Plasminogen activator system in smokers and non-smokers with and without periodontal disease.

BACKGROUND: The present study assessed levels of plasminogen activator (PA) system proteins in gingival crevicular fluid (GCF) and serum of chronic gingivitis, chronic periodontitis patients and periodontally healthy subjects and evaluated how smoking influenced these levels. METHODS: Twenty chronic gingivitis; 20 chronic periodontitis patients and 20 periodontally healthy volunteers were consecutively recruited according to the inclusion criteria so that exactly half of the subjects in each category were smokers. GCF samples from four sites together with serum samples were obtained from each

[Smokers and psychiatric comorbidities].

The prevalence of smoking in patients with psychiatric disorders is higher than the prevalence of smoking in general population. Smokers with psychiatric disorders are at a greater risk for medical morbidity and mortality, including chronic obstructive pulmonary disease, cardiovascular disease, and cancers, compared to those in the general population. Their life expectancies are considerably reduced (25years). Tobacco-related illnesses are the leading cause of death in patients with psychiatric disorders. Smokers with psychiatric disorders report more severe withdrawal symptoms than those with

Reducing risk in smokers.

PURPOSE OF REVIEW: Tobacco smoking is a leading cause of lung cancer and chronic obstructive pulmonary disease. For smokers who want to quit, nicotine replacement therapy and bupropion are frequently recommended. Currently, disagreement surrounds the extent of risk reduction from quitting, the consequences of the change of nicotine replacement therapy to over-the-counter status, and the safety and efficacy of new tobacco products being marketed by tobacco companies. This article reviews the current evidence relevant to these and other developments in smoking interventions and describes the mos

Smokers--vitamin C--hypercholesterolaemia.

Cigarette smoking is one of the major public health problems of our times. Smokers are damaged by free radicals formed during smoking. The antioxidant capacity of smokers is reduced. Vitamin C (ascorbic acid) deficiency in heavy smokers with a total cholesterol more than 6.7 mmol/l ranges from 35-55%. It is mediated by smoking, by its low dietary intake by preferential high dietary intake of saturated and unsaturated fats. Vitamin C is an important water soluble antioxidant, therefore its intake can at least partially reduce the unfavourable effect of smoking caused by the attack of free radic

[Pneumothorax in cigarette smokers].

From 1.01.1992 to 31.12.1998 ill prisoners were treated because of so called spontaneous pneumothorax. Their age was between 24 to 57, which was 33 in average. All of them were males and heavy smokers. In one case of the coat pneumothorax the treatment was limited only to the breathing exercises, to ten other patients an under-water-seal drainage was applied, in the next case with pneumothorax and clear symptoms of bronchial fistula, the lung expansion was obtained no sooner than after the usage of a suction drainage. The risk of recurrence of the illness was limited by injection of 40% glucos

Periodontal Disease in Smokers.

BACKGROUND: A number of published studies demonstrated that smoking represents an increased risk for the development and progression of periodontal disease. Smoking affects the microbiota composition, immune response, and the healing capacity of the periodontium. The aim of this study is to determine the status of periodontal disease in smokers and have an overview about the need for smoking cessation and awareness programs to provide better periodontal health. METHODS: A cross-sectional observational study was carried out on 231 patients visiting the dental OPD of Bir Hospital who were smoke

Psychological Features of Smokers.

BACKGROUND: Smoking tobacco is believed to be common among patients with psychiatric disorders like anxiety, depression, schizophrenia, and affective disorders. The aim of this study was to investigate the psychological symptoms of people without known psychiatric diseases who have freely decided to quit smoking. METHODS: A cross-sectional study was designed, and 124 healthy active-smokers (66 female) and 127 healthy non-smokers (61 female) were recruited. The symptom check list and Fagerström Test for Nicotine Dependence (FTND) were used to assess psychological symptoms and nicotine addictio

[Pulmonary tuberculosis in smokers].

