Social Network Change after Moving into Permanent Supportive Housing: Who Stays and Who Goes?

Social relationships are important among persons experiencing homelessness, but there is little research on changes in social networks among persons moving into permanent supportive housing (PSH). Using data collected as part of a longitudinal study of 405 adults (aged 39+) moving into PSH, this study describes network upheaval during this critical time of transition. Interviews conducted prior to and after three months of living in PSH assessed individual-level characteristics (demographics, homelessness history, health and mental health) and included a social network component that assessed

Environmental and Social Change Drive the Explosive Emergence of Zika Virus in the Americas.

Since Zika virus (ZIKV) was detected in Brazil in 2015, it has spread explosively across the Americas and has been linked to increased incidence of microcephaly and Guillain-Barré syndrome (GBS). In one year, it has infected over 500,000 people (suspected and confirmed cases) in 40 countries and territories in the Americas. Along with recent epidemics of dengue (DENV) and chikungunya virus (CHIKV), which are also transmitted by Aedes aegypti and Ae. albopictus mosquitoes, the emergence of ZIKV suggests an ongoing intensification of environmental and social factors that have given rise to a new

Temperament and character dimensions in patients with social phobia: patterns of change following treatments?

The aim of this study was to examine Temperament and Character Inventory (TCI) profiles in patients with social phobia (DSM-IV) and to outline patterns of change following intensive group cognitive therapy (IGCT), individual cognitive therapy (ICT) and treatment as usual (TAU). One hundred patients recruited by advertisements in local papers were randomized to IGCT, ICT and TAU. Patients (n=59) who completed diagnostic evaluation and TCI assessments at baseline and 1-year follow-up were examined in this study. Patients differed from healthy controls in novelty seeking (NS), harm avoidance (HA)

Social change and HIV in the former USSR: the making of a new epidemic.

This paper describes the development of the recent HIV epidemic in countries of the former Soviet Union. It explores the socio-political and economic roots of an injection-drug-driven HIV epidemic associated with a drug culture that facilitates HIV transmission. This review, based on many unpublished reports, studies and field notes, discusses the new social and health context in which the epidemic is developing. The evidence of a growing number of drug users in the region is discussed and drug injection behaviour described. The authors present selected data on the heterosexual transmission of

Social Media as a Tool for Public Health: Reviewing the Use of Social Media for Disease Surveillance, Behavioral Change, and Misinformation Control.

Social media has transformed public health communication from a one-sided approach to a more interactive model, facilitating discussions on symptoms, treatments, and personal experiences among patients and caregivers, often without health professionals' involvement. Public health agencies recognised social media's potential for cost-effective, rapid outreach and real-time feedback, influencing health perceptions and behaviors. However, this platform also risks amplifying misinformation and conflicting narratives. Beyond communication, social media supports disease surveillance, influences heal

Pain-Related Social and Behavioral Changes: a Complex Interplay.

PURPOSE OF REVIEW: Behavioral lifestyle factors such as physical activity, stress, sleep, and nutrition are increasingly recognized as essential contributors to chronic pain. Their influence on chronic pain highlights its widespread, modifiable nature, affecting large population segments. This reinforces chronic pain as a significant public health issue and its socioeconomic impact and need for population-level prevention strategies. Pain is inherently subjective, and pain research traditionally relies on the self-reported pain score as a common primary outcome. This provides an incomplete mea

Changes in social reward across adolescence in male mice.

In humans, adolescence is a time of dynamic behavioral and emotional changes, including a transient decrease in affect associated with being among family members. It is not clear if a similar change occurs in rodent species used to model human psychiatric disorders. Here, we investigated the developmental profile of the rewarding value of interactions with siblings across adolescence in male mice, using the social conditioned place preference task. We found that the reward value of social interactions followed a similar course to that in humans: high in early adolescence, it decreased in mid-a

Coping with life changes--a preventive social work approach.

Life changes requiring substantial social readjustment were utilized to identify a population presumed to be at risk. Respondents who incurred two or more life changes, e.g., death (family member or close friend), divorce, separation, loss of work, incapacitating illness of or accident to self or close family member, imprisonment and/or retirement, in the previous 6 weeks to 1 year and who had not received formal treatment were invited to the intervention. Intervention consisted of cognitive and affective measures utilizing didactic and small-group dynamics. Substantial verbal and nonverbal su

Neuroendocrine changes and natriuresis in response to social stress in rats.

