Income inequality and comorbid overweight/obesity and depression among a large sample of Canadian secondary school students: The mediator effect of social cohesion.

BACKGROUND: Comorbid overweight/obesity (OWO) and depression is emerging as a public health problem among adolescents. Income inequality is a structural determinant of health that independently increases the risk for both OWO and depression among youth. However, no study has examined the association between income inequality and comorbid OWO and depression or tested potential mechanisms involved. We aimed to identify the association between income inequality and comorbid OWO and depression and to test whether social cohesion mediates this relationship. METHODS: We used data from the 2018-2019

Differential associations between Social Anxiety Disorder, family cohesion, and suicidality across racial/ethnic groups: Findings from the National Comorbidity Survey-Adolescent (NCS-A).

The proposed research seeks to introduce a novel model relating Social Anxiety Disorder (SAD) and suicide outcomes (i.e., passive suicidal ideation, active suicidal ideation, and suicide attempts) in diverse adolescents. This model posits that family cohesion is one pathway by which suicide risk is increased for socially anxious youth, and predicts that the relationships between these variables may be of different strength in Latino and White subgroups and across gender. Data from a sample of Latino (n=1922) and non-Hispanic White (hereafter referred to as White throughout) (n=5648) male and f

Validation of French and German versions of a Perceived Neighborhood Social Cohesion Questionnaire among young Swiss males, and its relationship with substance use.

This study main purpose was the validation of both French and German versions of a Perceived Neighborhood Social Cohesion Questionnaire. The sample group comprised 5065 Swiss men from the "Cohort Study on Substance Use Risk Factors." Multigroup Confirmatory factor analysis showed that a three-factor model fits the data well, which substantiates the generalizability of Perceived Neighborhood Social Cohesion Questionnaire factor structure, regardless of the language. The Perceived Neighborhood Social Cohesion Questionnaire demonstrated excellent homogeneity (α = 95) and split-half reliability (r

Living Alone or With Others and Depressive Symptoms, and Effect Modification by Residential Social Cohesion Among Older Adults in Japan: The JAGES Longitudinal Study.

BACKGROUND: There is little longitudinal evidence on the impact of specific living arrangements (ie, who individuals live with) on mental health among older adults, and no studies have examined the modifying effect of residential social cohesion level on this association. We aimed to examine the association between living arrangements and depressive symptoms and whether this association varies with residential neighborhood social cohesion level among 19,656 men and 22,513 women aged 65 years and older in Japan. METHODS: We analyzed the association between baseline living arrangements in 2010

Does perceived social cohesion moderate the effect of parental stressors on depressive symptoms? A longitudinal, multi-level analysis before and during the COVID-19 pandemic.

BACKGROUND: Perceived social cohesion (PSC) is a protective factor for mental health. Yet, evidence on social mechanisms influencing mental health is scarce. AIMS: We examined the moderating role of PSC between parental stressors and depressive symptoms before and during the COVID-19 pandemic. METHODS: We performed a multilevel moderated linear regression analysis using German Socio-Economic Panel (G-SOEP) data to investigate the interaction of PSC in 2018 and in 2020 with parental stressors (having pre-school-aged child(-ren), concerns about COVID-19 infection, financial insecurity, working

Characterizing social cohesion and gender identity as risk determinants of HIV among cisgender men who have sex with men and transgender women in Côte d'Ivoire.

PURPOSE: HIV prevalence has been previously estimated among cisgender men who have sex with men (MSM) in Côte d'Ivoire; however, limited data exist relating to the role of social cohesion and gender identity within this population. This study aims to examine these factors as risk determinants of HIV among MSM in Côte d'Ivoire. METHODS: We conducted a cross-sectional study using respondent-driven sampling for recruitment with a structured sociobehavioral instrument and testing for HIV. After respondent-driven sampling adjustment, chi-squared tests and bivariate logistic regression and multivar

Lost connection? Comparing group cohesion and treatment outcomes between videoconference and in-person cognitive behavioural group therapy for social anxiety disorder and other anxiety disorders.

BACKGROUND: One of the most effective treatments for social anxiety disorder (SAD) is cognitive behavioural therapy (CBT). Prior research indicates group cohesion is connected to treatment success in group CBT for SAD (CBGT). Videoconference CBGT delivery is now common following the COVID-19 pandemic; however, research investigating treatment outcomes and group cohesion in videoconference CBGT for SAD is limited. AIMS: The present study aimed to compare group cohesion in videoconference CBGT for SAD to group cohesion in both in-person CBGT for SAD and videoconference CBGT for other anxiety an

Learning to do well or learning to do good? Estimating the effects of schooling on civic engagement, social cohesion, and labor market outcomes in the presence of endowments.

