Heart failure in an elite soccer player.

The following case illustrates several important features: firstly, the occurrence of tachycardia-induced cardiomyopathy during sustained atrial tachycardia at a relatively modest heart rate of 130 beats per minute, in an elite athlete. Secondly, tachycardia may induce severe and occasionally life-threatening impairment of the systolic ventricular function without a history of palpitations. Finally, our patient is an excellent example of the complete recovery that may follow successful radiofrequency catheter ablation, performed promptly once the correct diagnosis has been confirmed.

Chondral delamination of the knee in soccer players.

This study reports on the diagnosis and treatment of chondral delamination in the knees of soccer players. The authors attempted to provide a clinical standard for comparison with emerging cartilage repair techniques. Twenty-three consecutive chondral fractures in a homogeneous population of athletes were evaluated using physical examination, magnetic resonance imaging, and arthroscopic examination. All knees were treated with debridement to a stable border and removal of the calcified cartilage base. Results were graded using the scoring system advocated by proponents of chondral transplant.

Soccer injuries and their relation to physical maturity.

A prospective study of injuries encountered during participation in a summer soccer camp for youths aged 6 through 17 years revealed an injury incidence of 10.6 per 1000 hours for girls (107 injuries in 458 girls) and 7.3 per 1000 hours for boys (109 injuries in 681 boys). For both sexes, the incidence of injury increased at age 14 years. One certified athletic trainer (W.D.C.) assessed and documented all injuries during the course of the study. Seventy percent of injuries involved the lower extremities. Contusions represented 35.2%, strains 27.8%, sprains 19.4%, and fractures and dislocations

Do full leg compression sleeves improve repeated sprint performance after soccer-specific exercise in adolescent male soccer players?

This study examines the effects of full-leg compression sleeves worn during a 90-min recovery period on repeated sprint performance and exercise-induced leg soreness (DOMS) in youth soccer players. Twelve male youth soccer players (17 ± 0 years; 178 ± 7 cm; 70.9 ± 7.5 kg) performed a repeated sprint protocol (5 × 30 m sprints, 20 s recovery; RSP1) followed by a modified Loughborough Intermittent Shuttle Test (LIST) to induce fatigue. After the LIST, players underwent a 90-min passive recovery wearing either full leg compression sleeves (COMP, 19-25 mmHg) or regular gym pants (CON) in a randomi

Effects of fasting during Ramadan month on soccer-specific technical performance, cognitive function, and perceptions in soccer players.

We aimed to examine the effects of Ramadan fasting (RF) and high-intensity short-term maximal performance on elite soccer players' shooting accuracy, executive function (EF), and perceptions. Sixteen Muslim elite players fasting during Ramadan underwent assessments before (BR), during (DR), and after Ramadan (AR). Soccer-specific technical performance was evaluated using the Loughborough Soccer Shooting Test (LSST) before and after a 5-metre shuttle run test (5mSRT), conducted at the same time-of-day (17:00 h). Performance metrics recorded included higher distance (HD), total distance (TD), an

Locomotor performance parameters as predictors of high-performing male soccer teams. A multiple-season study on professional soccer.

This study aims to explore the interplay between locomotor demands and goal differentials to better understand their combined influence on overall success. Spanning three competitive seasons within the male Turkish Super League, this study analyzed all participating teams across 124 matches. Locomotor demands, including total distance (m) covered (TD), distances covered (m) at different speed thresholds (0.21-2.0 m/s; 2.01-4.0 m/s; 4.01-5.5 m/s; and 5.5-7.7 m/s), and the number of accelerations in range of 5.5-7.0 m/s (n), were quantified using an optical tracking system. Urinary N-Terminal Fragment of Titin Reflects Muscle Damage After a Soccer Match in Male Collegiate Soccer Players.