Sympathetic activation is detected by the tachycardic, hypertensive and hyperthermic responses during social conflicts in rodents and primates. Sympathetic nervous system activation promoting sodium retention has long been recognized to play a significant role in the development and maintenance of salt-sensitive hypertension. The objective was to investigate neuroendocrine activation and renal sodium excretion in response to chronic social stress. Male Wistar rats were subjected to social stress in accordance with the resident-intruder paradigm. Intruder rats were subjected to social confronta

Changes in self-perception during treatment of social phobia.

Ninety individuals with social phobia were randomly assigned to a waitlist control group, a cognitive-behavioral therapy group, or an exposure therapy group without explicit cognitive intervention. Two independent raters classified more than 2,000 thoughts that were reported by participants while anticipating socially stressful situations at pretest and posttest. Each thought was classified on the basis of its valence (positive, negative, or neutral) and attentional focus (self or other). The 2 treatments demonstrated a greater reduction in the frequency of negative self-focused thoughts than

Changing social factors and their long-term implications for health.

This paper presents findings and arguments to show the power of social factors to affect health at the individual and at the national level. Social factors most strongly and negatively associated with health, at both levels, are those that indicate disorganisation and disruption, perceived helplessness and lack of support, low educational attainment, and poverty. Adverse changes in these social factors and their negative effects on health have been observed in many studies. When such adverse changes affect the lives and health of children, and those who will become parents, they affect the pre

Analysis of semen in a constantly changing social context of medicine.

Semen analysis is one of the most valuable diagnostic methods that play a critical role in andrology. The introduction of computer-assisted methods of human semen analysis [6], in vitro fertilization, and other auxiliary methodologies [4] has greatly enhanced the expectations of infertile couples in having a baby. However, routine semen analysis plays a significant role in an infertility clinic, particularly in developing countries. Standardization of routine semen analysis therefore becomes the key issue in laboratories involved in such analysis. Apart from that, semen analyses carried out in

Generating Collective Social Safety in Times of Political Change: The Motivating Effects of Inexplicable Behavior.

A model of the generation of collective safety in social connection is proposed. This model posits that not being able to make sense of the behavior of others functions as an alert that motivates people who feel more vulnerable to the actions of societal collectives to find compensatory reason to trust in others. In two separate studies, participants in the United Kingdom and participants in the United States completed surveys the day before, and after, the 2024 general/federal elections. Preregistered moderated mediation analyses revealed that when family/friends behaved more (vs. less) inexp

Brief Report: Evaluating the Brief Observation of Social Communication Change (BOSCC) Scores Between Interaction Partners.

PURPOSE: This study examined whether the Brief Observation of Social Communication Change (BOSCC) yields consistent scores when administered by parents versus professionals within the same home environment. METHOD: Forty-one toddlers (73% male; mean age 28.2 months) at elevated likelihood for autism spectrum disorder completed two BOSCC sessions at home: one parent-led and one professional-led, following identical procedures. The domains, Social Communication (SC), Restricted and Repetitive Behaviours (RRB), and Other Abnormal Behaviours (OAB), were scored by independent coders. Scores were c

Enacting desired change in the present: Explaining prefigurative collective action during Chile's 2019 social explosion.

Many contemporary movements confront existing power structures while experimenting with alternative social relations-a dynamic often discussed as prefigurative politics. Yet social psychology has prioritized explaining why people participate over examining what unfolds through collective action. This study examines how 16 participants made sense of their participation in Chile's 2019 social explosion. Using reflexive thematic analysis of in-depth interviews, informed by the elaborated social identity model, we examine whether aspects of their involvement were understood in prefigurative terms

Integrating social data and engineering solutions for developing resilient water infrastructure against coastal climate change.

This study combines responses from a social survey with compound flood modeling in a marginalized coastal community to assess implementation of green infrastructure, such as rain barrels and rain gardens, in a city scale. This research focuses on the City of Imperial Beach, CA, which is an underserved coastal community located near the border with Mexico. A principal objective of the present research was analyzing social survey responses and the public's perceptions to estimate the extent to which decentralized water infrastructure might be accepted by and feasible for the target underserved c