Although some point to the large effects of schooling on civic engagement (usually measured in terms of volunteering and participation in civic organizations) and social cohesion (usually measured in terms of social networks and relationship quality), the effects of schooling on social outcomes have not been estimated with the same rigor as the effects of schooling on labor-market outcomes, such as earnings. In particular, previous research has failed to consider (i) the many potential and often unobserved confounding factors ("endowments") influencing both schooling and social outcomes, inclu

Addressing Barriers to Health Care Access and Their Impact on Social Cohesion Among Rohingya Refugees and Host Community in Cox's Bazar, Bangladesh: Protocol for a Qualitative Study.

BACKGROUND: Access to health care remains a critical issue in protracted forced displacement contexts globally. In Cox's Bazar, Bangladesh, the co-existence of Rohingya refugees and the host community for many years has generated complex health care dynamics. While humanitarian interventions have increased service availability for refugees, barriers still persist, and disparities in health care access between refugees and host populations exist. OBJECTIVE: This study aims to understand the experiences and coping strategies of refugees, host community members, and health care providers involve

Why cultural ecosystem services matter most: Exploring the pathways linking greenspaces and mental health in a low-income country.

Exposure to urban greenspaces promotes a variety of mental health benefits. However, much of the evidence for these benefits is biased towards high-income countries. In contrast, urban areas in low-income settings that have the highest rates of urbanisation remain understudied. Given the increasing burden of mental ill-health associated with urbanisation in low- and middle-income countries (LMICs), there is a clear need to better understand the role urban greenspaces play in mitigating mental ill-health. Here we use a novel combination of research methods (participatory video, focus groups and

Are early life neighbourhood contexts associated with later harsh parenting? Evidence from a population-based birth cohort study in Brazil.

BACKGROUND: There is limited research on how neighbourhoods influence harsh and abusive parenting practices in the home, particularly in low and middle-income countries. OBJECTIVE: We investigated associations between caregiver-perceived neighbourhood characteristics (community violence and social cohesion) and later harsh parenting practices. Additionally, we examined whether higher levels of social cohesion would mitigate the association between neighbourhood violence and harsh parenting. PARTICIPANTS AND SETTING: Data came from 3731 child-mother dyads enrolled in the 2015 Pelotas (Brazil)

Psychological sense of community, self-rated health and quality of life among older adults in Puerto Rico two years after Hurricane María.

Older adults who experience natural disasters are at risk for immediate and longer-term negative health outcomes and diminished quality of life (QOL), in part due to disruptions to social relationships and protections. We use a risk and resilience framework to examine the protective effects of psychological sense of community (PSOC) on self-rated health (SRH) and QOL for older adults in Puerto Rico 2 years after the devastation of Hurricane María in 2017. Between September 2019 and January 2020, we conducted face-to-face interviews with a nonprobability sample of 154 community-dwelling adults

Juggling with theory, evidence, practice, and real-world circumstances: Development of a complex community intervention to increase physical activity in inactive adults aged 50 years and older - The Move for Life Study.

Despite well-known benefits of physical activity, in Ireland only 38 % of older adults are sufficiently active. Behavioural interventions are rarely developed systematically and, when reported, inadequate description often becomes a barrier for subsequent replication and scalability. In this article, we describe the development and characteristics of Move for Life, an intervention to reach and help inactive adults aged 50 years and older increase their physical activity. It was designed to fit within existing group-based structured physical activity programmes run by Local Sports Partnerships,

Latent Transitions of Census-level Deprivation and Network Analysis of Conduct Problem Behaviours.

Conduct problems are more prevalent in neighbourhoods that have a vulnerable structure (e.g., high neighbourhood-level deprivation) and disarranged interpersonal characteristics (e.g., low social cohesion and informal social control at the neighbourhood level). However, as an indicator of neighbourhood structure, neighbourhood deprivation has typically not been assessed longitudinally and solely based on neighbourhood-level socioeconomic status rather than a wide variety of census-level deprivation indicators. Also, few studies have examined which CD behaviours (e.g., stealing) interplay with

Social Capital, Perceived Discrimination, and Depressive Symptoms Among Older Adults Across Three Racial/Ethnic Groups.

INTRODUCTION: Older adults perceive discrimination across interpersonal, community, and structural levels, contributing to a wide range of adverse health outcomes. The present study investigated the racial/ethnic differences in perceived discrimination, social capital, and depressive symptoms, and the direct associations of perceived discrimination and social capital with depressive symptoms, as well as the moderating role of social capital, among community-dwelling older adults from different racial and ethnic backgrounds.
