Implicitly tuned: The neural effects of social feedback on adolescent learning.

Adolescents are particularly tuned to social cues, but how does this sensitivity affect their learning? This study examined whether social feedback conveyed through human faces modulates implicit learning of auditory speech patterns. Magnetoencephalography (MEG) was used to assess neural measures of learning in response to auditory linguistic input as participants engaged in a computer-controlled guessing task and received incidental social feedback in the form of smiling (positive) or frowning (negative) faces. The results showed that smiling faces produced neural response patterns consistent

Frontal Midline Theta Promotes Context-dependent Aversive Learning in Social Anxiety.

Social anxiety is reliably characterized by biases toward avoidance and aversive learning. Here, we examined the neurocomputational processes underlying these biases and examined whether these biases persist across different social contexts. A sample of 154 participants (84% female, mean age = 20.42 years) with subclinical to minimal levels of social anxiety completed a probabilistic selection task in two contexts: performing alone and under social scrutiny. We analyzed frontal midline theta (FM-theta) EEG activity to uncover neurocomputational processes underlying aversive learning in social

Disaster mitigation based on Minangkabau indigenous knowledge in social studies learning.

UNLABELLED: Indonesia ranks among the world's most disaster-prone countries due to its location within the Pacific Ring of Fire. West Sumatra, in particular, frequently experiences earthquakes, tsunamis, volcanic eruptions, flash floods, and hydrometeorological hazards. These recurring disasters highlight the urgent need for mitigation strategies that integrate scientific approaches with traditional indigenous knowledge. This study explores the potential of Minangkabau indigenous knowledge as a source of values, knowledge, and socio-cultural practices that can be incorporated into social studi

Social robot navigation: a review and benchmarking of learning-based methods.

For autonomous mobile robots to operate effectively in human environments, navigation must extend beyond obstacle avoidance to incorporate social awareness. Safe and fluid interaction in shared spaces requires the ability to interpret human motion and adapt to social norms-an area that is being reshaped by advances in learning-based methods. This review examines recent progress in learning-based social navigation methods that deal with the complexities of human-robot coexistence. We introduce a taxonomy of navigation methods and analyze core system components, including realistic training envi

Multi-level social network alignment via adversarial learning and graphlet modeling.

Aiming to identify corresponding users in different networks, social network alignment is significant for numerous subsequent applications. Most existing models apply consistency assumptions on undirected networks, ignoring platform disparity caused by diverse functionalities and universal directed relations like follower-followee. Due to indistinguishable nodes and relations, subgraph isomorphism is also unavoidable in neighborhoods. In order to precisely align directed and attributed social networks, we propose the Multi-level Adversarial and Graphlet-based Social Network Alignment (MAGSNA),

Social anxiety prediction based on ERP features: A deep learning approach.

BACKGROUND: Social Anxiety Disorder is traditionally diagnosed using subjective scales that may lack accuracy. Recently, EEG technology has gained importance for anxiety detection due to its ability to capture stable and objective neurophysiological activities. However, existing methods mainly focus on extracting EEG features during resting states, with limited use of psychologically features like Event-Related Potential (ERP) in task-related states for anxiety detection in deep learning frameworks. METHODS: We collected EEG data from 63 participants exposed to four facial expressions and ext

Social Relationships, Self-Esteem, and Loneliness in Adolescents with Learning Disabilities.

OBJECTIVE: Many studies have underlined that students with learning disabilities (LDs) feel that school is their main factor of frustration and reflects on their social reputations, isolation, and sociorelational discomfort. However, the role of LDs in psychosocial outcomes in adolescence is still unclear. In the present study, we explore the differences among three groups of adolescents (adolescents without LDs, adolescents with LDs, and adolescents with LDs who have the support of psychosocial educational intervention) in self-esteem, friendship quality, loneliness, and secrecy. METHOD: The

[Learning disorders in adolescents and associated social and health risk factors].

OBJECTIVES: To determine the prevalence of learning disorders, defined as repeating a year, in adolescents and associated social and health risk factors. PATIENTS AND METHODS: A prospective cross-sectional study of a cohort of 14-year-olds was performed. Data (medical, social and family history and anthropometric data) were collected by pediatricians and a self-administered questionnaire on school progress, health-related self-image, physical activity, leisure-time activities, family and social relationships, drug and alcohol consumption, and self-esteem was given to the adolescents. Discourse processes underlying social competence in children with language learning disabilities.

Children with both a language impairment and a learning disability are at risk for poor social competence. Yet the processes that place these children at risk remain unclear. A developmental-organizational perspective was used to explore processes underlying risk for poor social competence among language learning disable children. To this end, the relative influences of language learning disability and social discourse skills on social competence were examined in 50 language learning disabled (LLD) and 50 control (non-LLD) children aged 8-12 years. Findings indicated that social discourse skil

Interactive representations of power and status signals in learning social hierarchies.

