Ultrastructure of the external sensory apparatus of Gyrodactylus gasterostei Gläser, 1974.

The aim of this study, therefore, was to investigate the ultrastructure of gyrodactylid sensilla and to ascertain how these may be employed in the colonisation of new hosts using the Gyrodactylus gasterostei Gläser, 1974--Gasterosteus aculeatus L. model. As Gyrodactylus has no specific transmission stage in its life-cycle, movement between hosts must be achieved by strategies employed by the adult. This study suggests that certain sensilla, presented for the first time in Gyrodactylus gasterostei, may serve as chemoreceptors and mechanoreceptors and possible photoreceptors. The results of this

The effect of diet on ontogenic development of the digestive tract in juvenile reared long snout seahorse Hippocampus guttulatus.

Ontogenetic development of the digestive tract and associated organs in long snout seahorse Hippocampus guttulatus juveniles was morphologically and histologically examined from the time of release from the male's pouch until 72 h after the first meal. When released from the male's pouch, juvenile seahorses are small adult replicates. This means that unlike other teleost fish larvae, the first developmental phase has already taken place, and juveniles are morphologically prepared and able to feed on live prey immediately following parturition. At this stage, the buccopharynx, oesophagus, and i

Proteomic Differences Reveal Early Development of Contrasting Energetic Strategies Between Divergent Migratory Ecotypes in Three-Spined Stickleback.

Divergence in migratory behaviour represents a striking and common axis of life-history variation in animals. Plastic changes in adult animals in preparation for migration are well known, but the differences in early development between migratory and non-migratory forms are not well documented. These differences might contribute to reproductive isolation because of the potentially substantial divergence in metabolism and physiology. Here we document substantial differences between migratory ecotypes in sarcomeric development and energetic pathways from immediately after hatching. On North Uist

A proposed mechanism of ammonia excretion in the seahorse brood pouch revealed by rhesus glycoprotein localization.

In seahorses (family Syngnathidae), the male brood pouch provides a protected environment for developing embryos. During pregnancy, embryos develop within an enclosed brood pouch, requiring a physiological mechanism to eliminate the nitrogenous waste excreted by the embryos. This study investigated the expression and localization of rhesus (Rh) glycoproteins, expected to function as ammonia transporters, in the brood pouch of the pot-bellied seahorse Hippocampus abdominalis. The expression of the RhAG, RhBG, and RhCG2 genes in the pouch was confirmed by reverse transcription-polymerase chain r

Excretory-secretory products from the parasite Schistocephalus solidus modulate threespine stickleback splenocytes.

Helminths can modulate the immune systems of their hosts through the release of soluble molecules known as excretory-secretory products (ESPs). To better understand the extent and mechanisms behind helminth-mediated immunosuppression, we used an emerging model of immunoparasitology, threespine stickleback, Gasterosteus aculeatus, and its tapeworm parasite Schistocephalus solidus. We examined the impacts of exposure to ESPs of S. solidus (SsESPs) originating from Canadian lakes on the viability of threespine stickleback splenocytes in vitro. We found that exposure to SsESPs from Gosling Lake si

Maternal effect senescence via reduced DNA repair ability in the three-spined stickleback.

Maternal effect senescence, a decline in offspring viability with maternal age, has been documented across diverse animals, but its mechanisms remain largely unknown. Here, we test maternal effect senescence and explore its possible molecular mechanisms in a fish. We compared the levels of maternal mRNA transcripts of DNA repair genes and mtDNA copies in eggs and the levels of DNA damage in somatic and germline tissues between young and old female sticklebacks. We also tested, in an in vitro fertilization experiment, whether maternal age and sperm DNA damage level interactively influence the e

Less impact than suspected: Dietary exposure of three-spined sticklebacks to microplastic fibers does not affect their body condition and immune parameters.

Microplastic fibers are frequent anthropogenic contaminants in most aquatic environments and have consequently been detected in the digestive tract of many fish species. Upon ingestion, microplastic fibers pose risks of interference with nutrient uptake, impaired intestinal health, and as a consequence may alter growth performance and fitness. In addition, foreign particles such as fibers might cause tissue irritations and stress, and thus interfere with immune parameters. In nature, fish regularly encounter microplastic fibers as well as fiber debris from natural sources and materials. Thus,

Zone of Interaction Between the Parasite and the Host: Protein Profile of the Body Cavity Fluid of Gasterosteus aculeatus L. Infected with the Cestode Schistocephalus solidus (Muller, 1776).

PURPOSE: During infection, the host and the parasite "communicate" with each other through various molecules, including proteins. The aim of this study was to describe the excretory-secretory proteins from the helminth Schistocephalus solidus and its intermediate host, the three-spined stickleback Gasterosteus aculeatus L., which are likely to be involved in interactions between them. METHODS: Combined samples of washes from the G. aculeatus sticklebacks cavity infected with the S. solidus, and washes from the parasite surface were used as experimental samples, while washes from the uninfecte

The Three-spined Stickleback, Gasterosteus aculeatus Linnaeus 1758, plays a minor role as a host of Lepeophtheirus salmonis (Krøyer 1837) in the Gulf of Maine.

