Non-venomous snake bite and snake bite without envenoming in a Brazilian teaching hospital. Analysis of 91 cases.

A retrospective survey of 473 cases of snake bite admitted to a Brazilian teaching hospital from 1984 to 1990 revealed 91 cases of bite without envenoming and/or caused by non-venomous snakes. In 17 of these cases the snake was identified, and one patient was bitten by a snake-like reptile (Amphisbaena mertensii). In 43 cases diagnosis was made on clinical grounds (fang marks in the absence of signs of envenoming). The other 30 cases were of patients who complained of being bitten but who did not show any sign of envenoming or fang mark. Most cases occurred in men (66;73%), in the 10-19 years

High-dose anti-snake venom versus low-dose anti-snake venom in the treatment of poisonous snake bites--a critical study.

OBJECTIVES: To asses the optimum dose of anti-snake venom to treat snake bites cases effectively. This is particulary relevant in the present scenario when the cost of anti-snake venom ( Serum Institute of India) has gone up to nearly Rs. 400 per vial and the cross-section of people usually affected belong to the poor socioeconomic class. METHODOLOGY: One hundred snake bite cases with envenomation, irrespective of whether they were bitten by viper, cobra or krait, brought within 24 hours of the bite to Jubilee Mission Hospital, Trichur, Kerala State during the 15 months from August 2001 to Oc

Delayed Neurological Manifestation in Krait Bites Despite Anti-snake Venom Therapy.

A severe medical emergency that poses a life-threatening risk is envenomation from a snake bite. Among the several snake families, krait bites are known to result in neurological symptoms, including ptosis, headache, and sweating. A 12-year-old adolescent boy who had been bitten by a krait appeared in this instance. The patient showed neurological symptoms after receiving anti-snake venom (ASV). He had three rounds of ASV and made a full recovery. To the best of our knowledge, there have not yet been any reports of this kind of delayed neurological signs after a krait bite, despite getting ASV

Relaxation incisions of venomous snake "Japanese mamushi" bites to the hand.

Gloydius blomhoffii, commonly known as Japanese mamushi, is a venomous viper species found widely in Japan. The most frequently bitten regions are the fingers and toes, and severe swelling causes compression of peripheral arteries and/or compartment syndrome of the extremities. We experienced four cases of mamushi bites to the hand, and undertook relaxation incision in the hands of three of these patients. As a result, the patients who underwent relaxation incision did not show any skin necrosis or permanent sensory disturbance in the affected fingers. Relaxation incision can be useful to not

Snake bites in Moyen Chari district, Chad: a five-year experience.

Snake bites are of major public health importance in Africa as a cause of morbidity and mortality. Echis ocellatus is responsible for the majority of envenomation cases in West Africa. Antivenom immunotherapy is the only specific treatment available for envenomed patients. From January 1997 to December 2001, 325 patients suffering from snake bites were enrolled in a survey undertaken at Goundi Hospital, Chad. We analysed the percentage of envenomed patients, sex distribution, distribution along the year, lethality, hospital stay and recovery clotting time. Two hundred and ninety-eight patients

[Evaluation and treatment of snake bites in Bancoumana village in Mali].

A retrospective study was conducted on the epidemiological patterns and treatment of snakebites in the village of Bancoumana, 60 km south-west from Bamako. We analysed a total of 17 cases (8 males and 9 females). The distribution of snakebite cases by gender and by age showed that among subjects aged 5 to 20 years, boys were more exposed than girls (6 vs. 2), whereas, in those of 21 years and above, females were more frequently bitten than males (7 vs. 2) (p = 0.04). The treatment was mainly based on the use of anti-inflammatories and antibiotics, and sometimes of saline, glucose or anti-tetan

Spinal cord ischemia: The "snake bite sign".

Descriptive signs in radiology can aid in easier pattern recognition and quicker diagnosis. In spinal cord ischemia, paired anterior-horn T2-hyperintensities have traditionally been known as the "owl's eyes" or "snake eyes" sign. We discuss how these signs, while visually apt, convey no pathophysiologic context and propose renaming this finding the "snake bite sign". The image still evokes two punctate marks, yet the metaphor extends to a snake bite (two fang-like dots) rather than two bright foci (eyes) staring back at the viewer. Moreover, besides the sign metaphorically resembling a traumat

Herbal Compounds as an Antidote Against Snake Bite.

Snakebites have been declared a neglected health problem that is considered a national disease by the WHO (world health organisation). Asian countries like India have high snakebite death rates due to short antidotes and poorly equipped doctors. In today's scenario, local resources like herbs need to be used to prepare cheap antidotes and are often available to victims. Snake bites should be viewed as an emergency problem and require additional national guidelines, doctor training, expertise, and human concentration for effective and timely treatment-measures to be taken to ensure the availabi

Attempted suicide by snake bite: A case study.

Snake bite is an important public health issue in India and is almost always accidental in manner. Suicide by snake bite or injection of snake venom is extremely rare. Suicidal ideation and behavior is known to be influenced by various socio-economic and psychological factors. The method employed for suicide is also influenced by the occupation of the victim. We report a case where a snake charmer had attempted suicide by inflicting a bite by a monocled cobra.

[Case report: Snake bite - an odd case].

Emergency medical service is called by a 54-year-old man bitten by his rattlesnake. Upon initial survey we find the patient in a cardiopulmonary stable condition. He has bite marks and pain on his rapidly swelling middle finger of his right hand. Our initial treatment is immobilization of the patient. The snake raiser has already called the poison control center in Munich. By the help of this institution we bring him to a hospital having the right antivenom on hand.

Symmetrical peripheral gangrene following snake bite.

SPG (Symmetrical peripheral gangrene) is defined as symmetrical distal ischemic damage at two or more sites in the absence of large vessels obstruction. It has been ascribed to a number of infectious and non infectious conditions including connective tissue, cardiovascular, neoplastic and iatrogenic causes. We report a unique case of SPG in a 35-year-old Indian female who developed spontaneous gangrene of the distal phalanges of the right and left index, middle, ring and little fingers and the distal phalanges of all toes of the right and left foot following a snake bite. There have been very