Social hierarchies, which organize our social relationships, have heterogeneous effects on choice behavior. Two central dimensions of social hierarchies, status, which is earned through recognition of competence, and power, which is the capacity to control the outcomes of others, may contribute to different behavioral profiles. Yet, the neurocomputational processes by which status- and power-related signals are learned based on social feedback, and influence subsequent decision-making, remain unclear. Here, we combine functional neuroimaging with computational modeling to examine how individua

Moral learning and positive schizotypy: Social cognitive mechanisms in psychosis- proneness.

BACKGROUND: Delusional thoughts such as paranoia and conspiratorial thinking reflect beliefs in others' intentions to do harm. Given the integral role of harm evaluation in moral cognition, a better understanding of how psychosis-prone individuals process others' moral characters may provide insights into social cognitive mechanisms of these types of delusions. METHODS: An online sample of 293 participants was drawn from the general population, using Amazon Mechanical Turk. Participants performed a moral inference task, where they predicted and judged the binary choices of two fictitious agen

Temperament and Social-Emotional Difficulties: The Dark Side of Learning Disabilities.

The authors compared the relations between general psychological difficulties and dimensions of temperament in children with and without learning disability (LD). The main aim was to analyze whether and to what extent children's temperament dimensions contribute to their general psychological difficulties when LD diagnosis, age, and gender are taken into account. Participants were 52 elementary school children 7-11 years old (M age = 8.61 years, SD = 1.21 years). Twenty-six of them had been diagnosed with LD. Six teachers rated their pupils with and without LD in relation to their general psyc

The role of learning in social development: Illustrations from neglected children.

Children who experience early caregiving neglect are very likely to have problems developing and maintaining relationships and regulating their social behavior. One of the earliest manifestations of this problem is reflected in indiscriminate behavior, a phenomenon where young children do not show normative wariness of strangers or use familiar adults as sources of security. To better understand the developmental mechanisms underlying the emergence of these problems, this study examined whether institutionally reared children, who experienced early social neglect, had difficulty associating mo

Social learning about ethanol in preweanling rats: role of endogenous opioids.

The role of the endogenous opioid system in social learning about ethanol was examined in three experiments using preweanling rats. Experiment 1 showed that interactions with intoxicated siblings in the home cage on postnatal Days (PD) 12, 14, and 16 results in increased voluntary intake of ethanol when subjects are tested 24 hr after the final exposure. The results also suggested that the endogenous opioid system is not involved in acquisition. Administration of naloxone during social exposure to ethanol had no effect on later ethanol intake. Experiment 2 examined the effects of receptor-sele

The impact of social presence on perceived learning performance in online education.

Building on digital information technology, online education in Chinese universities has developed rapidly. While it offers flexibility, it often reduces student engagement and increases learning burnout. How to fully leverage the advantages of online education while mitigating its negative effects has become a key concern in online learning research. The current study investigates how social presence influences undergraduates' perceived learning performance in online teaching, focusing on the mediating role of learning burnout and the moderating effects of individualism and intrinsic learning

The impact of environmental and social factors on learning abilities: a meta-analysis.

Since the 1950s, researchers have examined how differences in the social and asocial environment affect learning in rats, mice, and, more recently, a variety of other species. Despite this large body of research, little has been done to synthesize these findings and to examine if social and asocial environmental factors have consistent effects on cognitive abilities, and if so, what aspects of these factors have greater or lesser impact. Here, we conducted a systematic review and meta-analysis examining how different external environmental features, including the social environment, impact lea

Social anxiety is characterized by biased learning about performance and the self.

People learn about their self from social information, and recent work suggests that healthy adults show a positive bias for learning self-related information. In contrast, social anxiety disorder (SAD) is characterized by a negative view of the self, yet what causes and maintains this negative self-view is not well understood. Here the authors use a novel experimental paradigm and computational model to test the hypothesis that biased social learning regarding self-evaluation and self-feelings represents a core feature that distinguishes adults with SAD from healthy controls. Twenty-one adult

Children's thoughts on the social exclusion of peers with intellectual or learning disabilities.

BACKGROUND: Previous research has shown that children with intellectual or learning disabilities are at risk for social exclusion by their peers but little is known of children's views on this topic. In this study, we used concept mapping to investigate elementary school children's thoughts on why they believe their peers with intellectual or learning disabilities are sometimes socially excluded at school. METHOD: Participants were 49 grade five and six children who attended inclusive classrooms. Interviews were digitally recorded and transcribed. We extracted 49 unique statements from the tr

Learning to account for the social determinants of health affecting homeless persons.

CONTEXT: Intersecting social determinants of health constrain access to care and treatment adherence among homeless populations. Because clinicians seldom receive training in the social determinants of health, they may be unprepared to account for or address these factors when developing treatment strategies for homeless individuals. OBJECTIVES: This study explored: (i) clinicians' preparedness to provide care responsive to the social determinants of health in homeless populations, and (ii) the steps taken by clinicians to overcome shortcomings in their clinical training in regard to the soci