The sea louse, Lepeophtheirus salmonis (Krøyer 1837), is a significant parasite of farmed salmon throughout the Northern Hemisphere. Management of on-farm louse populations can be improved by understanding the role that wild fish play in sustaining and providing refuge for the local population of sea lice. In this study, 1,064 sticklebacks were captured. Of these animals, 176 individuals were carrying a total of 238 sea lice, yielding a prevalence and intensity of 16.5% and 1.4 lice per fish, respectively. Detailed examination of the sea lice on the three-spined sticklebacks captured in Cobsco

Enhanced ambient UVB radiation affects post-mating, but not pre-mating sexual traits in a fish.

Organisms inhabiting shallow aquatic habitats currently experience increasing levels of solar ultraviolet B radiation (UVB). UVB causes damage on cellular and molecular levels and can affect associated life-history traits either through direct exposure or indirectly through oxidative stress generation. We examined UVB effects on pre- and post-mating sexual traits in three-spined stickleback fish (Gasterosteus aculeatus). Adult, reproductively non-active males were assigned to two exposure treatments under semi-natural conditions in an outdoor experiment; one group received natural radiation (U

A New Species of Ligophorus (Monogenea: Dactylogyridae) from the gills of the Flathead Mullet Mugil cephalus (Teleostei: Mugilidae) from Mexico.

A new monogenean species, Ligophorus yucatanensis n. sp. from the gills of the flathead mullet Mugil cephalus from the Yucatan Peninsula, Mexico, is described. The new species can be differentiated from all other species of Ligophorus by the morphology of the accessory piece of the copulatory organ. Its main lobe is cylindrical, tunnelled expanded distally, slightly bowed with a characteristic membranous opening at level of medial bifurcation of the accessory piece, forming a thick-walled bulbshaped expansion that ends in a round labium. The secondary lobe is spatulate, straight, and shorter t

Genomic landscape underlying pituitary epigenome divergence between stickleback ecotypes.

The diversification of epigenetic regulation, including chromatin accessibility, is crucial for adaptation to diverse environments. Chromatin regulation in endocrine organs, such as the pituitary gland, plays a critical role in controlling various physiological processes underlying life-history traits, including growth, metabolism and reproduction. To understand the genetic architecture responsible for epigenomic divergence, we investigated chromatin accessibility in the pituitary gland using a parapatric pair of marine and stream ecotypes of the three-spined stickleback (Gasterosteus aculeatu

Dietary Azolla meal enhances growth, immune status, and liver health in thin-lip grey mullet (Liza ramada) fingerlings: a sustainable approach to Aquafeed optimization.

This study assessed the nutritional, immunological, and hepatic impacts of dietary Azolla meal (Azolla pinnata) as a sustainable alternative to conventional plant-based feed ingredients in Liza ramada (thin-lip grey mullet) aquaculture. Fingerlings were fed isonitrogenous and isocaloric diets where Azolla meal progressively replaced soybean meal and yellow corn at inclusion levels of 0%, 5%, 10%, 15%, and 20% over a 10-week period. Results revealed that the 10% inclusion level optimally enhanced growth performance (final body weight, weight gain), feed conversion ratio (1.78), and protein effi

Genetic diversity of Toll-like receptor 9 in swamp eels (Monopterus albus).

The swamp eel, Monopterus albus, is an important aquaculture species in Asia (mainly China) whose production has seriously suffered from infectious diseases. In spite of the critical requirement for aquaculture practices, to date there is scant information on its immune defence. Here, the genetic characteristics of Toll-like receptor 9 (TLR9), which plays crucial roles in the initiation of host defence against microbial invasion, were analysed. It exhibits a striking lack of genetic variation resulting from a recent demographic bottleneck. A comparison with the homologue of M. javanensis revea

Otolith shape and elemental signatures provide insights into the connectivity of euryhaline Chelon labrosus inhabiting two close estuaries with different burdens of xenoestrogens in the Southern Bay of Biscay.

Intersex gonads have been observed in thicklip grey mullet Chelon labrosus, inhabiting estuaries with high burdens of xenoestrogens in the Southeast Bay of Biscay, but knowledge of population connectivity among estuaries is lacking for this euryhaline fish species. This study investigates the population structure of C. labrosus using otolith shape and elemental signatures of 60 adults (overall length ∼ 38 cm) from two estuaries 21 nautic miles apart, one with a high incidence of intersex condition (Gernika), and the other one pristine (Plentzia). Otolith shape analyses were performed using ell

The timing and development of infections in a fish-cestode host-parasite system.

The cestode Schistocephalus solidus is a common parasite in freshwater threespine stickleback populations, imposing strong fitness costs on their hosts. Given this, it is surprising how little is known about the timing and development of infections in natural stickleback populations. Previous work showed that young-of-year stickleback can get infected shortly after hatching. We extended this observation by comparing infection prevalence of young-of-year stickleback from 3 Alaskan populations (Walby, Cornelius and Wolf lakes) over 2 successive cohorts (2018/19 and 2019/20). We observed strong v

Cross-continental experimental infections reveal distinct defence mechanisms in populations of the three-spined stickleback Gasterosteus aculeatus.

Epidemiological traits of host-parasite associations depend on the effects of the host, the parasite and their interaction. Parasites evolve mechanisms to infect and exploit their hosts, whereas hosts evolve mechanisms to prevent infection and limit detrimental effects. The reasons why and how these traits differ across populations still remain unclear. Using experimental cross-infection of three-spined stickleback Gasterosteus aculeatus and their species-specific cestode parasites Schistocephalus solidus from Alaskan and European populations, we disentangled host, parasite and interaction eff
