[Psychological findings in a group of patients with perioral dermatitis].

Female patients suffering from perioral dermatitis were given the Raven Test, two personality inventories (MMPI and FPI) and the Rorschach Test. The results of these four tests show statistically significant differences from controls, indicating emotional immaturity combined with high intelligence level, inability to achieve satisfactory interpersonal relationships contrasting with an overemphasis upon social conformity, and a tendency to 'hysteriform' reactions.

Marijuana use motives and social anxiety among marijuana-using young adults.

Given the high rates of co-occurring marijuana use and social anxiety, the present investigation examined the relations among marijuana use motives, marijuana use and problems, and social anxiety in 159 (54.7% female) young adults (M(age)=18.74, SD=1.20). As expected, after covarying for a number of variables related to both marijuana use and social anxiety (e.g. gender, alcohol use problems, anxiety sensitivity), social anxiety predicted greater numbers of marijuana use problems. Interestingly, social anxiety was not related to marijuana use frequency. Also consistent with prediction, social

Shared Friend Criteria Modulate Aesthetic Judgment of Faces and Paintings but Not Moral Beauty.

Aesthetic preferences are shaped by social context, yet the influence of close peers' standards across different aesthetic domains remains unclear. This study investigated whether friends' aesthetic criteria modulate individuals' judgments of faces, paintings, and moral beauty using a modified social conformity paradigm across three experiments. Results showed that individuals' aesthetic judgments of faces and paintings were significantly influenced by their friends' ratings, shifting systematically toward peer evaluations. In contrast, judgments of moral beauty were largely unaffected by peer

Mental health help-seeking among Korean men: the influence of stigma, masculine norms, and face.

BACKGROUND: Previous studies have found that Asians and men are more susceptible to the stigma and stereotypes associated with mental illness. This social perception makes it difficult for Korean men to seek professional psychological help even when they desperately need it. The primary objectives of this study were to investigate barriers to mental health help-seeking among Korean men and to identify the role of sociocultural factors. METHODS: A total of 341 Korean men aged 19 to 59 years participated in an online survey, which included questionnaires on loss of face, self-stigma of seeking

Posttraumatic stress and alcohol use among Hispanic/Latina survivors of interpersonal trauma: Associations with anxiety sensitivity and distress tolerance.

OBJECTIVE: Hispanic/Latina students experience elevated rates of binge drinking, interpersonal trauma, and posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD) symptoms. Research has indicated anxiety sensitivity (AS; i.e., fear of anxiety-related bodily sensations) and distress tolerance (DT; i.e., ability to tolerate negative emotional states) are modifiable psychological mechanisms related to alcohol use and PTSD symptoms. However, a dearth of literature has focused on factors that may account for associations between alcohol use and PTSD among Hispanic/Latina students. METHOD: The project examined, among

The role of drinking motives in social anxiety and alcohol use.

Although social anxiety and problem drinking commonly co-occur, the relationship between social anxiety and drinking among college students is not well understood. The current study examined the relationship between drinking motives, or reasons for drinking, and social anxiety in 239 volunteers. Contrary to hypotheses, high (n=83), moderate (n=90), and low (n=66) social anxiety groups did not differ in endorsement of coping and conformity drinking motives. Further, social anxiety was negatively related to weekly alcohol use and unrelated to alcohol-related problems. Post hoc hierarchical multi

Susceptibility to social influence in adults with Asperger's syndrome: a research note.

Asch's line judgement task was used to compare the susceptibility to social influence of adults with Asperger's syndrome with that of two groups of controls one of which was matched on verbal IQ. There was no overall difference between the three groups' mean rate of conformity but in contrast to both groups of controls, the subjects with Asperger's syndrome were significantly more likely to adopt a consistently conforming or nonconforming strategy. There were also significant differences between the groups in their interaction with the other participants. The implications of the findings are d

Gender stereotype conformity and age as determinants of preschoolers' injury-risk behaviors.

Unintentional injuries continue to be a serious public-health problem for children and are higher for boys than for girls, from infancy through adulthood. Literature on differential socialization concerning risky behaviors and gender stereotypes suggests that sex differences in unintentional injuries could be explained by children's differential feedback to social pressure, leading to behaviors which conform to masculine and feminine stereotypes. We made the prediction that boys' and girls' conformity with masculine stereotypes influences injury-risk behaviors among preschoolers. Masculinity s

[Misanthropic effects of civilization].

Increase of cool distance in social relations entails not only higher consciousness of human being but also a shift from primary ingenuous emotional spontaneity of behavior to intellectually controlled thinking and striving. With progress of civilisation, social conformity is dissolving. That causes a clash between contradictory impulses: unruly urge for freedom and independence on the one hand, and insatiable yearning for harmonic community, that means, for imperturbable warm-hearted human relations on the other. In the same measure as modern men are growing unable to endure those restriction

Basic psychological need satisfaction and drinking motives: The protective role of autonomy and competence needs among college students of Mexican descent.

OBJECTIVE: Research on basic psychological needs satisfaction (BPN) and heavy episodic drinking (HED) has produced mixed findings, highlighting the need to clarify how BPN relates to drinking motives, which are direct predictors of alcohol use. Cultural factors, including ethnic identity, may also shape drinking motives among Hispanic young adults. This study examined associations among BPN satisfaction, ethnic identity, drinking motives, HED, and alcohol related consequences in undergraduates of Mexican descent. METHODS: Undergraduate students (n = 443; Mage = 22.6, SD = 5.09; 67.9% female;

Examining changes in drinking motives and their influence on drinking behaviors among heavy drinkers during their first year of college.

