The Algorithmic Niche: an Integrative Framework for the Memetic Mind in Cultural Evolution.

The internet meme, a multimodal artifact of digital communication, has become a potent force in shaping contemporary culture, politics, and social behavior. Existing analyses have often examined memes through discrete lenses of cognitive psychology, cultural studies, or computer science. This review argues for a more profound, integrative framework grounded in the Extended Evolutionary Synthesis (EES). It posits that the societal influence of internet memes is best understood as a manifestation of high-speed cultural evolution operating within a technologically constructed digital niche. This

Tinkering with social tinkering.

Our commentators have broadly welcomed the notion of social tinkering, while also offering a range of suggestions, refinements, and potential challenges. In our response, we clarify the concept of social tinkering, sharpen our account of the six stages of cultural evolution, consider whether additional mechanisms are needed to explain the emergence of cultural complexity, and explore a range of possible extensions to the social tinkering framework. We conclude by discussing broader implications and future directions for this research program, including a reconsideration of Rogers' paradox.

Ten-year follow-up of social functioning and behaviour problems in people with schizophrenia and related disorders.

BACKGROUND: In recent years, several variables in the course of schizophrenia and related psychotic disorders have been studied. However, an instrumental analysis of the evolution of social functioning and behaviour problems has scarcely been explored. AIM: To analyse the evolution of social functioning and behaviour problems and find any diagnosis or gender differences. METHOD: The Social Functioning Scale (SFS) and the Behaviour Problems Inventory (BPI) were administered in Stages I (2003-2007) and II (2014-2017) to 100 close relatives of patients under treatment at a Community Mental Heal

Hemimetabolous genomes reveal molecular basis of termite eusociality.

Around 150 million years ago, eusocial termites evolved from within the cockroaches, 50 million years before eusocial Hymenoptera, such as bees and ants, appeared. Here, we report the 2-Gb genome of the German cockroach, Blattella germanica, and the 1.3-Gb genome of the drywood termite Cryptotermes secundus. We show evolutionary signatures of termite eusociality by comparing the genomes and transcriptomes of three termites and the cockroach against the background of 16 other eusocial and non-eusocial insects. Dramatic adaptive changes in genes underlying the production and perception of pherom

How 8 years of social and individual learning interact to shape ecological competence in orangutans.

Cultural learning permeates human skill and knowledge acquisition. To understand its importance for nonhuman apes, we analyzed just under 7000 records of behavioral bouts of social and individual learning across wild orangutans' 8-year dependency period to assess their combined effects on ecological competence, which is crucial for independent survival. Social learning was five times more frequent than individual learning and influenced subsequent learning for hours. Immature orangutans varied substantially in their learning propensities, and those with heightened social and individual learnin

Beyond formal equivalence: research questions and explanatory function in group and multilevel selection theory.

The debate over group and multilevel selection remains central to evolutionary biology, particularly in explanations of cooperation and social evolution. A persistent issue is whether group- and multilevel-selection models and kin-selection formulations are formally equivalent, that is, whether they can represent the same evolutionary change under specified assumptions, and what follows from such equivalence for explanation. We conducted a systematic review and thematic synthesis of 94 model-centered studies, characterized by explanatory orientation, Research Question, multilevel selection I/I

Beyond nearsighted and directed: Varied sources of cultural change.

Chater and Christiansen claim that humans' cultural systems arise in an unplanned manner via social tinkering, a process that is nearsighted and directed. However, cultural change can be planned and farsighted, arbitrary and undirected, or anywhere in between. Focusing primarily on social tinkering may cause other important sources of cultural change to be overlooked.

Multilevel Organisation of Animal Sociality.

Multilevel societies (MLSs), stable nuclear social units within a larger collective encompassing multiple nested social levels, occur in several mammalian lineages. Their architectural complexity and size impose specific demands on their members requiring adaptive solutions in multiple domains. The functional significance of MLSs lies in their members being equipped to reap the benefits of multiple group sizes. Here, we propose a unifying terminology and operational definition of MLS. To identify new avenues for integrative research, we synthesise current literature on the selective pressures

Darwinian dynamics of depression.

Darwin's theory of sexual selection offers a challenge to psychology and psychiatry. We select each other, and have been doing so since social life first evolved. But who is selected and what happens to those who are not selected? What social structures have evolved to contain the unselected? What behaviours have evolved to manage the selection process? How do the selected relate to the unselected and what behaviours have evolved to manage this asymmetry in social relations? What mental states have evolved to characterize the selected and the unselected? These questions should be kept in mind

When is it socially acceptable to feel sick?

Disease is a ubiquitous and powerful evolutionary force. Hosts have evolved behavioural and physiological responses to disease that are associated with increased survival. Behavioural modifications, known as 'sickness behaviours', frequently involve symptoms such as lethargy, somnolence and anorexia. Current research has demonstrated that the social environment is a potent modulator of these behaviours: when conflicting social opportunities arise, animals can decrease or entirely forgo experiencing sickness symptoms. Here, I review how different social contexts, such as the presence of mates,

Evolutionary theory and social diversity are essential for understanding the developmental origins of human social cognition and attachment.