INTRODUCTION: Tobacco smoking and tuberculosis (TB) are two major public health problems, and the former may affect the morbidity and mortality rates for the latter. This study sought to compare the clinical and radiologic aspects of pulmonary TB, as well as outcome, in smokers and nonsmokers. METHODS: This retrospective case control study examined the files of 90 patients in our pulmonary department with active pulmonary TB, 45 of them smokers and 45, nonsmokers. To analyze the seriousness of the radiologic lesions, we used a score based on the International Labour Organization classificatio

Airway and Pulmonary β2-Adrenergic Vasodilatory Function in Current Smokers and Never Smokers.

BACKGROUND: Cigarette smoking has been associated with diminished vasodilatory function in the airway circulation. It is possible that cigarette smoking similarly affects the pulmonary circulation before resting pulmonary circulatory abnormalities become manifested. The aim of this study was to compare the acute effect of inhaled albuterol on airway and pulmonary hemodynamic function as an index of β2-adrenoceptor-mediated vasodilation in smokers and never smokers. METHODS: In 30 adults, airway and pulmonary vascular function was assessed before and 15 min after albuterol inhalation (270 μg).

Characteristics of HIV-positive cigarette smokers: a sample of smokers facing multiple challenges.

HIV-positive populations have high smoking rates and smoking puts HIV-positive individuals at higher risk for HIV-related health problems. Little information is available on the characteristics of HIV-positive smokers. The present study examines the baseline psychosocial characteristics of 184 HIV-positive cigarette smokers enrolled in a smoking cessation clinical trial. The sample was 82% male, and 53% Caucasian. Over half were unemployed and 43.8% reported an income of less than $10,000. Mean cigarettes per day was 19.2 and the mean Fagerström Test Nicotine Dependence score was 4.8. The majo

Isocapnic hyperventilation with cold air in healthy non-smokers, smokers and asthmatic subjects.

Isocapnic hyperventilation with subfreezing air was performed by 15 healthy non-smokers, 10 asymptomatic smokers and 9 asthmatics. All subjects had normal ventilatory function and airway resistance (Raw) before challenge. The hyperventilation was performed twice. In one session, total respiratory resistance (Rrs) and reactance (Xrs) were measured at various frequencies, using a forced oscillation technique; in another session, vital capacity (VC), forced expiratory volume in 1 s (FEV1), maximal expiratory flow rates (FEF) and Raw were determined. In non-smokers, no changes in FEV1, FEF nor Raw

Smokers Show Lower Levels of Psychological Well-Being and Mindfulness than Non-Smokers.

Mindfulness is defined as "paying attention in a particular way, on purpose, in the present moment, and nonjudgmentally". Mindfulness is associated with positive affect, life satisfaction, self-esteem, lower negative affect and rumination. Conversely, evidence suggests a relationship between nicotine dependence and psychiatric disorders. This study aimed to compare the levels of Mindfulness and Subjective Well-Being (SWB) between smokers and non-smokers. Ninety seven smokers and eighty four non-smokers participated in the study (n = 181). The Five Facet Mindfulness Questionnaire (FFMQ-BR) and

A comparative histopathological study of vocal fold polyps in smokers versus non-smokers.

BACKGROUND: A large proportion of patients with vocal fold polyps are cigarette smokers. However, prior to this report no comparative study of polyp histopathology in smokers versus non-smokers had been performed. METHODS: A prospective histopathological study of vocal fold polyps excised from 29 patients was undertaken. This comprised a comparative analysis of polyp histopathology in smokers versus non-smokers and a review of the pertinent literature. RESULTS: Vocal fold polyps were larger in smokers than in non-smokers. Histopathological features significantly associated with the polyps of

A comparative study of salivary biomarkers for periodontal disease among smokers and non-smokers.

There is a need to understand how smoking alters salivary biomarkers and periodontal disease severity. Therefore, it is of interest to evaluate salivary biomarkers in smokers and non-smokers with chronic periodontitis. Hence, a cross-sectional design included 100 subjects, with clinical parameters and salivary biomarkers analyzed using ELISA and SPSS. Smokers showed significantly higher periodontal parameters and elevated inflammatory and oxidative stress markers, with reduced antioxidant levels. Thus, we show salivary biomarkers as reliable non-invasive indicators for monitoring periodontal d
