Individual and neighbourhood determinants of social participation and social capital: a multilevel analysis of the city of Malmö, Sweden.

The aim of this study was to analyse the impact of neighbourhood on individual social capital (measured as social participation). The study population consisted of 14,390 individuals aged 45-73 that participated in the Malmö diet and cancer study in 1992-1994, residing in 90 neighbourhoods of Malmö, Sweden (population 250,000). A multilevel logistic regression model, with individuals at the first level and neighbourhoods at the second level, was performed. The study analysed the effect (intra-area correlation and cross-level modification) of the neighbourhood on individual social capital after

Social and Physical Activity Participation Among Older Adults With Disability: The Interplay of Senior Housing and Perceived Social Cohesion.

Residential environments are critical factors influencing activity participation among older adults with disabilities. We examined whether living in senior housing (i.e., retirement communities or independent living) is associated with participation in social and physical activities and whether this association varies by perceived social cohesion. Data came from 3317 respondents in the 2019 National Health and Aging Trends Study who reported difficulty with self-care, mobility, or household tasks. Weighted logistic regression models showed that senior housing residents were more likely to part

Reconstructing Social Participation in Rural Communities: A Qualitative Study of Community Nursing Practice.

Introduction Participation is a central outcome in community-based rehabilitation, particularly in aging societies where social isolation among older adults is increasing. Community nurses have emerged as key facilitators of social participation in community settings. However, the mechanisms through which community nurses reconstruct participation in everyday practice remain insufficiently understood. This study aimed to clarify how community nurses reconstruct and facilitate participation in community-based rehabilitation. Methods This retrospective qualitative study analyzed activity logs an

Social participation and depressive symptomatology among medical students: A Saudi cross-sectional study.

Substantial evidence indicates that social participation contributes significantly to psychological well-being. Furthermore, medical students have emerged as a prominent demographic group affected by depression. This trend is mirrored locally in the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia, where medical students exhibit a higher prevalence of depressive symptoms. This cross-sectional study investigated the association between depressive symptoms and social participation among medical students. Additionally, this study examined whether different forms of social participation had varying effects on depressive s

Racial and Ethnic Disparities of Social Participation After Tetraplegia Injury: A Regression Analysis.

OBJECTIVE: The first aim of this study was to determine whether the use of computers, internet, and computer assistive technology (AT) increased social participation after tetraplegia spinal cord injury. The second aim was to determine whether racial or ethnic disparities of technology use were experienced. DESIGN: A secondary analysis of data collected by the National Spinal Cord Injury Models Systems Study (NSCIMS), an ongoing observational cohort study, was performed on a sample of 3096 participants who experienced a traumatic tetraplegic injury. PARTICIPANTS: Participants included were a

Digital recovery management: Characterizing recovery-specific social network site participation and perceived benefit.

Research shows that digital social network sites (SNSs) may be valuable platforms to effect health behavior change. Little is known specifically about their ability to help address alcohol and other drug problems. This gap is noteworthy, given that individuals are already participating in existing, recovery-specific SNSs (hereafter referred to as recovery SNSs): online communities with the functionality of conventional SNSs (e.g., Facebook) that focus on substance use disorder (SUD) recovery. For example, InTheRooms.com (ITR) is a large, well-known recovery SNS that is available for free 24 hr

Coeliac disease: the association between quality of life and social support network participation.

BACKGROUND: There is little information available on the use of social support systems for patients with coeliac disease (CD). We performed a cross-sectional study aiming to examine the association between participation in different types of social support networks and quality of life (QOL) in adults with CD. METHODS: A survey including a validated CD specific QOL instrument was administered online and in-person to adults with CD who were following a gluten-free diet. Participation in social support networks (type, frequency and duration) were assessed. RESULTS: Among the 2138 participants,

Social neighborhood environment and sports participation among Dutch adults: does sports location matter?

Studies on the relation between the social neighborhood environment and sports participation have produced inconsistent results. Use of generic sports outcomes may have obscured associations only apparent for sports at certain locations. This study aims to assess the association between the social neighborhood environment and three location-specific sports outcomes. Repeated cross-sectional data on sports participation (any type of sports, sports at indoor sports clubs, sports at outdoor sports clubs, sports on streets) were obtained from 20 600 adults using the Dutch national health survey 20

Social cognitive influences on physical activity participation in long-term breast cancer survivors.

BACKGROUND: Although physical activity is beneficial for breast cancer survivors, the majority do not meet public health physical activity recommendations. The purpose of this study was to test a social cognitive theory model of physical activity behavior in a sample of long-term breast cancer survivors using both self-report and objective measures of physical activity. METHODS: Participants (N = 1527) completed measures of physical activity, self-efficacy, goals, outcome expectations, fatigue, and social support at baseline and 6-month follow-up. The impact of stroke-related dysarthria on social participation and implications for rehabilitation.

INTRODUCTION: Each year an estimated 30,000-45,000 UK individuals experience stroke-related dysarthria (impairment of movements required to produce speech). Many will experience persistent dysarthria long after discharge from stroke services. Although we have some insight into the impact of other communication impairments, we have very limited information on the impact of dysarthria on social participation. PURPOSE: To explore the impact of dysarthria on social participation following stroke. METHODS: We report data from in-depth semi-structured interviews with 24 individuals with stroke-rel

Predicting participation in premarital prevention programs: the health belief model and social norms.

The development of effective programs to prevent marital dysfunction has been a recent focus for marital researchers, but the effective dissemination of these programs to engaged couples has received relatively little attention. The purpose of this study is to determine which factors predict couples' participation in premarital counseling. Predictive factors were derived from the health prevention literature, with a particular focus on the health belief model (HBM). Couples' beliefs and attitudes about premarital counseling were assessed at least six months before their wedding, and participat

Life after loss: gendered changes in social networks and community participation around widowhood.

OBJECTIVES: This study examined how widowhood shapes older adults' close network composition and quality and community participation, and whether these effects differ by gender. METHODS: Data from the Survey of Health, Ageing and Retirement in Europe (SHARE) were used to analyze 55,555 Europeans aged 50 and older, including 3,257 who became widowed between survey waves. Fixed-effects panel models estimated within-person changes in network size, composition (number of friends, children, and others in the network), satisfaction with the network, emotional closeness (average level of closeness a

Genetic association of social participation with cognitive function: A bidirectional Mendelian randomization study.

BackgroundCognitive decline poses a significant challenge in aging societies. While some studies suggest that active social participation mitigates cognitive decline, others present conflicting findings.ObjectiveThis bidirectional two-sample Mendelian randomization (MR) study aimed to elucidate the causal relationship between social participation and cognitive function.MethodsThe cognitive performance dataset (n = 257,841) was used as the discovery sample, while cognitive function (n = 22,593) and Alzheimer's disease (AD) datasets (n = 394,705) served as replication samples and proxies for sev

PURPOSE: This study aimed to explore the relationship between mobility constraints and social participation among the elderly in India. MATERIALS AND METHODS: A cross-sectional survey was conducted to assess social participation (N = 912). Social participation was measured using a participation scale, and mobility limitations were measured using 4 meter walk test, Fall Efficacy Scale (FES I), community balance and mobility scale, and a questionnaire for assistive devices. RESULTS: Mobility-related factors explained 28.4% of the variation in social participation (F [4, 907] = 91.331, P = 0.00
