Co-designing digital nudges to promote gender equality and social inclusion among Arab youth: a mixed-methods study.

BACKGROUND: Digital nudges have been widely explored in privacy, health, and sustainability domains; however, little empirical work has co-designed culturally grounded nudges that address Gender Equality and Social Inclusion (GESI), especially in Arab contexts. This gap is particularly significant given the strong influence of cultural norms and socio-economic structures in Arab societies, which shape how GESI are perceived and enacted in digital spaces. This study presents a full co-design process that integrates behavioral insights and participant-led design activities to develop a digital-n

"I became a person again": Social inclusion and participation experiences of Ethiopian women post-obstetric fistula surgical repair.

BACKGROUND: Childbirth-related mortality and morbidity affect many women globally, especially in low-income countries like Ethiopia. Obstetric fistula-a preventable condition mainly caused by prolonged and obstructed labor-can lead to physical, psychological, and social challenges, affecting women's social participation and inclusion. OBJECTIVE: This study aims to understand women's social participation and inclusion experiences post-obstetric fistula surgery. METHODS: This study is part of a larger research project investigating the social inclusion process of women who have had obstetric f

Leaving no one behind? Social inclusion of health insurance in low- and middle-income countries: a systematic review.

BACKGROUND: One way to achieve universal health coverage (UHC) in low- and middle-income countries (LMIC) is the implementation of health insurance schemes. A robust and up to date overview of empirical evidence assessing and substantiating health equity impact of health insurance schemes among specific vulnerable populations in LMICs beyond the more common parameters, such as income level, is lacking. We fill this gap by conducting a systematic review of how social inclusion affects access to equitable health financing arrangements in LMIC. METHODS: We searched 11 databases to identify peer-

Mental health, social inclusion and the green agenda: an evaluation of a land based rehabilitation project designed to promote occupational access and inclusion of service users in North Somerset, UK.

The current debate about social inclusion in the field of mental health reveals a tension between the political and economic objectives of social policy. The former utilises the language of citizen empowerment and rights, whilst the latter is concerned with reducing welfare dependency through labour market activation. A central question here is whether a suitable programme of therapeutic work, training and support will produce better outcomes than those predicted by either a clinical diagnostic assessment or indeed open employment in the labour market. This article evaluates a research project

Preparing Students to Care for Socially Excluded Patients: A Qualitative Study of Inclusion Health in Undergraduate Medical Education.

INTRODUCTION: Extreme health inequities are experienced by Inclusion Health groups (including people experiencing homelessness, problem substance use, Gypsy, Roma and Traveller communities, vulnerable migrants, sex workers, people in contact with the justice system and victims of modern slavery). There is evidence that undergraduate medical education is failing to prepare students to work effectively with these socially excluded groups. This research explores challenges and opportunities in teaching Inclusion Health to medical students. METHODS: Twenty-three educators involved in teaching Inc

Causal modeling of chronic kidney disease in a participatory framework for informing the inclusion of social drivers in health algorithms.

OBJECTIVES: Incomplete or incorrect causal theories are a key source of bias in machine learning (ML) algorithms. Community-engaged methodologies provide an avenue for mitigating this bias through incorporating causal insights from community stakeholders into ML development. In health applications, community-engaged approaches can enable the study of social drivers of health (SDOH), which are known to shape health inequities. However, it remains challenging for SDOH to inform ML algorithms, partially because SDOH variables are known to be interrelated, yet it is difficult to elucidate the caus

The Protective Role of Social Inclusion: Loneliness as a Mediator Between Excessive Internet Use and Depressive Symptoms in Adolescents.

BACKGROUND: Excessive Internet Use (EIU) represents a significant concern among adolescents, with growing evidence linking it to adverse mental health outcomes, particularly depressive symptoms. PURPOSE: This study aims to examine the relationship between EIU and depressive symptoms among adolescents, focusing on the mediating role of loneliness and the moderating effect of social inclusion. METHODS: Drawing on data from the Finnish School Health Promotion Study (N = 131,528), we employed validated measures to assess EIU, loneliness, depressive symptoms, and social inclusion. Exploring Social Interactions and Engagement in Children With Autism During Inclusive and Adapted Tennis Sessions: A Pilot Study.

This pilot study explored patterns of social interaction and engagement in children with autism participating in adapted and inclusive tennis sessions alongside their nonautistic peers. Sixteen children with autism were observed through video analysis of 111 sessions led by coaches trained in autism. Engagement and social interaction were coded using a structured observational system to describe variability across participants and game contexts. Overall, children with autism tended to display predominantly positive interactions during the sessions. Although they interacted more frequently with

"Why can't you be normal?": an urgent call for social and institutional inclusivity of neurodivergent scientists in STEM workplaces.

The number of autistic people is growing rapidly. Among other traits, autism results in significantly more rational and objective thought patterns, and thus, neurodivergent students pursue education and employment in STEM fields at higher rates. However, autistic scientists experience discrimination and more career setbacks than neurotypical scientists. Despite the myth of scientific meritocracy, there are pervasive social expectations to "behave normally" and "fit in," encouraging the camouflaging of autistic traits, which can contribute to anxiety, depression, and suicidality. The literature

Health damages of nitrate exposure in drinking water: Inclusion of non-fatal conditions increases the social costs of nitrogen.

