glasses and completed a real-world obstacle course under two conditions: with obstacles enhanced using 3D AR markings and without any enhancement (i.e., passthrough only - control condition). Our results reve

Swimming with a head-mounted display: dual-task costs.

Head-up displays (HUDs) have the potential to change work in operation environments by providing hands-free information to wearers. However, these benefits may be accompanied by trade-offs, primarily by increasing cognitive load due to dividing attention. Previous studies have attempted to understand the trade-offs of HUD usage; however, all of which were focused on land-based tasks. A gap in understanding exists when examining HUD use in aquatic environments as immersion introduces unique environmental and physiological factors that could affect multitasking. In this study, we investigated mu

Evaluating Balance Recovery Techniques for Users Wearing Head-Mounted Display in VR.

Room-scale 3D position tracking enables users to explore a virtual environment by physically walking, which improves comfort and the level of immersion. However, when users walk with their eyesight blocked by a head-mounted display, they may unexpectedly lose their balance and fall if they bump into real-world obstacles or unintentionally shift their center of mass outside the margin of stability. This paper evaluates balance recovery methods and intervention timing during the use of VR with the assumption that the onset of a fall is given. Our experiment followed the tether-release protocol d

Three-dimensional visualization systems for laparoscopic surgery training: a peg transfer exercise study.

OBJECTIVE: Minimally invasive surgery (MIS) offers significant benefits, including short-term recovery and few complications. However, surgeons face challenges, particularly with two-dimensional (2D) visualization systems. Recent advancements in three-dimensional (3D) technologies can enhance depth perception and improve the training process. This study compares three 3D visualization systems in laparoscopic peg transfer training: (1) head-mounted displays, (2) passive 3D glasses, and (3) active 3D glasses. METHODS: A randomized controlled trial was conducted with 24 participants performing a

Early Biological Response to Poly(ε-caprolactone) PCL-Bioactive Glass Composites Obtained by 3D Printing as Bone Substitutes.

The increasing demand for smart bone substitutes has boosted the implementation of biomaterials possibly endowed with both pro-osteogenic and pro-angiogenic capabilities, among which bioactive glasses hold great potential. Hence, two Poly(ε-caprolactone) (PCL)-based composites were loaded at 10 wt.%, with either pristine (SBA3) or copper-doped (SBA3_Cu) silica-based bioactive glasses, through a solvent casting method with chloroform. Neat PCL was used as a control. Samples produced by 3D printing underwent SEM and EDX analyses, and the following were measured: tensile strength and hardness, su

Evaluating subjective cycling safety via 360°Images and HMDs: A comparative study.

INTRODUCTION: Subjective safety is a key determinant of cycling behavior and traffic risk perception, yet it is rarely assessed systematically in infrastructure evaluation. Because perceived safety does not necessarily correspond to objective indicators such as crash statistics or design standards, reliable methods are needed to capture experiential safety dimensions relevant to research and practice. Immersive technologies such as head-mounted displays (HMDs) may provide a controlled, scalable, effort- and resource-efficient addition or even alternative to rarely conducted on-site assessments

Silver modified atraumatic restorative treatment: a paradigm shift in dental caries management.

Silver diamine fluoride (SDF) and atraumatic restorative treatment (ART) are treatment modalities that are minimally invasive and used for the prevention and control of dental caries. The amalgamation of these two techniques has led to the development of silver modified atraumatic restorative treatment (SMART). In this approach the carious lesion is restored with glass-ionomer cement (GIC) after SDF application. SMART effectively arrests caries without removing additional tooth structure, making it a promising option for caries management in children who lack cooperative ability. This article r

Augmented reality head-mounted display at-sea use causes cybersickness.

Nausea and other debilitating symptoms associated with cybersickness continue to pose a significant challenge when using extended reality (xR) head-mounted displays (HMD). This study investigated if augmented reality (AR) HMD at-sea use produced cybersickness. Participants performed an observation task in AR HMD and reported their sickness at six, 5-min intervals. Results from Navy participants at sea were compared to another Navy sample and a general military sample performing the same task on land. This was done to understand if Navy personnel can better tolerate sickness than the general mi