Tanabe, Y, Shimizu, K, Kondo, E, Yasumatsu, M, Nakamura, D, Sagayama, H, and Takahashi, H. Urinary N-terminal fragment of titin reflects muscle damage after a soccer match in male collegiate soccer players. J Strength Cond Res 35(2): 360-365, 2021-Previous studies have demonstrated that noninvasive urinary N-terminal fragment of titin (U-titin) concentration highly correlates with serum creatine kinase (CK) activity, a classic invasive muscle damage marker. This finding indicates that U-titin could be used to estimate muscle damage. However, these results were achieved using a laboratory-based

Anticipating the movement of football (soccer) goalkeepers.

The outcome of a penalty kick can pivot the fate of a football match. While previous research has mainly examined how goalkeepers anticipate shot direction, little is known about how penalty takers anticipate goalkeeper movements when using a keeper-dependent strategy. The current study examined how temporal constraints shape the penalty takers' ability to anticipate the movement direction of the keeper, and whether expertise plays a role in such anticipation. Participants (N = 253; 130 experts; 123 novices) completed a temporal occlusion task in which they viewed 64 penalty kicks filmed from

Purposeful Heading in Youth Soccer: A Review.

Recent public concern over the short- and long-term effects of repetitive head impacts (RHI) associated with purposeful heading in soccer has led researchers to study a multitude of variables related to this important aspect of the game. Of particular interests are the effects of soccer heading in the youth population (≤ 13 years old) whose brains are undergoing rapid development. We conducted a review on youth soccer heading that includes purposeful heading frequency, head impact biomechanics, head injuries, clinical outcomes, and modifying factors. We have concluded that youth soccer players

Spontaneous Pneumomediastinum in an Adolescent Soccer Player.

Spontaneous pneumomediastinum (SPM) is an uncommon and usually benign self-limiting clinical disorder found in young people, often without apparent precipitating factors or diseases. A pressure gradient exists between the peripheral pulmonary alveoli and the hilum, and increased intra-alveolar pressure causes rupture of the terminal alveoli. We present the case of a 15-year-old male soccer player who presented with a complaint of anterior chest pain and dysphagia after stopping the strong ball with his chest. His symptom gradually progressed over hours. We can make the diagnosis of SPM using b

Concussion in soccer: a comprehensive review of the literature.

Sports-related concussion has been examined extensively in collision sports such as football and hockey. However, historically, lower-risk contact sports such as soccer have only more recently garnered increased attention. Here, we review articles examining the epidemiology, injury mechanisms, sex differences, as well as the neurochemical, neurostructural and neurocognitive changes associated with soccer-related concussion. From 436 titles and abstracts, 121 full texts were reviewed with a total of 64 articles identified for inclusion. Concussion rates are higher during competitions and in fem

Subungual Exostosis in a Young Soccer Player.

BACKGROUND: Subungual exostosis is a relatively uncommon, benign osteocartilaginous tumor of the distal phalanx of the toes or fingers in young adults, considered as a rare variant of osteochondroma. Differential diagnoses include subungual verruca (viral wart), pyogenic granuloma, osteochondroma, amelanotic subungual melanoma and glomus tumour. Misdiagnosis and total onychodystrophy frequently occur as a result of late treatment or inadequate treatment strategy. Dermoscopy could be a useful technique, involved in the diagnostic process, although X-ray examination and histopathology are mandat

Are there long-term sequelae from soccer?

A long-term soccer career seems to increase the risk for early development of osteoarthritis in the lower extremity. Soccer constitutes a risk for osteoarthritis in two different ways. First, by the increased risk for knee injuries in soccer, such as meniscus and anterior cruciate ligament injuries; and second, by the high loading on hip and knee joints that occurs in soccer. The risk for these undesirable effects of soccer are higher in top-level players.

Meniscoid lesions of the ankle in soccer players.

In 1950, Wolin and his colleagues described nine patients who exhibited a "meniscoid" lesion of the ankle. He used this term to describe a mass of hyalinized tissue that formed following an inversion sprain of the ankle. This band of tissue was predisposed to trapping between the fibula and the talus. His patients presented with persistent pain and swelling over the anterior aspect of the ankle. In the last 3 years, four patients have presented with this lesion at the Methodist Sports Medicine Center in Indianapolis. They were all soccer players who had experienced repeated ankle sprains accom
