Molecular phylogenetics of Triculine snails (Gastropoda: Pomatiopsidae) from southern China.

Triculine (Gastropoda: Rissooidea: Pomatiopsidae) snails are involved in the transmission of schistosomiasis and paragonimiasis; their distributions are mainly across southeastern Asia and southern China. In the present investigation, partial sequences of COI, 16S, and 28S were examined to infer the phylogenetic relationships among the species rich and poorly understood gastropod. Samples were collected from 12 geographic locations in six provinces of southern China. Several methods such as maximum parsimony, maximum likelihood and distance analysis were used in phylogenetic analyses among the

Update of fasciolosis-transmitting snails in Egypt (review and comment).

Several snail species may contribute in transmission of fasciolosis in Egypt. These molluscs show a variable sensibility to natural infections with Fasciola species. Radix natalensis is considered to be the essential intermediate host for F. gigantica based on field and experimental studies. Cercarial production from R. natalensis experimentally infected with F. gigantica is affected by the species of definitive host from which the eggs are obtained, as well as the different laboratory conditions. Another lymnaeid, Galba truncatula, may play a role in transmitting this parasite in Egypt, as it

Susceptibility of Ethiopian bulinid snails to Schistosoma haematobium from Somalia.

Susceptibility of four Ethiopian bulinid snails to a Somalian strain of S. haematobium was tested. Bulinus abyssinicus was highly susceptible and lowland B. africanus was partially susceptible while B. truncatus and B. forskalii were refractory to the parasite. It is suggested that Ethiopian refugees returning from Somalia and/or Somalian refugees entering Ethiopia should be screened and treated for S. haematobium before they are allowed to work/resettle in development areas where B. abyssinicus and B. africanus are known or ecologically suspected to occur.

DNA probes for the detection of Fasciola hepatica in snails.

Fasciola hepatica, also called the large liver fluke, is a trematode which can infect most mammals. Monitoring the infection rate of snails, which function as intermediate hosts and harbour larval stages of F. hepatica, is an important component of epidemiological studies on fascioliasis. For this purpose, DNA probes were generated which can be used for the detection of F. hepatica larvae in snails. Four highly repetitive DNA fragments were cloned in a plasmid vector and tested by Southern blot hybridization to the DNA of various trematodes for specificity and sensitivity. The probes Fhr-I, Fh

Schistosoma mansoni: male-biased sex ratios in snails and mice.

Adult sex ratios of Schistosoma mansoni, in mice, were shown to be biased toward males (3:1) despite the finding that sex ratios of miracidia were 50:50. The adult male bias was caused by greater male infectivity of miracidia for snails and cercariae for mice. A significantly higher percentage of male miracidia developed to cercarial production in unimiracidial infections (57 male, 34 female), and a significantly higher percentage of male cercariae developed to adulthood in mice (143 male, 79 female worms resulted from 900 male and 900 female cercariae). No significant differences were found b

The maintenance of hybrids by parasitism in a freshwater snail.

Hybrids have often been labelled evolutionary dead-ends due to their lower fertility and viability. However, there is growing awareness that hybridisation between different species may play a constructive role in animal evolution as a means to create variability. Thus, hybridisation and introgression may contribute to adaptive evolution, for example with regards to natural antagonists (parasites, predators, competitors) and adaptation to local environmental conditions. Here we investigated whether parasite intensity contributes to the continuous recreation of hybrids in 74 natural populations

Specific Nucleic AcId Ligation for the detection of Schistosomes: SNAILS.

Schistosomiasis, also known as bilharzia or snail fever, is a debilitating neglected tropical disease (NTD), caused by parasitic trematode flatworms of the genus Schistosoma, that has an annual mortality rate of 280,000 people in sub-Saharan Africa alone. Schistosomiasis is transmitted via contact with water bodies that are home to the intermediate host snail which shed the infective cercariae into the water. Schistosome lifecycles are complex, and while not all schistosome species cause human disease, endemic regions also typically feature animal-infecting schistosomes that can have broader e

Transplantation of schistosome sporocysts between host snails: A video guide.

Schistosomiasis is an important parasitic disease, touching roughly 200 million people worldwide. The causative agents are different Schistosoma species. Schistosomes have a complex life cycle, with a freshwater snail as intermediate host. After infection, sporocysts develop inside the snail host and give rise to human dwelling larvae. We present here a detailed step-by-step video instruction in English, French, Spanish and Portuguese that shows how these sporocysts can be manipulated and transferred from one snail to another. This procedure provides a technical basis for different types of ex

[Study on morphological and functional characterization of hemocytes in snails].

Snails are the intermediate host of Schistosoma and they play an important role in the transmission of schistosomiasis. The snails in different areas present various susceptibilities, which are related to the different hemocytes in the snails. There is not a common standard in the classification of hemocytes, and generally the hemocytes are divided into two categories: a granulocyte and a hyalinocyte. The granulocyte plays an important role in immunization, while hyalinocyte shows a less effect. Besides, soluble factors may also play a role in immunization.

Shooting darts: co-evolution and counter-adaptation in hermaphroditic snails.

BACKGROUND: Evolutionary conflicts of interest between the sexes often lead to co-evolutionary arms races consisting of repeated arisal of traits advantageous for one sex but harmful to the other sex, and counter-adaptations by the latter. In hermaphrodites, these antagonistic interactions are at least an equally important driving force. Here, we investigate the evolution of one of the most striking examples of sexual conflict in hermaphrodites, the so-called shooting of love-darts in land snails. Stabbing this calcareous dart through the partner's skin ultimately increases paternity. This tra

Evolutionary relationships between trematodes and snails emphasizing schistosomes and paragonimids.

Snails and digeneans have been associated for at least 200 million years. Their inter-relationships over such a time-span must have been complex and varied. Few studies have attempted to explore these relationships in the light of knowledge of the phylogeny of both host and parasite groups. Here we focus on two important families of digeneans, the Schistosomatidae and the Paragonimidae, for which molecular phylogenies are available. We investigate the types of evolutionary relationships between host and parasite, operating at different phylogenetic depths, that might explain current host speci

Particle binding capacity of snail saliva.

Gastropods forage with their radula, a thin chitinous membrane with embedded teeth, which scratch across the substrate to lose food particles. During this interaction, the risk of loosening particles is obvious without having a specialized mechanism holding them on the tooth surface. As mucus secretions are essential in molluscan life cycles and the locomotion and attachment gels are known to have an instant high adhesion, we have hypothesized that the saliva could support particle retention during feeding. As adhesion of snail saliva was not studied before, we present here an experimental set

How a single gene twists a snail.

The gastropod Lymnaea has unique features, that is, chirality, sinistrality, or dextrality, is displayed externally as well as internally, and is hereditary, being determined by a single-locus that functions maternally at the very early embryonic stage. Both sinistral and dextral snails exist in nature with the dextral one being dominant. Thus, the genus Lymnaea is an ideal target for studying chiromorphogenesis. This article gives a brief overview of the current state of research on chiromorphogenesis of Lymnaea (L.) stagnalis, mainly focusing on our own studies. Breeding experiments were per

Coevolution and compatibility in the snail-schistosome system.

In stark contrast to the huge body of theoretical work on the importance of hosts and parasites as selective agents acting on each other, until recently, little systematic empirical investigation of this issue has been attempted. Research on snail-schistosome interactions have, therefore, the potential for making an important contribution to the study of coevolution or reciprocal adaptation. This may be particularly pertinent since snail-schistosomes represent an indirectly transmitted macroparasite system, so often overlooked amongst both theoretical and empirical studies. Here we review idea