Drinking motives are robustly related to alcohol use behavior from adolescence through young adulthood. Yet, examination of changes in motives during the first year of college, a transitional time associated with both onset of and increases in heavy drinking has been understudied. We examined (a) whether drinking motives change, (b) time-varying effects of motives on alcohol use and consequences, and (c) change in the strength of the association between motives and use and motives and consequences over the first year of college. A sample of 121 heavy drinking first-year students (50% female, 5

Daily-Level Drinking Motives as Predictors of Transdermal Alcohol Concentration and Alcohol-Induced Blackouts Among Young Adults.

BACKGROUND: Alcohol use is necessary-but not sufficient-for understanding why individuals experience an alcohol-induced blackout (AIB). Drinking motives are one of the most proximal risk factors for alcohol use. This study conducts a comprehensive within-person examination of AIBs predicted by prospective daily reports of drinking motives and alcohol use measured using a transdermal alcohol concentration (TAC) biosensor. METHODS: Participants were young adults who engaged in risky drinking and experienced at least 1 AIB in the past 3-months (N = 169, Mage = 20.8, 53% female, 87% White, 10% Hi

Social capital predicts corruption risk in towns.

Corruption is a social plague: gains accrue to small groups, while its costs are borne by everyone. Significant variation in its level between and within countries suggests a relationship between social structure and the prevalence of corruption, yet, large-scale empirical studies thereof have been missing due to lack of data. In this paper, we relate the structural characteristics of social capital of settlements with corruption in their local governments. Using datasets from Hungary, we quantify corruption risk by suppressed competition and lack of transparency in the settlement's awarded pu

The influence of social norms on safety practices among warehouse employees: Workplace behavior as a moderator.

INTRODUCTION AND METHOD: Employing an explanatory sequential mixed-methods design, data were collected from 340 survey respondents and 35 interviewees across logistics facilities. Quantitative analysis using moderated multiple regression revealed that social norms (β = 0.19, p = 0.002) and workplace behavior (β = 0.48, p < 0.001) significantly predict safety practices. However, workplace behavior did not moderate this relationship (p = 0.329). RESULTS: Qualitative findings elucidated this null effect, highlighting dominant operational logics where productivity pressures and conformity overrid

The role of sport norms and organizational pressure on coaches' use of interpersonal violence: The mediating role of perceived instrumental effects of violence.

Interpersonal violence (IV) in sport is a pervasive issue that threatens athletes' physical, social, and psychological well-being. Sociological theories suggest that organisational pressure and adherence to sport norms, such as traditional masculinity and sport ethic, may contribute to coaches' beliefs in the instrumental benefits of violence, leading to the perpetration of IV. Despite prior research into these risk factors, no study has simultaneously examined individual, organisational, and societal factors influencing coaches' use of IV. This study aimed to explore how coaches' beliefs rega

The mediating role of substance use motives in the relationship between personality dimensions and alcohol and drug use in adolescents and young adults with mild intellectual disabilities.

Adolescents and young adults with mild intellectual disabilities or borderline intellectual functioning (MID-BIF) are a high-risk group for developing substance use disorders. The aim of this study was to gain a better understanding of the mechanisms that underlie substance use in this particular population. We tested the mediating role of substance use motives in the relationship between personality dimensions and substance use-related outcomes. Self-reported data on substance use risk personality dimensions (i.e., sensation seeking, impulsivity, anxiety sensitivity, and negative thinking), s

Falling in line: Children's gender conformity after feedback signaling gender atypicality.

Gender conformity powerfully shapes children's development, yet little experimental work has investigated the antecedents of this conformity. Here, we experimentally tested whether and how threats to children's felt gender typicality-the extent to which they feel typical of their gender group-elicit conformity and whether these effects vary by age and gender. We randomly assigned 147 children ages 5-10 years (70 girls; 79 racial/ethnic minority) to receive feedback suggesting their performance was gender-atypical (threat) or gender-typical (affirmation) on a pair of "gender knowledge games." The Relationship Between Pain Severity and Alcohol Use Among School-Aged Children and Adolescents: The Moderating Role of Drinking Motives.

OBJECTIVE: Evidence from adult samples suggests a co-occurrence between pain and alcohol abuse. However, studies in adolescents are scarce and results are inconsistent, with some studies observing heightened and others observing reduced alcohol consumption in adolescents suffering from pain. We hypothesized that in adolescents the association between pain and alcohol use will be moderated by drinking motives. METHODS: Data from a large representative sample of Flemish school children and adolescents (N = 10,650, 50.8% boys, age range = 10-21 years, Mage = 14.33 years) were collected as part o

Exploring the motives for drinking less alcohol and attitudes towards abstinence in individuals with low-to-moderate alcohol use - a mixed-methods study.

BACKGROUND: Extensive evidence links alcohol to increased morbidity and mortality, leading to recommendations to reduce drinking, regardless of the amount consumed. We aimed to explore the motives for (not) drinking alcohol in low-to-moderate drinkers because of their relevance for prevention strategies. METHODS: Using a mixed-methods design, we first analyzed longitudinal self-report data from 540 low-to-moderate drinkers from general population in Germany who participated in a randomized controlled trial. Over a period of three years, trajectories of alcohol use were examined using latent c
