Stratified cities, unequal education: social class, segregation, and educational trajectories in metropolitan Bogotá.

INTRODUCTION: Education in Latin America operates within deeply stratified socio-spatial contexts. Despite extensive research on educational inequality, a critical gap persists in understanding how multidimensional social class - structured through economic, cultural, and social capital - interacts with residential and school segregation to produce differentiated educational trajectories across the full schooling cycle. Drawing on Bourdieusian field theory, this study examines metropolitan Bogotá as a paradigmatic case of a highly stratified Latin American metropolis in which class and territo

Ethnicity, social class and hostility: effects on in vivo beta-adrenergic receptor responsiveness.

Little is known about the potential influences of social and psychosocial variables in accounting for ethnic differences in the beta-adrenergic receptor. We examined the effects of ethnicity, social class, and other variables on an in vivo marker of beta-adrenergic receptor responsiveness (Chronotropic 25 Dose, CD(25)) for 224 African-Americans and Caucasian-Americans. Social class was determined using the clinician-rated Hollingshead two-factor index. The Cook-Medley hostility and Buss-Durkee assaultiveness subscales were administered to a subset of subjects. Results indicated that African-Am

Mortality and social class in New Zealand. III: male mortality by ethnic group.

Social class differences in male mortality in New Zealand were investigated separately for Maori, Pacific Island and other New Zealand males aged 15-64. All three groups displayed strong social class mortality gradients but, for each class, the Maori mortality rates were approximately 50% higher than the rates for the "other" category, while the Pacific Islander rates generally occupied an intermediate position. The Maori mortality rates were particularly high for the disease groupings of respiratory diseases, infectious diseases, genito-urinary diseases, endocrine, nutritional and metabolic d

Social class, ethnicity and attendance for antenatal care in the United Kingdom: a systematic review.

BACKGROUND: Evidence from outside the United Kingdom points to several socio-demographic factors associated with late initiation of antenatal care or fewer antenatal visits, but it is not clear how generalizable these studies are to the UK context. This systematic review addresses the question of whether there are social or ethnic inequalities in attendance for antenatal care in the United Kingdom. METHODS: We identified and reviewed UK studies assessing attendance for antenatal care according to any measure of social class, social deprivation or ethnicity. A wide range of electronic database

Social Representations of People with Gambling Problems: The Influence of Prevention Classes on Non-gamblers.

In the present study, we examine the impact of prevention classes on non-gambling males. Specifically, we measure whether attending a prevention class influences how non-gambling participants perceive people who gamble problematically. Participants (N = 545) were all lifetime non-gamblers, and were all conscripts attending a two-day military recruitment program. On the first day participants either attended or did not attend a gambling prevention class. On the second day, they all completed a questionnaire that contained questions on how they perceived people who gamble problematically. Result

Social mobility and class segregation in personal networks over time: evidence from longitudinal data.

This study examines how class-based network homogeneity evolves over time and whether intragenerational social mobility reshapes personal network composition in Chile. Drawing on four waves of longitudinal data from the Chilean Longitudinal Social Survey (ELSOC, 2016-2023), we assess the extent to which class stability and different forms of social mobility-conjunctural, structural, and cumulative-influence the degree of class homogeneity in personal networks. We use the position generator instrument to measure cross-class social ties across 13 occupations, calculating the proportion of ties b

Dynamic friendship processes related to learning interest: Moderating by class-level social-emotional competency.

BACKGROUND: Learning interest is an intrinsic motivation that dynamically interacts with friendships. Students alter their learning interests to assimilate with their friends and actively establish friendships on the basis of similar interests. These processes do not operate in isolation but rather in the broader peer context. Class-level social-emotional competency (SEC) is a contextual characteristic that influences students' social and learning processes. AIMS: This study used reading and mathematics as examples to examine the moderating role of class-level SEC in the friendship influence

Social class stigma and poorer health behaviors: Evidence from the eating in America study.

Although the association between objective markers of low socioeconomic status (SES) and poor health is well established, one underexamined possibility is that over and above objective SES, social class stigma-experiences and anticipation of discrimination based on social class-might undermine people's ability to engage in healthy behaviors. Participants (N = 2022) were recruited between December 2019 and January 2020 via a national Qualtrics panel that was census-matched to the U.S. population in age, gender, income, race/ethnicity, and census region. Participants completed measures of class

Examining mental health practitioners' perceptions of clients based on social class and sexual orientation.

There is negligible research exploring mental health clinicians' perceptions of clients based upon client social class and sexual orientation (McGarrity, 2014; Whitcomb & Walinsky, 2013). The purpose of this study was to examine how licensed mental health clinicians' perceptions of clients were influenced by a hypothetical client's social class and sexual orientation using a 2 (lower social class vs. higher social class) × 2 (lesbian vs. straight) quasi-experimental vignette-based design. Results from 257 practitioners demonstrated that the hypothetical client portrayed in the video was rated

Inequalities in healthy life expectancy by social class and area type: England, 2001-03.

