Swellable and Thermally Responsive Hydrogel/Shape Memory Polymer Foam Composites for Sealing Lung Biopsy Tracts.

Lung tissue biopsies can result in a leakage of blood (hemothorax) and air (pneumothorax) from the biopsy tract, which threatens the patient with a collapsed lung and other complications. We have developed a lung biopsy tract sealant based on a thiol-ene-crosslinked PEG hydrogel and polyurethane shape memory polymer (SMP) foam composite. After insertion into biopsy tracts, the PEG hydrogel component contributes to sealing through water-driven swelling, whereas the SMP foam contributes to sealing via thermal actuation. The gelation kinetics, swelling properties, and rheological properties of va

Polycaprolactone-based shape memory foams as self-fitting vaginal stents.

There is an urgent critical need for a patient-forward vaginal stent that can prevent debilitating vaginal stenosis that occurs after pelvic radiation treatments and vaginal reconstruction. To this end, we developed a self-fitting vaginal stent based on a shape-memory polymer (SMP) foam that can assume a secondary, compressed shape for ease of deployment. Upon insertion, the change in temperature and hydration initiates foam expansion to shape fit to the individual patient and restore the lumen of the stent to allow egress of vaginal secretions. To achieve rapid actuation at physiological temp

A Multi-Objective Approach for Optimal Energy Management in Smart Home Using the Reinforcement Learning.

Maintaining a fair use of energy consumption in smart homes with many household appliances requires sophisticated algorithms working together in real time. Similarly, choosing a proper schedule for appliances operation can be used to reduce inappropriate energy consumption. However, scheduling appliances always depend on the behavior of a smart home user. Thus, modeling human interaction with appliances is needed to design an efficient scheduling algorithm with real-time support. In this regard, we propose a scheduling algorithm based on human appliances interaction in smart homes using reinfo

With the rapid development of the concept of the Internet of Things (IoT), gas sensors with the function of simulating the human sense of smell became irreplaceable as a key element. Among them, ammonia (NH3) sensors played an important role in respiration tests, environmental monitoring, safety, and other fields. However, the fabrication of the high-performance device with high stability and resistance to mechanical damages was still a challenge. In this work, polyurethane (PU) with excellent self-healing ability was applied as the substrate, and the sensor was designed from new sensitive mat

Designing oxide chemiresistors for detecting volatile aromatic compounds: recent progresses and future perspectives.

Oxide chemiresistors have mostly been used to detect reactive gases such as ethanol, acetone, formaldehyde, nitric dioxide, and carbon monoxide. However, the selective and sensitive detection of volatile aromatic compounds such as benzene, toluene, and xylene, which are extremely toxic and harmful, using oxide chemiresistors remains challenging because of the molecular stability of benzene rings containing chemicals. Moreover, the performance of the sensing materials is insufficient to detect trace concentration levels of volatile aromatic compounds, which lead to harmful effects on human bein

An Analysis of a Highly Sensitive and Selective Hydrogen Gas Sensor Based on a 3D Cu-Doped SnO2 Sensing Material by Efficient Electronic Sensor Interface.

In this research, a highly sensitive and selective hydrogen gas sensor was developed based on Cu-doped SnO2. Sensing characteristics were compared based on SnO2 doped with different concentrations of Cu, and the highest sensitivity and fastest response time were shown when 3% Cu was contained. A 3D structure was formed using a polystyrene to increase the surface-to-volume ratio, which allows more oxygen molecules to bond with the surface of the SnO2 sensing material. Extremely increased sensitivity was observed as compared to the planar structure. A temperature sensor and micro-heater were int

Study on the release behaviors of berberine hydrochloride based on sandwich nanostructure and shape memory effect.

Nanofibrous drug delivery systems (DDSs) recently have attracted remarkable interest, especially their potential to program dosage of the encased drug intelligently. Despite this, the exploration of efficient strategy to precisely program drug release from nanofibrous DDS still remains a significant challenge. In this study, we electrospun a near-body temperature (Ttrans ≈ 42 °C) sensitive shape memory polyurethane in three stages through sequential electrospinning technology, and prepared a sort of sandwich structural membrane, comprising of top, inner and bottom layers, wherein a natural ant

Waste-derived and recycled shape-memory polymers and composites: feedstocks, processing, performance, and circularity challenges.

Shape-memory polymers and polymer composites can recover a programmed shape in response to external stimuli and have been investigated for applications including actuators, sensors, adaptive structures, and 4D printing. The majority of well-established systems use virgin petrochemical feedstocks, which has prompted interest in waste-derived and recycled alternatives. This review examines waste-derived and recycled shape-memory polymers and polymer composites prepared from plastic waste, agricultural residues, industrial by-products, e-waste, and waste cooking oil. Feedstocks are distinguished

Aptamer-based photonic crystals enable ultra-trace detection of staphylococcal enterotoxin B without labels.

