Problems experienced during quitting smoking, particularly withdrawal symptoms, make giving up difficult. In this study the description of the complaints arising in individuals quitting smoking thus acts as a guide for health professional who dealt with smoking cessation. Data belonging to 194 patients applying to the smoking cessation clinic and quitting smoking were analysed. Behavioural counselling and nicotine support therapy are administered in the smoking cessation programme. Patients are followed up for at least two years after quitting cigarettes, and their complaints are determined. O

Smoking, the most prominent nongenetic factor contributing to mortality, remains the major public health problem throughout the world. There are nearly 1.1 billion users of nicotine and tobacco products worldwide while approximately one third to half of them will die from smoking-related disease. The habit of smoking is mainly propelled by nicotine, a strongly addictive substance, to which the vast majority of smokers fall victim. Except for the general and specific support and counseling strategies there are now effective treatments for nicotine addiction. Two types of pharmacological therapi

Cigarette smoking is the single most important preventable cause of death and illness. Smoking cessation is associated with substantial health benefits. Weight gain is cited as a primary reason for not trying to quit smoking. There is a great variability in the amount of weight gain but younger ages, lower socio-economic status and heavier smoking are predictors of higher weight gain. Weight change after smoking cessation appears to be influenced by underlying genetic factors. Besides, weight gain after smoking cessation is largely because of increased body fat and some studies suggest that it

There is a wealth of opportunities for nurses to facilitate smoking cessation with their patients. Nurses have shown to have a modest but positive effect on cessation rates when they deliver brief or intensive counseling. Because nurses work in a multitude of clinical settings, they can impact both prevention and treatment of nicotine addiction associated with cigarette use. More nurses need to be educated about their role in reducing the morbidity and mortality of tobacco-related diseases.

BACKGROUND: Health care professionals frequently advise patients to improve their health by stopping smoking. Such advice may be brief, or part of more intensive interventions.
OBJECTIVES: The aims of this review were to assess the effectiveness of advice from physicians in promoting smoking cessation; to compare minimal interventions by physicians with more intensive interventions; to assess the effectiveness of various aids to advice in promoting smoking cessation and to determine the effect of anti-smoking advice on disease specific and all cause mortality.

In May 1995 73% of a random sample of 1000 Danish general practitioners (GPs) participated in a survey by anonymously filling in a mailed questionnaire concerning their smoking counselling practice and attitudes to smoking prevention. Among the participating GPs, there were 65% who every week had contact with one or more patients, who wished to quit smoking. Earlier smoking cessation practices such as giving information about the health consequences of smoking were often used. However, few GPs' advice included helping patients set quit dates or making follow-up appointments and most GPs did no

There can be no question that smoking is a modern version of plague; that, as Camus points out, the public does not comprehend its true nature. As in the metaphorical community in Camus' narrative, the struggle of individuals against the pestilence (including official obstruction) is imperative. Physicians have multiple opportunities to join the war against tobacco. This article has shown how one may help individual patients in smoking cessation or interruption of its initiation and has suggested other activities by which physicians can become health promotion specialists. By assisting in the

Smoking increases mortality from all causes and has a crucial role in atherosclerotic cardiovascular disease (ASCVD). Active smoking and secondhand smoke exposure determine more than 30% of coronary heart disease (CHD) mortality. The exact mechanisms of cardiovascular damages are not well known, but the detrimental effect of smoking on endothelial function has long been recognized. Smoking elicits oxidative processes, negatively affects platelet function, fibrinolysis, inflammation and vasomotor function; all these proatherogenic effects double the 10-year risk of fatal events in smokers compa

INTRODUCTION: Some studies show that truck drivers use tobacco and other stimulants to stay awake as they drive. Despite their increased risks for many of tobacco-related health disparities, there is limited engagement of truck drivers in smoking cessation programs. The objective of this study was to describe smoking characteristics and identify their preferred smoking cessation methods among truck drivers.
METHODS: This was a cross-sectional mixed methods study. Participants were truck drivers recruited at trucking companies in Utah in 2019. Participants were either individually interviewed