BACKGROUND: Healthy life expectancy (HLE) is an important indicator which combines longevity with health status. This article examines inequalities in HLE by socio-economic position in England, and between Local Authorities (LAs) in the deprived 'Spearhead group' and other LAs. METHODS: Census and vital event data available from the ONS Longitudinal Study were used to calculate estimates of HLE based on general health status for each Registrar General's Social Class (RGSC) in 2001-03, in England as a whole and within the 'Spearhead group' and non-Spearhead LAs. RESULTS: A predominantly linea

Relationship between occupation, social class and time taken off work following a whiplash injury.

INTRODUCTION: Little has been published about occupational and social factors in relation to time off work following a whiplash injury. PATIENTS AND METHODS: We analysed 800 medicolegal case sheets from a consultant orthopaedic surgeon's practice. RESULTS: Of those injured, 596 were working and 204 were unemployed or retired. The working group was further analysed. Severity of injury was estimated by analysing velocity of injury combined with vehicular damage. Mean time off work for a minor injury was 10.6 days, moderate 12.1 days, severe 13.8, and very severe 24.9 (P < 0.05). Looking at wor

Racial/Ethnic and social class differences in preventive care practices among persons with diabetes.

BACKGROUND: Diabetes is the sixth leading cause of death in the United States. Persons with diabetes are at increased risk for serious complications including CVD, stroke, retinopathy, amputation, and nephropathy. Minorities have the highest incidence and prevalence of diabetes and related complications compared to other racial groups. Preventive care practices such as smoking cessation, eye examinations, feet examinations, and yearly checkups can prevent or delay the incidence and progression of diabetes related complications. The purpose of this study was to examine racial/ethnic differences

Economic inequality, working-class power, social capital, and cause-specific mortality in wealthy countries.

This study tests two propositions from Navarro's critique of the social capital literature: that social capital's importance has been exaggerated and that class-related political factors, absent from social epidemiology and public health, might be key determinants of population health. The authors estimate cross-sectional associations between economic inequality, working-class power, and social capital and life expectancy, self-rated health, low birth weight, and age- and cause-specific mortality in 16 wealthy countries. Of all the health outcomes, the five variables related to birth and infan

Patterns of social relationships among community-dwelling older adults in Japan: latent class analysis.

BACKGROUND: Social relationships may be the key to successful aging among older adults. However, little is known about the variability of social relationships among community-dwelling older people. This study aimed to describe the patterns of social relationships and examine the differences in sociodemographic characteristics and mental and physical health status among these patterns. METHODS: We obtained the data from a questionnaire survey in 2017 for older adults aged 65 and above who lived in a suburban area in Japan. The Index of Social Interaction (ISI) was used to evaluate social relat

Inequalities in low birth weight: parental social class, area deprivation, and "lone mother" status.

OBJECTIVE: To describe the extent of socioeconomic inequalities in low birth weight. To assess the relative benefits of measuring socioeconomic status by individual occupation, socioeconomic deprivation status of area of residence, or both, for describing inequalities and targeting resources. DESIGN: Analysis of birth registrations by registration status: joint compared with sole registrants ("lone mothers"), routinely recorded parental occupation (father's for joint registrants), and census derived enumeration district (ED) deprivation. SETTING: England and Wales, 1986-92. SUBJECTS: 471,41

Mortality and social class in New Zealand II: male mortality by major disease groupings.

Social class differences in male mortality in New Zealand were investigated for each major disease grouping. The patterns found were similar to those for England and Wales with the lower social classes having mortality rates significantly higher than those of the upper social classes for each major cause of death. The strongest social class mortality gradients were found for deaths from accidents, poisonings and violence; diseases of the respiratory system; endocrine, nutritional and metabolic diseases; diseases of the genito-urinary system; and diseases of the digestive system. The gradients

The associations between optimism, personal growth initiative and the latent classes of social media addiction.

INTRODUCTION: Most previous studies have explored the risk antecedents of social media addiction, while few studies have focused on the protective factors that may decrease the risk of this behavioral disorder. By using a person-centered method, the current study focused on the effects of two protective factors (optimism and personal growth initiative) on the latent classes of social media addiction. METHODS: 552 college students (248 females) participated in the current study, Mplus 8.3 software was adopted to conduct the latent class analysis. RESULTS: The results revealed that based on th

Prevalence of palatine tonsilloliths in Dominican patients of varying social classes treated in university clinics.

The relevance of tonsils lies not only in local but also in systemic immunity. One of the most common ailments afflicting the tonsils are palatine tonsilloliths (PT), dystrophic calcifications found in the tonsillar crypts. PT prevalence reports have been conducted for Caucasian and Asian patients, but not for black patients. The aim of this cross-sectional study is to gauge the prevalence of PT in patients who sought treatment at two university clinics in the Dominican Republic, and to analyze any links with the race of patients. Two hundred and nine consecutive patients attending the dental
