Contextualising the social capital of Australian Aboriginal and non-Aboriginal men in prison.

Social capital is a valuable resource that has received little attention in the prison context. Differences in the construct and accessibility of bonding, bridging, and linking social capital exist for Aboriginal Australians in mainstream society, but were previously unexplored in prison. This study seeks to understand contextual differences of social capital for Australian Aboriginal and non-Aboriginal men in prison. Thirty male inmates participated in qualitative interviews across three New South Wales (NSW) correctional centres. Interviews were completed between November 2014 and March 2015

Social capital and immunization against the 2009 A(H1N1) pandemic in the American States.

The objective of this paper was to investigate the association between contextual social capital and immunization coverage rates. A cross-sectional, ecologic study design was used. Three different estimations of contextual social capital in American states have been used. Data on immunization coverage rates at state level comes from Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. Correlation coefficients were calculated to investigate the bivariate association between the independent variable social capital and the dependent variable 2009 A(H1N1) immunization coverage rates. A multivariate OLS reg

Psychometric properties of the community social capital measure: evidence from the JAGES project.

OBJECTIVES: This study aims to test the factor structure of the social capital scale used in the Japan Evaluation Gerontological Study (JAGES) considering individual and community level, measurement invariance between levels, internal consistency of dimensions, and nomological validity. This instrument was developed within a multilevel framework to explore the relationship between social capital and individual outcomes but has only been validated at the community level. METHOD: Sample included 194566 Japanese participants grouped in 1049 communities, aged 65 years and older. RESULTS: Analysi

Association between social capital and COVID-19 preventive behaviors: Country-level ecological study.

BACKGROUND: The association between social capital and preventive behaviors against COVID-19 remains controversial. We examined the association between social capital and preventive behaviors against COVID-19 at country level. METHODS: The data on country-level social capital (i.e., social trust, group affiliations, civic responsibility, and confidence in state institutions) was obtained from a previous literature based on World Value Survey. Preventive behaviors were calculated as the percentage of people in a country who took COVID-19 preventive behaviors (i.e., physical distancing, hand hy

Social capital and mental health: a comparative analysis of four low income countries.

Women and the poor are disproportionately affected by common mental disorders (CMD), and women in low income countries are particularly at risk. Social capital may explain some of the geographical variation in CMD, but the association between social capital and CMD in low income countries has rarely been studied. This paper aims to explore the relationship between individual and ecological measures of social capital and maternal CMD in four low income countries. Cross-sectional data from the Young Lives (YL) study with information across 234 communities in Peru, Ethiopia, Vietnam and Andhra Pr

Doing well by doing good: The role of entrepreneurial mindfulness, social capital, and moral obligation in social entrepreneurial intentions.

This study examines the mediating role of entrepreneurial social capital on the relationship between entrepreneurial mindfulness and entrepreneurial intentions, and how moral obligation enhances the indirect effect of mindfulness on such intentions through social capital. We draw on the notions of prosocial behavior and social capital to test our assertions with PLS-SEM. Our findings suggest that entrepreneurial social capital complements the relationship between entrepreneurial mindfulness and social entrepreneurial intentions and that moral obligation substantially enhances their indirect ef

Substance use, recovery capital, and social networks of adolescents recently initiating inpatient treatment.

BACKGROUND: A variety of personal and environmental resources (recovery capital: RC) support recovery for adolescents. Social identity theory suggests one's alcohol and other drug (AOD) use behavior is strongly influenced by social network behavior. This study examined how the level of pretreatment substance use was associated with RC and social network characteristics among youth entering inpatient treatment. Understanding these relationships may help inform initial treatment engagement and post-treatment transitions. METHOD: Participants (N = 108; Mage=17.1; 61% male; 70% White) completed s

Bridging social capital among Facebook users and COVID-19 cases growth in Arizona.

Social capital is an important social determinant of health, more specifically bridging social capital, which connects individuals and communities across societal divides. This article reports on the findings of a study about the relationship between bridging social capital and COVID-19 infection trends within the state of Arizona from October 2020 to November 2021. Economic connectedness (EC), derived from Facebook friendship connections, served as a measure of aggregated bridging social capital among residents in each ZCTA (ZIP code tabulation area). Analysis of 192 ZCTAs in Arizona revealed

Burnout, Psychological Capital and Health during COVID-19 Social Isolation: A Longitudinal Analysis.