INTRODUCTION: The identification of individual characteristics that predict success in smoking cessation is necessary to improve the effectiveness of smoking cessation efforts. The aim of this study was to identify the factors that predict success in smoking cessation in people who attended 2, 3, 4, or 5 sessions of a smoking cessation program.
METHODS: The participants comprised 2,471 people who attended at least 2 consultations during a 5-week smoking cessation program. Success in smoking cessation was defined as self-reported abstinence and having an exhaled carbon monoxide level ≤10 parts

The prevalence of smoking among young adults aged 19-28 years old in the United States persists at rates of 14.3%. Young adults underutilize pharmacotherapy for smoking cessation, and the use of e-cigarettes has increased. We analyzed comments from online smoking-cessation support groups to understand young-adult smokers' views of pharmacotherapy and e-cigarettes, to provide a more in-depth insight into the underutilization of pharmacotherapy. A qualitative analysis was performed on comments about pharmacotherapy and e-cigarettes from participants enrolled in online smoking-cessation support g

QUESTION: An adolescent who smokes regularly came to my clinic for help quitting. While I am aware that bupropion is a first-line medication for smoking cessation among adults, is it effective and safe for adolescents?
ANSWER: Most adolescent smokers in Canada would like to quit, but more than 90% of the attempts are unsuccessful. Bupropion appears to be more effective than other pharmacologic options in improving abstinence among adolescents who smoke in the short term; however, it is not approved by Health Canada for those younger than 18 years. Bupropion has not been associated with an inc

Since they have very good opportunities to aid smokers in quitting smoking at clinics or pharmacies, pharmacists play an important role in encouraging smoking cessation. They should be aware of the significance of tobacco abstinence. Therapeutic assistance for cessation includes drug treatment of nicotine dependence and counseling based on behavioral science for psychological dependence. Particularly in drug treatment, pharmacists are able to exercise their professional knowledge by assisting smoking cessation from a pharmaceutical viewpoint. It is possible for any pharmacist to provide a brie

Tobacco dependence is a common comorbidity in patients with COPD (Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease) that negatively affects the course of the disease. However, clinically relevant improvement in COPD can only be achieved by complete and permanent abstinence. Therefore, abstinence from tobacco use is a central therapeutic concept in smoking patients with COPD and requires specific and targeted treatment. After detailed documentation of smoking behaviour and motivational counseling outlining the risks of smoking, all such patients shall be offered a structured therapy for tobacco cessation.

Cigarette smoking is the leading cause of chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) worldwide. Smoking cessation is thus integral to the treatment of COPD. Nicotine addiction is a disease dependent on the complex interactions of neurotransmitter pathways, conditioned behaviors, environmental cues, genetic predisposition, and personal life circumstances, which render some more susceptible to tobacco abuse than others. The most successful smoking cessation programs are individualized, comprehensive, and utilize combinations of clinician counseling, behavioral reinforcement, community resource

PURPOSE OF REVIEW: Smoking cessation is the single most efficacious intervention to reduce and prevent smoking-associated morbidity and mortality. This review presents an updated summary of current treatment options. Resources available for management of smoking cessation efforts and variables that may guide treatment of subgroups of patients have also been highlighted.
RECENT FINDINGS: The US Department of Health and Human Services released updated guidelines for treatment of smoking cessation in 2008. Recent meta-analyses have reviewed the newly Food and Drug Administration approved drug, v

IMPORTANCE: Significant evidence gaps exist regarding the safety of smoking cessation pharmacotherapies during pregnancy, especially for the risk of congenital malformations. Consequently, professional bodies advise against the use of varenicline and bupropion and recommend caution with nicotine replacement therapy (NRT). Contemporary estimates of the use of smoking cessation pharmacotherapies during pregnancy are lacking.
OBJECTIVE: To quantify the proportion of individuals using prescribed smoking cessation pharmacotherapies during pregnancy and during the first trimester specifically, in 4

BACKGROUND: There is a common perception that smoking generally helps people to manage stress, and may be a form of 'self-medication' in people with mental health conditions. However, there are biologically plausible reasons why smoking may worsen mental health through neuroadaptations arising from chronic smoking, leading to frequent nicotine withdrawal symptoms (e.g. anxiety, depression, irritability), in which case smoking cessation may help to improve rather than worsen mental health.
OBJECTIVES: To examine the association between tobacco smoking cessation and change in mental health.
