Clinical outcomes following surgical fixation of proximal humerus fractures in skiers and snowboarders.

BACKGROUND: Downhill skiing and snowboarding are popular winter sports, yet limited data describe outcomes after surgical fixation of proximal humerus fractures in these patients. The purpose of this study was to evaluate clinical outcomes and return to sport (RTS) after surgical fixation of proximal humerus fractures sustained while skiing or snowboarding, and to determine the influence of age, sex, sport, injury severity (Neer classification), and fixation type (open reduction internal fixation vs. closed reduction percutaneous pinning) on these outcomes. METHODS: A retrospective cohort stu

A case of acute dorsal radiocarpal dislocation with radial styloid fracture.

We describe a case report of dorsal radiocarpal dislocation with fracture of the radial styloid process. A 21-year-old right-handed male was injured in a fall while snowboarding. Plain radiographic findings revealed dorsal dislocation of radiocarpal joint with fracture of the radial styloid process; we performed CT studies to examine the radius fracture in greater detail. These findings revealed a radial styloid fracture with avulsion fracture of dorsal articular margin of the distal part of the radius. Surgical treatment was performed 4 days after the injury. However, it was impossible to red

Transfer of supinator motor branches to the posterior interosseous nerve to reconstruct thumb and finger extension in tetraplegia: case report.

We treated a patient with tetraplegia who had paralysis of thumb and finger extension by transferring supinator motor branches to the posterior interosseous nerve. Surgery was performed bilaterally, 7 months after a spinal cord injury. Six months after surgery, with the wrist in neutral, extension of the thumb and finger were almost full, bilaterally. In tetraplegic patients with strong wrist extensors, supinator motor branch transfer is a promising new alternative for the reconstruction of thumb and finger extension.

Research on Injury Risk of Elite Male Athletes in Racing Ice Sports based on Blood Indexes.

This study aims to explore the relationship between blood biochemical indexes and injury risk for elite male athletes in racing ice sports. The study compared the demographic indexes, monthly injuries, and longitudinal tracking data for the athletes. The non-linear relationship was analyzed using an unrestricted cubic spline. Generalized estimating equations were used to estimate the relative risk (OR) of injury occurrence. Receiver operating characteristics and the area under the curve determined diagnostic accuracy. In the snow sledding group, when creatine kinase rises to 489.46 u/L or test

[Bony injuries of the shoulder girdle in snowboarding].

BACKGROUND: The fracture of the clavicle is the second most common fracture in snowboarding after the distal radius fracture. Nonsurgical treatment is frequently the treatment of first choice. For displaced fractures, surgical treatment is recommended. METHODS: In general, internal fixation can be performed with a plate osteosynthesis or an intramedullary nail. Clinical studies were able to show similar and even slightly better functional results of the intramedullary nail in comparison to plate osteosynthesis. Because of less surgical trauma and better cosmetic results, intramedullary system

Neuro-mechanical and chemical influences on locomotor respiratory coupling in humans.

Mechanisms of coordination between breathing and movement during dynamic exercise are still a matter of debate. This study aimed to examine the degree of coordination between breathing and arm propulsion patterns and to compare the relative contribution of neuro-mechanical and chemical factors. Thirteen trained cross-country skiers performed constant submaximal 6-min roller skiing exercises on a motorized driven treadmill in two different poling techniques (V2A and V2 skating techniques) at two exercise intensity levels corresponding to the first and second ventilatory thresholds. Associated factors, nonlinear risk patterns and effect heterogeneity of severe injuries in recreational skiers and snowboarders.

BACKGROUND: Severe injuries in recreational alpine skiing and snowboarding impose disproportionate clinical and societal burden. Evidence on modifiable countermeasures beyond helmets remains fragmented and may vary across risk profiles and exposure conditions. This study aimed to identify factors associated with severe injuries among recreational skiers and snowboarders, and to examine nonlinear dose-response relationships and effect modification by preventive practices. METHODS: We conducted a retrospective cross-sectional injury-severity study of injured adult skiers and snowboarders treate

Sledging is still a seasonal source of serious injury in Scottish children.

In 2002 it was highlighted that sledging results in serious injuries in the paediatric population and safety recommendations were made. The aim of this study was to re-examine the number, severity and aetiology of sledging-related trauma. This was a retrospective study performed in the Paediatric Emergency Department (PED) of the Royal Aberdeen Children's Hospital (RACH) during two periods totalling 12 days, when there was continuous snow ground cover. Records of all attendances were scrutinized to identify patients with sledging injuries. The nature, mechanism and severity of injury, and subs

A comparison of recreational skiing- and snowboarding-related injuries at a Colorado ski resort, 2012/13-2016/17.

The purpose of this study was to compare injury patterns between recreational skiers and snowboarders. Injured skiers (n = 3,961) and snowboarders (n = 2,428) presented to a mountainside medical clinic, 2012/13-2016/17. Variables investigated for analysis included demographics/characteristics, injury event information, and injury information. Skiers were older than snowboarders (34.3 ± 19.3 vs. 23.2 ± 10.5 years, p < 0.001); a greater proportion of skiers were female (46.3% vs. 27.8%, p < 0.001). Most skiers (84.4%) and snowboarders (84.5%) were helmeted at the time of injury (p = 0.93). Snowb

Disturbance of wildlife by outdoor winter recreation: allostatic stress response and altered activity-energy budgets.

Anthropogenic disturbance of wildlife is of growing conservation concern, but we lack comprehensive approaches of its multiple negative effects. We investigated several effects of disturbance by winter outdoor sports on free-ranging alpine Black Grouse by simultaneously measuring their physiological and behavioral responses. We experimentally flushed radio-tagged Black Grouse from their snow burrows, once a day, during several successive days, and quantified their stress hormone levels (corticosterone metabolites in feces [FCM] collected. from individual snow burrows). We also measured feeding

In-area and backcountry snowboarding: medical and safety aspects.

Snowboarding is now a well-established winter sport and a popular mode of mountaineering. In-area and backcountry snowboarding are defined, as well as a new term, glisse, that refers to all types of skis and snowboards. New developments in equipment focus on boot and binding systems. Backcountry travel is highlighted, including ascent with snowshoes, skis, a splitboard, and crampons. Injuries are about 4-6 per 1000 snowboarding days. Upper extremity injuries are most often wrist sprains or fractures. Lower extremity injuries are primarily ankle sprains and are generally less severe than knee i