BACKGROUND: Drawing on the impact of the COVID-19 global pandemic and its sanitary measures on coping strategies for preserving health, it is also necessary to add exposure to certain work stressors, such as burnout. The aim of the study was to assess the influence of the confinement situation caused by COVID-19 on the levels of self-perceived health and psychological capital in a sample of workers, as well as to analyze whether exposure to burnout before social isolation would help to explain the levels of health and psychological capital. METHODS: Data were collected in a longitudinal desig

County-Level Social Capital and Bacterial Sexually Transmitted Infections in the United States.

BACKGROUND: The association between county-level social capital indices (SCIs) and the 3 most commonly reported sexually transmitted infections (STIs) in the United States is lacking. In this study, we determined and examined the association between 2 recently developed county-level SCIs (ie, Penn State Social Capital Index [PSSCI] vs United States Congress Social Capital Index [USCSCI]) and the 3 most commonly reported bacterial STIs (chlamydia, gonorrhea, and syphilis) using spatial and nonspatial regression techniques. Social and recovery capital amongst homeless hostel residents who use drugs and alcohol.

BACKGROUND: Homeless people who use drugs and alcohol have been described as one of the most marginalised groups in society. In this paper, we explore the relationships of homeless drug and alcohol users who live in hostels in order to ascertain the nature and extent of their social and recovery capital. METHODS: Data were collected during 2013 and 2014 from three hostels. Each hostel was in a different English city and varied in size and organisational structure. Semi-structured interviews were conducted with 30 residents (21 men; 9 women) who self-reported current drink and/or drug problems

"Couch surfing" of Latino foster care alumni: reliance on peers as social capital.

Youth exiting foster care often experience difficulties transitioning into adulthood. This paper focuses on Latino foster care youth in a major southwestern U.S. city and addresses the importance of peer networks as a crucial form of social capital as youth leave foster care. Case studies illustrate experiences of foster care alumni ranging in age from 18 to 26. Findings suggest that lack of housing forces youth into residential mobility or "couch surfing" and episodes of homelessness. Familial connections continue to be important to Latino youth. When Latino youth are unsuccessful in re-estab

College Students' Social Media Use and Digital Well-Being: The Chain Mediating Roles of Social Capital and Digital Trust.

BACKGROUND: As social media becomes deeply integrated into the daily lives of college students, concerns regarding its impact on psychological health and adaptive digital experiences have intensified. However, Current academic research mainly focuses on offline subjective well-being. Also, empirical research on the mechanisms between social media use and digital well-being is still insufficient. To address these gaps, the present study aims to unpack the sequential chain mediating mechanisms of two distinct forms of social capital and digital trust linking social media use intensity to digital

How the social media impact women's psychological well-being in the patriarchal structure? The moderating effect of social capital.

BACKGROUND: Despite technological, political and economic progress, Pakistan is still a traditionally patriarchal society, and cultural norms curb women's freedom of socialization, which contributes to poor mental health. The digital technology spaces are rampant with male dominance, and offline cultural behaviours are replicated. Therefore, the current research in Pakistan intends to focus solely on women, their social media uses and the consequent impact on their psychological well-being. Furthermore, the mediation role of social capital is explored, which is linked to women's socialization.

The double-edged sword of social capital: Impacts on women's health in extreme poverty.

Social capital is extremely important in determining health outcomes yet relatively little is known about how different types of social capital impact on individuals' health outcomes, particularly for the poorest in society. We use secondary data generated from a quasi-experimental study conducted among extremely poor women in rural Bangladesh and apply Propensity Score Matching (PSM) technique to create comparable treatment and control groups. Using a comparative analytical approach, we examine how social capital effects vary and investigate how different social capital measures are associate

Leadership in Times of Crisis: The Potential for Increasing Social Capital in Displaced and Fragmented Communities.

Emergency displacement bears ecological, social, and psychological implications. This article examines the role of local leaders in increasing social capital in temporary housing shelters inhabited by displaced and fragmented communities, focusing on the conditions that undermined social capital and the challenges of sustaining it over time. A qualitative study was conducted in Israeli temporary housing shelters during wartime. The study included 21 individual interviews with local leaders across seven of these sites, as well as three focus groups with 25 professional community social workers.