Bard et al. rightly call out Western-centric bias to champion Worldwide, in-Situ, Local and Diverse developmental research. Yet this inclusivity must be grounded in evolutionary theory to model development. Comparative evidence strengthens accounts of shared intentionality and attachment. Integrating within-species variation through WILD with between-species variation engaging evolutionary perspectives will offer more robust explanations of universal and diverse developmental pathways.

On the nature of grief: uncovering the evolutionary roots of loss across the animal realm.

Understanding grief in non-human animals poses conceptual and empirical challenges. Unlike humans, whose grief is readily identified through affective, cognitive and behavioural manifestations, recognizing it in other species is complicated by differences in expression and by anthropomorphic bias. Research on grief has taken several approaches. Observational studies in the ethological tradition have documented grief-like responses (withdrawal, vocalizations and changes in social interaction) across diverse taxa. Separation studies have shown that disrupting attachment produces depressive-like

Cooperative goals must be selected by groups before tinkering begins.

While the target paper's proposal dovetails nicely with prominent perspectives on cultural evolution, there are also substantial gaps. In the commentary, we will argue that the target paper's proposal does not adequately take the role of cooperative selection into account.

Now we see the violence inherent in the tinkering.

The concept of social tinkering is useful, but insufficient to explain the evolution of human cultural complexity due to its overemphasis on cooperative interactions. The importance of conflict, violence, and inequality in the evolution of complex cultures complicates the social tinkering hypothesis. Who gets to tinker, and what determines which products of that tinkering are selected?

Post-Pandemic Insomnia in Healthcare Workers: A Prospective Study including Sociodemographic, Occupational and Psychosocial Variables.

Background/Objectives: Previous research points to the prevalence of insomnia during the COVID-19 pandemic among healthcare workers (HCWs). However, longitudinal studies on its evolution, including the post-pandemic stage, are less abundant, with a special lack of research about possible psychosocial risk factors. The aim of the current study is to analyze the evolution of insomnia in Spanish HCWs from the beginning of the pandemic until two years later, examining the influence of sociodemographic, occupational and psychosocial variables. Methods: This was a prospective longitudinal design wit

Cultural transmission modes of music sampling traditions remain stable despite delocalization in the digital age.

Music sampling is a common practice among hip-hop and electronic producers that has played a critical role in the development of particular subgenres. Artists preferentially sample drum breaks, and previous studies have suggested that these may be culturally transmitted. With the advent of digital sampling technologies and social media the modes of cultural transmission may have shifted, and music communities may have become decoupled from geography. The aim of the current study was to determine whether drum breaks are culturally transmitted through musical collaboration networks, and to ident

From information free-riding to information sharing: how have humans solved the cooperative dilemma at the heart of cumulative cultural evolution?

Cumulative cultural evolution, where populations accumulate ever-improving knowledge, technologies and social customs, is arguably a unique feature of human sociality and responsible for our species' ecological dominance of the planet. However, at the heart of cumulative cultural evolution is a cooperative dilemma. Assuming asocial learning is more costly than social learning, social learners can act as 'information free-riders' by copying innovations from asocial learners without paying the cost. This cost asymmetry will reduce innovation, inhibiting cumulative culture. Innovators might respo

Synergistic cooperation promotes multicellular performance and unicellular free-rider persistence.

The evolution of multicellular life requires cooperation among cells, which can be undermined by intra-group selection for selfishness. Theory predicts that selection to avoid non-cooperators limits social interactions among non-relatives, yet previous evolution experiments suggest that intra-group conflict is an outcome, rather than a driver, of incipient multicellular life cycles. Here we report the evolution of multicellularity via two distinct mechanisms of group formation in the unicellular budding yeast Kluyveromyces lactis. Cells remain permanently attached following mitosis, giving ris

Socially guided individual learning mitigates the double-edged sword of pedagogy.

Social learning and innovation are fundamental processes in cultural evolution, yet their interaction remains poorly understood. Prior research suggests that inheriting social information reduces exploration. However, most studies have focused on the transmission of fully fledged solutions. Here, we investigate whether alternative types of information can facilitate cumulative cultural evolution without reducing exploration. Specifically, we conducted a pre-registered experiment with 400 adult participants comparing the inheritance of solutions with that of heuristics-simple rules that guide p

Diving back two hundred million years: yawn contagion in fish.

Yawning is a widespread and automatic behavior in vertebrates. Yawn contagion, responding with a yawn to others' yawns, helps synchronize motor activities, particularly in social animals, promoting coordination within groups. While primarily observed in social, endothermic species, yawn contagion remains unconfirmed in ectotherms. We discovered yawn contagion in zebrafish (Danio rerio). Using a deep learning model to distinguish yawning from breathing, we found that fish not only yawn but also "catch" yawns from others. The presence of yawn contagion in fish raises important evolutionary quest