Staphylococcal enterotoxin B (SEB) is one of the most common serotypes in staphylococcal food-poisoning cases. A rapid, sensitive, and simple method for SEB detection is crucial for public health. A photonic crystal (PC) sensing material for label-free detection of ultra-trace SEB was proposed in this study. Gold nanoparticle-doped silica microspheres were stacked to form an opal PC through self-assembly, and SEB aptamers, as the recognition element, were modified onto the PC. When the target protein of SEB came in contact with the PC sensing material, the reflection peak intensity of PCs decr

4D printing of a multi-transitioning shape memory polymer with a recovery onset towards precision endovascular embolization.

Practical use of shape memory polymers (SMPs) in endovascular embolization is often limited by their reliance on external triggers not easily applicable within the vascular environment. Addressing this, we introduce digital light 4D printing of an SMP that leverages naturally occurring physiological stimuli (body temperature and hydration) to initiate shape transformations. This SMP, termed PGDA-PUA-PAA, is photo-crosslinked from a resin consisting of poly(glycerol dodecanoate acrylate) (PGDA) oligomer, 10-undecenoic acid (UA), and acrylic acid (AA) monomers. It features dual-transition temper

Azobenzene-modified chitosan composites harnessing high-efficiency photosensitive shape memory behaviors.

Chitosan-based shape memory polymers (SMPs) represent a promising class of smart materials for biomedical and packaging applications, yet their development is often limited by the reliance on solutions and thermal stimuli. To enable remote and precise control, this study focuses on developing photosensitive SMPs by conferring light responsiveness to chitosan. Azobenzene-modified chitosan (CSM) was synthesized via a three-step process involving maleic anhydride modification of chitosan followed by free radical grafting with 4-acryloyloxyazobenzene. Composite films (CSMCFs) were then prepared by

Shape memory polymer hydrogels with cell-responsive degradation mechanisms for Crohn's fistula closure.

Crohn's disease, a form of inflammatory bowel disease, commonly results in fistulas, tunneling wounds between portions of the urinary, reproductive, and/or digestive systems. These tunneling wounds cause pain, infection, and abscess formation. Of Crohn's patients with fistula formation, 83% undergo surgical intervention to either drain or bypass the fistula openings, and ~23% of these patients ultimately require bowel resections. Current treatment options, such as setons, fibrin glues, and bioprosthetic plugs, are prone to infection, dislodging, and/or require a secondary removal surgery. Thus

Stress-Free Two-Way Shape Memory Polymers with Dual-Crystalline Phase Based on Poly(Tetramethylene Ether Glycol) and Poly(ε-Caprolactone).

Two-way shape memory polymers (2W-SMPs) are a class of smart materials and can undergo spontaneously reversible deformation after specific stimuli. It is crucial to develop 2W-SMPs to achieve precise control of two-way shape memory behavior without external forces and reveal their structure-property relationships. In this study, dual-crystalline phase crosslinked polymer networks based on poly(tetramethylene ether glycol) (PTMEG) and poly(ε-caprolactone) (PCL) are fabricated via thiol-ene click reactions. The networks with two independent melting temperatures are gained by adjusting the ratio

Fabrication of Shape Memory Polymer Endovascular Thrombectomy Device for Treating Ischemic Stroke.

Stroke is the second result for death and ischemic stroke constitutes most of all stroke cases. Ischemic stroke takes place when blood clot or embolus blocks cerebral vessel and interrupts blood flow, which often leads to brain damage, permanent disability, or death. There is a 4.5-h (golden hour) treatment window to restore blood flow prior to permanent neurological impairment results. Current stroke treatments consist mechanical system or thrombolytic drug therapy to disrupt or dissolve thrombus. Promising method for stroke treatment is mechanical retrieving of thrombi employing device deplo

Shape Memory Alloy-Based Soft Finger with Changeable Bending Length Using Targeted Variable Stiffness.

This work described a bioinspired soft robotic finger with variable bending length to conform objects with different sizes by means of selectively varying the structural stiffness of its segments. The basic design is a shape memory alloy-based soft actuator with embedded stiffness-varying structures serving as modifiable endoskeletons. The stiffness-varying structure is composed of shape memory polymer (SMP) embedded with Nichrome (Ni-Cr) wires as heating elements. Joule heating of SMP through Ni-Cr wire inducing its phase change from the glassy state to the rubbery state enables the actuator
