Female methamphetamine users: social characteristics and sexual risk behavior.

The primary objective of this research was to expand our knowledge regarding the personal and social characteristics of female methamphetamine (meth) users, their motivations for using meth, patterns of meth use, medical and social problems associated with meth use, and the relationship between meth use and sexual risk behaviors. The sample consisted of 98 HIV-negative, heterosexually-identified, meth-using females residing in San Diego, California. Female meth users were characterized by personal and social disadvantage, high rates of psychiatric symptomatology, and high levels of sexual risk

Behavior Evaluation Scale: validity in studies on social anxiety.

The present study was an initial effort to evaluate the use of the Behavior Evaluation Scale, a measure of the tendency to perceive behavior as pathological, in studies on social anxiety. 61 undergraduate students provided ratings on attributional dimensions and completed the scale as well as the Fear of Negative Evaluation questionnaire. There was a moderate correlation of .48 between the Behavior Evaluation Scale scores and fear of evaluation. In addition, participants who perceived the behavior as pathological scored higher on fear of evaluation only if they made internal or general attribu

The effects of several anorexigenics on monkey social behavior.

The effects of fenfluramine HCl, diethylpropion HCl, and methylphenidate HCl on social behavior were studied in a heterosexual group of stumptailed monkeys (M. arctoides). Subjects were treated concurrently (i.e., every monkey received the same treatment on a given day). The range of doses studied was: fenfluramine (1.0-10 mg/kg), methylphenidate (1.0-5.0 mg/kg), and diethylpropion (2.0-20 mg/kg). In general most drug/dose combinations produced decreases in social interactions. However, there was one notable exception; presenting was dramatically increased following dosing with methylphenidate

Human social behavior and oxytocin: Molecular and neuronal mechanisms.

Oxytocin (OT) is a hormone that is crucial for regulating various human social behaviors, such as maternal instinct, empathy, and trust. Its secretion in the brain is triggered by social stimuli. Recent research demonstrated impaired regulation of OT secretion and reduced social behaviors in patients with arginine vasopressin deficiency (central diabetes insipidus). OT interacts with other hormones to regulate human trust. Moreover, it has been shown to generate feelings of attachment and trust toward other and familiar consumer brands, thereby, potentially impacting personal consumption, whic

Endolysosomal TPCs regulate social behavior by controlling oxytocin secretion.

Oxytocin (OT) is a prominent regulator of many aspects of mammalian social behavior and stored in large dense-cored vesicles (LDCVs) in hypothalamic neurons. It is released in response to activity-dependent Ca2+ influx, but is also dependent on Ca2+ release from intracellular stores, which primes LDCVs for exocytosis. Despite its importance, critical aspects of the Ca2+-dependent mechanisms of its secretion remain to be identified. Here we show that lysosomes surround dendritic LDCVs, and that the direct activation of endolysosomal two-pore channels (TPCs) provides the critical Ca2+ signals to

A mu-opioid feedback model of human social behavior.

Since the discovery of pain relieving and rewarding properties of opiates such as morphine or heroin, the human mu-opioid system has been a target for medical research on pain processing and addiction. Indeed, pain and pleasure act mutually inhibitory on each other and the mu-opioid system has been suggested as an underlying common neurobiological mechanism. Recently, research interest extended the role of the endogenous mu-opioid system beyond the hedonic value of pain and pleasure towards human social-emotional behavior. Here we propose a mu-opioid feedback model of social behavior. This mod

Prefrontal cortical control of a brainstem social behavior circuit.

The prefrontal cortex helps adjust an organism's behavior to its environment. In particular, numerous studies have implicated the prefrontal cortex in the control of social behavior, but the neural circuits that mediate these effects remain unknown. Here we investigated behavioral adaptation to social defeat in mice and uncovered a critical contribution of neural projections from the medial prefrontal cortex to the dorsal periaqueductal gray, a brainstem area vital for defensive responses. Social defeat caused a weakening of functional connectivity between these two areas, and selective inhibi

Gonadectomy negatively impacts social behavior of adolescent male primates.

Social behavior changes dramatically during primate adolescence. However, the extent to which testosterone and other gonadal hormones are necessary for adolescent social behavioral development is unknown. In this study, we determined that gonadectomy significantly impairs social dominance in naturalistic settings and changes reactions to social stimuli in experimental settings. Rhesus macaques were castrated (n= 6) or sham operated (n=6) at age 2.4 years, group-housed for 2 years, and ethograms were collected weekly. During adolescence the gonadally intact monkeys displayed a decrease in subor

High-risk sexual behavior at social venues in Madagascar.

