Aachen smoking cessation and harm reduction (ASCHR) trial study protocol - scientific evaluation of a psychological-telemedical counseling concept for smoking cessation in patients with vascular diseases.

BACKGROUND: Smoking is a major risk factor of cardiovascular diseases, notably peripheral arterial disease (PAD). Despite this link, research on smoking cessation interventions in PAD patients remains scarce and inconclusive regarding the efficacy of such interventions. Therefore, elucidating it is crucial and should address both individuals who smoke that are motivated to quit and individuals who smoke heavily lacking the motivation to quit. METHODS/DESIGN: The Aachen Smoking Cessation and Harm Reduction (ASCHR) trial is a prospective randomized controlled study (RCT) on the benefits of tele

Sustained reduction of attentional bias to smoking cues by smartphone-delivered attentional bias modification training for smokers.

OBJECTIVE: Cigarette smoking is thought to be at least partially maintained by the attentional bias (AB) toward smoking cues that develops as a consequence of drug dependence. This study evaluated the impact of smartphone-delivered, in-home attentional bias modification (ABM) to reduce AB to smoking cues and to reduce smoking behavior and withdrawal-related symptoms when used as an adjunct to conventional smoking cessation treatment. METHOD: Participants (N = 246) were treatment-seeking smokers who completed up to 13 days of either ABM designed to train attention away from smoking cues, using

Reduction in cadmium exposure in the United States population, 1988-2008: the contribution of declining smoking rates.

BACKGROUND: Public health policies such as tobacco control, air pollution reduction, and hazardous waste remediation may have reduced cadmium exposure among U.S. adults. However, trends in urine cadmium, a marker of cumulative cadmium exposure, have not been evaluated. OBJECTIVES: We estimated the trends in urine cadmium concentrations in U.S. adults using data from the National Health and Nutrition Examination Surveys (NHANES) from 1988 to 2008. We also evaluated the impact of changes in the distribution of available cadmium determinants (age, sex, race, education, body mass index, smoking,

Reduction of nitrosamines in cigarette smoke vapors through a filter functionalized with polyphenols from olive tree.

OBJECTIVE: In our study, we present the development of a novel cigarette filter enriched with polyphenols, with a particular focus on hydroxytyrosol extracted from olive sources. Our objective was to trap the presence of carcinogens in cigarette smoke by chemically modifying the filter surface. MATERIALS AND METHODS: To evaluate the filtration efficiency of the newly developed filter, we employed an automated Stain Pattern technique, enabling non-intrusive measurement of behavioral vent blocking. The surface modification of cigarette filters was meticulously carried out to target the reductio

Covalent grafting diazotized black phosphorus with ferrocene oligomer towards smoke suppression and toxicity reduction.

In comparison with the thermal hazard of polymers, noxious smoke and gas produced by the combustion of polymers make the environment self-purification a huge challenge. As a new type of a highly effective flame retardant, black phosphorus (BP) can effectively decrease the thermal hazard of polymers, but its performances in smoke suppression and toxicity reduction are unsatisfactory. In this article, a method of covalently grafting diazotized BP with a ferrocene oligomer was applied to promote the smoke suppression and toxicity reduction efficiency of BP. In our work, the BP-NH nanomaterials wi

Switching Away From Smoking and Reduction in Cigarette Consumption Among U.S. Adult Purchasers of the JUUL System Across 24 Months Including Diverse Subpopulations Disproportionately Affected by Cigarette Smoking.

INTRODUCTION: Electronic nicotine-delivery systems (ENDS) can reduce tobacco-related health risks for adults who smoke cigarettes (AWS) by facilitating complete switching away from cigarettes. However, little is known about ENDS use and switching among subpopulations that have been disproportionately affected by smoking. AIMS AND METHODS: AWS (age ≥ 21 years) were recruited following their first purchase of a JUUL Starter Kit in 2018. Participants who self-reported switching (no past-30-day cigarette smoking) at 1-, 2-, 3-, 6-, 9-, 12-, 15-, 18-, 21-, and 24-month follow-ups. Percent switched

Smoking Cessation in Primary Care: A Narrative Review of Evidence-Based Treatment, Emerging Technology, and Harm Reduction Approaches.

Conventional cigarette smoking remains a leading preventable cause of morbidity and mortality despite declining prevalence, yet evidence-based treatments remain underused. This narrative review examines guideline-supported therapies and emerging approaches, including digital tools, neuromodulation, and harm-reduction strategies. Standard care typically combines FDA-approved pharmacotherapy with behavioral counseling. Digital interventions can extend access and support adherence, particularly when integrated with pharmacotherapy and follow-up. Repetitive transcranial magnetic stimulation (rTMS)

Smoking cessation and harm reduction in type 2 diabetes: development of practical recommendations from the DiaSmokeFree Working Group.

Smoking is a major modifiable risk factor in type 2 diabetes (T2D), yet cessation support remains inconsistently integrated into diabetes care. Clinicians face diabetes-specific barriers, including concerns about weight gain, glycemic variability, polypharmacy, limited consultation time, and lack of practical, tailored guidance. To address this gap, the Center of Excellence for the Acceleration of Harm Reduction (CoEHAR), University of Catania, convened the DiaSmokeFree Working Group, an international multidisciplinary panel of 35 experts from 13 countries. The group used a structured, multi-s

A Fire Incident Case at a Radiodiagnostic Center of a Tertiary Care Hospital: Methods for Reduction in Fatality by Smoke Evacuation.

For the general public, healthcare facilities are always a safe and secure place for treatment. Generally, healthcare institutions are equipped to deal with exterior interruptions, but circumstances brought on by internal risks are more serious and frequently require an emergency evacuation of the facility. An incident happened at the radiodiagnostic setup of a tertiary care institute in North India. This fire incident created panic among staff and patients. At the place of casualty, there were around 150 persons, including staff, patients, and their attendants. Immediately after the confirmat

Impact of nicotine reduction in cigarettes on smoking behavior and exposure: Are there differences by race/ethnicity, educational attainment, or gender?

BACKGROUND: Lowering nicotine in cigarettes may reduce smoking prevalences; however, it is not known whether an immediate or gradual reduction in nicotine is the optimal approach for all population groups. OBJECTIVES: We examined whether the optimal approach to nicotine reduction depended on the education, gender, or race of people who smoke and whether the optimal approach differentially benefited people who smoke based on their education, gender, or race. METHODS: Secondary analysis was conducted on a randomized clinical trial (N = 1250) comparing (1) immediate reduction from 15.5 to 0.4 m

Reduction of the elastase inhibitory capacity of alpha 1-antitrypsin by peroxides in cigarette smoke: an analysis of brands and filters.

A procedure for measuring the oxidant content of aqueous condensates of tobacco cigarette smoke is described. The procedure was used in conjunction with analysis of the ability of the smoke solutions to inactivate the elastase inhibitory capacity (EIC) of alpha 1-antitrypsin. The ability of the smoke of a brand to inactivate alpha 1-antitrypsin correlates well with the known tar and nicotine and with the amount of oxidants as measured using o-dianisidine. Filters were found to remove about 73% of the oxidants from smoke. Smoke from a commercial nontobacco cigarette was also found to contain a
