Snoring: surgical vs. nonsurgical management.

Eighteen children were treated for snoring. Surgical removal of enlarged tonsils and/or adenoids resulted in prompt and total elimination of snoring in 17 of these patients. One child required nasal and sinus surgery to gain relief from snoring. Eighty-three adults were interviewed, examined, and treated for snoring. Correction of anatomical abnormalities in the nose, soft palate, uvula, and pharynx achieved elimination of snoring in 72% of surgically treated cases. By contrast, nonsurgical remedies achieved snoring elimination in only 5% of patients (controls). Tracheostomy was required in 10

Alcohol, snoring and sleep apnea.

We studied the effect of alcohol ingestion on sleep-induced breathing abnormalities and arterial oxyhaemoglobin saturation in seven patients with a range of sleep-induced upper airway occlusion. The characteristics of each patient's sleep-induced breathing abnormality was established on one or more control all-night studies, and then a further all-night study was done immediately following alcohol ingestion. Alcohol increased the duration and frequency of the occlusive episodes in five patients with obstructive sleep apnoea, and resulted in a marked increase in the degree of hypoxaemia in the

Parental Snoring and Environmental Pollutants, but Not Aeroallergen Sensitization, Are Associated with Childhood Snoring in a Birth Cohort.

The objective of this study was to determine whether atopy and other clinical and environmental variables predict the risk of childhood habitual snoring (HS) in a birth cohort born to atopic parents. Participants completed clinical evaluations and questionnaires at ages 1-4 and age 7. HS was defined as snoring ≥3 nights/week. Traffic-related air pollution (TRAP) exposure was estimated using land-use regression. The association between early (≤age 4) and current (age 7) allergic disease, environmental exposures, and snoring at age 7 was examined using adjusted logistic regression. Of the 609 ch

Radiofrequency uvulopalatoplasty for primary snoring.

Simple snoring is a social problem, one that can gravely affect the patient's married life. About 40% of men and 20% of women are affected, and it often goes along with sleep-disordered breathing. Up to now various surgical techniques have been defined such as UPPP(uvulopalatopharyngo plasty), and laser-assisted uvulopalatoplasty (LAUP). Among the surgical methods, RAUP (radiofrequency assisted uvulopalatoplasty) is a minimal invasive, an easy performed, and time and cost effective one. We designed a before and after a clinical trial. The inclusion criteria were age >18 years, complaint of noc

Snoring, breathing pauses, and nightmares.

The present study investigated the correlations among snoring, breathing pauses during sleep, and nightmare frequency in a sample of 444 healthy individuals. Breathing pauses, but not snoring, were associated with heightened nightmare frequency. Whereas the hypothesis that shortage of oxygen directly causes nightmares is not supported by the literature, novel internal stimuli might affect dream content.

[Snoring/sleep apnea--surgically curable].

INTRODUCTION: Obstructive sleep apnea (OSA) is characterized by nocturnal collapsing of the upper airways. Nasal continuous positive airway pressure (nCPAP) ventilation is the gold standard in the treatment of obstructive sleep apnea syndrome (OSAS). Long-term compliance rates do not exceed more than 60 to 70%. Alternative multi-level surgeries are of interest, combining procedures at the level of the base of tongue and the soft palate in order to stabilize the airway. Preliminary results suggested the hyoid suspension as one part of the multi-level surgery concept to be of high effectiveness.

Transoral radiofrequency treatment of snoring.

OBJECTIVES/HYPOTHESIS: Radiofrequency ablation (RFA) may effectively treat snoring with acceptable patient tolerance. STUDY DESIGN: A cohort of patients with unacceptable snoring underwent RFA to the soft palate between October 1997 and May 2000. Before the therapy, a family member or significant other person was interviewed to rate snoring loudness. METHODS: Snoring was rated on a visual analog scale of 0 to 10 (in which 0 was no snoring and 10 was horrific snoring) before and after therapy. All patients were treated with transoral RFA administered under local anesthesia at 6-week intervals

[Snoring and postoperative pulmonary edema].

After uneventful ENT surgery, two male patients developed acute upper airway obstruction following extubation which progressed into negative pressure pulmonary edema (NPPE). One of these two patients suffered from known obstructive sleep apnoea syndrome, the other admitted to heavy snoring only after the incident. The pathophysiology of NPPE and the anaesthesiological implications of a patient's history of snoring are discussed.