BACKGROUND: Persistent high levels of sexually transmitted infection (STI) in Madagascar indicate current prevention strategies are inadequate. STI/HIV prevention based in social venues may play an important role in reaching individuals at risk of infection. We identified venues where people meet sexual partners and measured the need and potential for venue-based prevention. METHODS: Interviews were conducted in 7 Madagascar towns with 1) community informants to identify social venues, 2) individuals socializing at a sample of venues to assess sexual behavior among venue patrons, and 3) venue

Automated Inference of Social Anxiety From Behavior in Social Virtual Reality: Cross-Sectional Observational Study.

BACKGROUND: Social anxiety often manifests through behaviors such as reduced gaze to the eyes and lower speech volume. While these markers have been examined in face-to-face interactions, large-scale assessments remain challenging. Social virtual reality (VR) offers a promising alternative by enabling naturalistic interactions in which behavior can be captured at scale, but it remains unclear if people show naturalistic behavior in such artificial environments. OBJECTIVE: We examined whether behavioral and physiological markers associated with social anxiety in real-life interactions similarl

Examining Safety Behavior Subtypes Across Distinct Social Contexts in Social Anxiety Disorder and Major Depression.

People with social anxiety disorder (SAD) use different types of safety behaviors that have been classified as avoidance vs. impression management. The current study investigated differences in safety behavior subtype use in 132 individuals with principal diagnoses of social anxiety disorder (SAD, n = 69), major depressive disorder (MDD, n = 30), and nonpatient controls (n = 33) across two social contexts: an interpersonal relationship-building task (social affiliation) and a speech task (social performance). We examined whether diagnostic groups differed in safety behavior subtype use and whe

Immersive Social Interaction Assay (ISIA) for Studying Voluntary and Long-Term Social Behavior in Mice.

Social behavior is highly dynamic and context-dependent, yet many commonly used rodent social assays rely on short testing periods and simplified measures of proximity or investigation. Here, we present a detailed protocol for constructing and using the immersive social interaction assay (ISIA), a behavioral paradigm designed to capture prolonged, voluntary social interactions in freely moving mice. The ISIA apparatus consists of two modified standard rodent home-cage chambers connected by a 3D-printed tube with an adjustable inner diameter. This design enables flexible experimental control: a

Hypothalamus-pituitary-adrenal axis hyperresponsiveness is associated with increased social avoidance behavior in social phobia.

BACKGROUND: Social avoidance and inhibition in animals is associated with hyperresponsiveness of the glucocorticoid stress-system. In humans, the relation between glucocorticoid stress-reactivity and social avoidance behavior remains largely unexplored. We investigated whether increased cortisol stress-responsiveness is linked to increased social avoidance behavior in patients with social anxiety disorder (SAD). METHODS: Patients with SAD (n = 18) as well as two control groups of healthy participants (n = 22) and patients with posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD; n = 17), respectively, perfor

[Group intervention with children with problematic behavior: behavioral, affective and social evolution].

The purpose of this research is to examine the evolution of children with problematic sexual behaviour following their participation in a group treatment program. The sample was made up of 43 children (33 boys and 10 girls) with an average age of 9 years, 7 months (SD = 1.85) The evolution of the children is measured administering behavioural rating instruments, both before and after the treatment program, on multiple dimensions of problematic sexual behaviour, externalizing and internalizing problems and social skills. The actual level of the children's participation is documented. The result

Assessing social competence and antisocial behaviors in children: item response theory analysis of the home and community social behavior scales.

BACKGROUND: The Home and Community Social Behavior Scales (HCSBS) is a rating scale that assesses social competence and antisocial behavior among children and youths between ages 5-18. The present study aimed to investigate the psychometric properties of the HCSBS by applying item response theory (IRT). METHODS: The HCSBS was completed by parents of 551 Norwegian children refereed to three independent interventions towards problem behaviors. Data used in this study was collected before the interventions started. IRT was carried out in R version 4.0.0 to investigate HCSBS items, subscales and

Resisting aggression in social contexts: The influence of life-course persistent antisocial behavior on behavioral and neural responses to social feedback.

Early adulthood has long been recognized as a potential turning point for the development of antisocial behavior, due to changes in social contexts and ongoing psychological and neurobiological maturation. However, it remains unclear how different developmental trajectories of antisocial behavior, their neural underpinnings, and individual differences in psychopathic traits may help explain the distinct developmental outcomes of individuals who persist in or desist from antisocial behavior in early adulthood - such as how they respond to others in social contexts. Therefore, in the current stu

Marijuana-related problems and social anxiety: the role of marijuana behaviors in social situations.

Individuals with elevated social anxiety appear particularly vulnerable to marijuana-related problems. In fact, individuals with social anxiety may be more likely to experience marijuana-related impairment than individuals with other types of anxiety. It is therefore important to determine whether constructs particularly relevant to socially anxious individuals play a role in the expression of marijuana-related problems in this vulnerable population. Given that both social avoidance and using marijuana to cope with negative affect broadly have been found to play a role in marijuana-related pro