Nitrogen pollution of surface and groundwater remains largely unregulated resulting in negative impacts to human health and the environment. Policy interventions designed to internalize the negative externality of nutrient pollution have relied on low and highly uncertain damage estimates. Here we address an important gap in monetizing the health costs attributable to drinking water nitrate contamination in public water supplies. We consider fifteen adverse health conditions linked to elevated levels of drinking water nitrate including cancers, birth anomalies, and other non-fatal conditions.

Association between social inclusion and mental health among people with disabilities engaged in sports clubs: a cross-sectional survey.

OBJECTIVE: Participation in sports is known to promote social inclusion and mental health. However, barriers that limit the participation of people with disabilities in sports potentially exclude them from enjoying the social and mental health benefits. This study aimed to assess the level of social inclusion experienced by people with disabilities participating in sports clubs in Saudi Arabia, and to examine its relationship to specific mental health outcomes, namely, overall mental health, depression, and anxiety. METHODS: In this cross-sectional survey, people with disabilities were recrui

Factors associated with social inclusion of parents of children with autism spectrum disorder: a multicenter cross-sectional study in China.

BACKGROUND: Social inclusion of parents of children with autism spectrum disorder (ASD) affects their well-being and caregiving capacity. However, evidence on its factors remains limited in China. This study aimed to assess the social inclusion of parents of children with ASD and identify key factors, with attention to gender differences. METHODS: 1007 parents were enrolled from 33 rehabilitation centers in Hunan, China. Self-reported psychometric scales and a revised Chinese Social Inclusion Scale were used. Guided by the ecological model, univariate and multivariate regression analyses were

Challenges in teleworking management related to accommodations, inclusion, and the health of workers: A qualitative study through the lens of social exchanges.

BACKGROUND: Telework is increasingly prevalent and holds the potential to serve as an accommodation, facilitating inclusion and promoting healthy participation among various segments of the workforce, such as aging employees, individuals with chronic illnesses or those living alone with one or more dependents. Nevertheless, this promising avenue presents management challenges that remain underexplored in the literature. OBJECTIVE: This study aimed to identify the challenges in telework management related to accommodations, inclusion and the health of workers with life situations entailing spe

Decentralized subject recruitment for a prospective community surveillance system: The influence of social determinants of health on inclusion of minorities in research.

BACKGROUND/OBJECTIVE: Decentralized research has many advantages; however, little is known about the representativeness of a source population in decentralized studies. We recruited participants aged 18-64 years from four states from June to December 2022 for a prospective cohort study to assess viral epidemiology. Our aim was to determine the association between age, gender, race/ethnicity, rurality, and socioeconomic status (SES) on study participation in a decentralized prospective cohort study. METHODS: We consented 9,286 participants from 231,099 (4.0%) adults with the mean age of 45.6 y

Countering social exclusion through inclusive homecare provision: Utilising a participatory life-course approach to influence policy.

Homecare models can be effective mechanisms in securing wellbeing and ageing-in-place goals prevalent in health policy agendas. However, the relevance and utility of these models for those living in socially and environmentally insecure conditions has rarely been considered. This is marked by an assumption of in-situ care delivery in private dwellings, and the absence of such groups from homecare development processes. This study aims to harnesses the experiences and preferences of older people in homelessness (OH), older Irish Travellers (OT), and professional stakeholders in an evidence-base

Effectiveness of interventions for improving social inclusion outcomes for people with disabilities in low- and middle-income countries: A systematic review.

BACKGROUND: People with disabilities-more than a billion people worldwide-are frequently excluded from social and political life, and often experience stigmatising attitudes and behaviours from people without disabilities. This stigma, coupled with inaccessible environments and systems and institutional barriers (e.g., lack of inclusive legislation), may result in discrimination against people with disabilities (and their families) to the degree that they are not able to enjoy their rights on an equal basis with others. OBJECTIVES: This review examines the effectiveness of interventions for i

A modified Continuous Quality Improvement approach to improve culturally and socially inclusive care within rural health services.

BACKGROUND: The sickest Australians are often those belonging to non-privileged groups, including Indigenous Australians, gay, lesbian, bisexual, transsexual, intersex and queer people, people from culturally and linguistically diverse backgrounds, socioeconomically disadvantaged groups, and people with disabilities and low English literacy. These consumers are not always engaged by, or included within, mainstream health services, particularly in rural Australia where health services are limited in number and tend to be generalist in nature. Experiences of social participation and inclusion among primary caregivers of children with cerebral palsy in China: a qualitative descriptive study.

BACKGROUND: Primary caregivers of children with cerebral palsy (CP) may experience challenges affecting their social participation and inclusion. However, these experiences remain insufficiently understood in the Chinese context. Understanding these experiences is important for family-centred nursing and rehabilitation support. METHODS: A qualitative descriptive study was conducted with 26 primary caregivers recruited from a tertiary rehabilitation hospital in China. Semi-structured interviews were conducted face-to-face, via WeChat video call, or by telephone. Data were analysed inductively