Snoring and oral submucous fibrosis.

Forty patients above the age of 40 years with oral submucous fibrosis were studied to determine the frequency and severity of snoring. The results were compared with a controlled group of similar sex and age for presence of snoring. The present study indicates that patients with oral submucous fibrosis having a short and fixed uvula and scarred soft palate are less likely to develop snoring. Thus it is suggested that in laser surgery or in classical uvulopalatopharyngeal surgery, the uvula and soft palate should be reduced in size and volume to the extent of that found in oral submucous fibros

Snoring--a simple surgical solution.

In this paper a new palatal surgical technique for the treatment of snoring is described and evaluated. All 22 patients were severe snorers with no significant obstructive sleep apnoea, as confirmed by detailed sleep studies. The aim of the surgical technique was to eliminate the vibration of the soft palate and the posterior pillars which occurs during snoring. This was achieved under general anaesthetic by making a 1.5 cm vertical full thickness incision in the soft palate from the superior pole of the tonsil towards the pterygoid hamulus using monopolar cutting diathermy. Specifically desig

Mechanical modeling of palatal snoring.

The mechanism of human snoring caused by vibration of the soft palate and the characteristics of the noise are investigated. The soft palate becomes unstable and vibrates violently once the inspiratory flow exceeds a critical speed. The physiological phenomenon is modeled by studying flow over a flexible plate. In determining the stability of this flow, the trailing edge conditions are crucial. It is found that the noise generated in the simple experimental configuration has distinct characteristics found in human snores. For example, there is an antiphase relation between unsteady pressures f

[Dangerous snoring. Sleep-apnea syndrome].

Snoring usually is trivial and unimportant, but it can turn into a social or medical problem. Obesity, hypertension and heart disease are more frequent among snorers than among nonsnorers, and especially snorers with hypersomnia during the day are at risk. Hypersomnia in association with snoring usually signifies obstructive sleep apnea. Increased resistance in the upper airways, together with negative inspiratory pharyngeal pressure and muscular hypotonia during deep non-REM and REM sleep, lead to collapse of the pharynx, hypoxia and hypercapnia. Only after arousal from sleep does muscle tone

Snoring: clinical implications and treatment.

Snoring has only recently come under wide study. Recent research has established the close relationship of severe snoring to sleep apnea in terms of the obstructive pathophysiology. Snoring tends to increase in severity over time and may progress to sleep apnea. Severe snoring may be associated with pulmonary and systemic hypertension, secondary polycythemia, and cardiac arrhythmias.

Loudness of snoring, not apnea-hypopnea index, is associated with hyperactivity behavior in snoring children and adolescents.

STUDY OBJECTIVES: It is unknown whether loudness of snoring or hypoxic burden are related to higher hyperactivity scores in habitually snoring children and whether this effect is impacted by the severity of sleep-disordered breathing (SDB). This study investigates the prevalence of hyperactivity in children with habitual snoring and the independent effects of loudness of snoring, as reported by the parents, hypoxic burden and obstructive sleep apnea syndrome's severity (OSAS) on hyperactivity, as measured by the Conners' Parent Rating Scale-Hyperactivity Index (CPRS-HI). METHODS: Children wit

Impacts of an Oral Appliance on Snoring in Adults with Varying Degrees of Snoring Severity: A Preliminary Study.

Background and Objectives: Oral appliances (OAs) are commonly used to manage sleep-disordered breathing conditions, including primary snoring, and offer an alternative treatment for individuals with obstructive sleep apnea (OSA) who cannot tolerate continuous positive airway pressure (CPAP) therapy. Our study analyzed the possible factors associated with higher snoring rates compared with those associated with lower snoring rates. Materials and Methods: A customized dental brace with a tongue compressor was the essential part of the Lin OA (LOA). The compressor is available in various lengths,

A numerical study of palatal snoring.

OBJECTIVES: The main purpose of this paper is to investigate the upper airway (oral and/or nasal) with different inhalation speeds and obstruction depths to generate remarkable notes on palatal snoring and obstructive sleep apnea (OSA). Another important aspect is to study different soft palate biomechanical properties and their relationships with different physical parameters on palatal snoring and OSA. METHODS: The human upper-airway is modelled in 2D, and a cantilever plate model principle is adopted for the soft palate during fluid-structure interaction (FSI) simulations. Various scenario
