Perceptions of social support, empowerment and youth risk behaviors.

This study examined the association of perceived social support and community empowerment among urban middle-school students living in Matamoros, Mexico and the risk behaviors of fighting, alcohol and tobacco use, and sexual activity. Middle school students (n = 1,181) from 32 public and private Mexican schools were surveyed. Weighted multiple logistic regression analyses were conducted. Among girls, lack of parent/teacher interactions regarding school increased odds for fighting, alcohol and tobacco use. Among boys, lack of empowerment increased odds of alcohol and tobacco use and lack of par

Perceptions of health misinformation on social media: patterns and predictors.

PURPOSE: Determine factors associated with perceived amount of health misinformation when using social media. METHODS: Secondary analysis of the Health Information National Trends Survey 7 (HINTS 7). US adults 18 years and older completed surveys in 2024 (N = 7,278). Participants with complete data for all variables were included for analysis (N = 4,741). Univariable and multivariable logistic regression models were used to identify correlates of interest for how much health misinformation participants saw when using social media. "A lot" and "some" responses were compared to "a little" and "

The effect of social dominance orientation on perceptions of corporal punishment.

Previous research has suggested the use of corporal punishment is widely endorsed in our society (Straus, 2000; Straus & Stewart, 1999). Furthermore, perceptions of what constitutes corporal punishment vary. The present study examined social dominance orientation (SDO) and age of child as potential factors that may influence perceptions of what is viewed as corporal punishment versus physical abuse. The sample consisted of 206 undergraduate students enrolled at a Rocky Mountain University. A series of regressions were used to examine the relationships between SDO and six forms of punishment. F

The effects of trichotillomania disclosure on peer perceptions and social acceptability.

Many individuals with trichotillomania (TTM) do not disclose their condition to others. Although disclosure may have beneficial effects, little is known about the consequences of it. The purpose of the current study was to examine the effects of a brief, simplified preventative disclosure of TTM. Young adults (N=225) read one of four vignettes, which varied in a 2 (male versus female character)x2 (preventative disclosure of TTM versus nondisclosure) design, and answered several questions regarding the character in the vignette. Although some potential positive effects of disclosure were found

Threat perception bias in nonreferred, socially anxious children.

Investigated whether socially anxious children display a threat perception bias. A sample of 252 primary school children ages 8 to 13 years were exposed to ambiguous stories of social situations and instructed to find out as quickly as possible whether a story was scary. Furthermore, children were invited to tell how each story would end and to judge how they would feel when actually confronted with that situation. The main results can be summarized as follows. First, socially anxious children displayed lower thresholds for threat perception than control children. In other words, compared with

Social expectancies and self-perceptions in anxiety-disordered children.

The link between anxiety and negative social expectancies was examined by comparing 47 anxiety-disordered children with 31 nonanxiety-disordered controls on social expectancies, social anxiety, and self-perceived social competence. Participants were exposed to a videotape of confederate children playing a game, being told the children were next door. In anticipation of joining the play, social expectations were assessed via thought-listing and a questionnaire. Parent, teacher, and child measures of sociability were completed prior to the experimental session. Results indicated that anxiety-dis

Relationship of social perceptions and self-concept in bulimia nervosa.

Although numerous studies have examined the families of bulimic individuals, none have explicitly addressed how family factors relate to self-concept among patients with bulimia. This study used L. Benjamin's' structural analysis of social behavior (1974) rating scales to assess how perceptions of parental relationships relate to self-concept. The results indicate that female patients with bulimia perceive both parents as hostilely disengaged. Furthermore, the self-concepts of patients with bulimia were significantly associated with perceptions of paternal attack/friendliness, which differenti

Social perception of AIDS in the general public: a French study.

The paper presents the results of the first national survey about social perception of AIDS in a representative sample of the French general public (which was carried out in June 1987). A large majority of the French public (73.1% of respondents) support mandatory screening for HIV, and a significant part (21.9% of respondents) even favours isolation of AIDS patients. Results show the relations between false beliefs on transmission of AIDS by casual contact and willingness to agree with measures that carry a great danger of stigmatization for AIDS patients and HIV carriers; but strong correlat

Perception of infection: disease-related social cues influence immunity in songbirds.

While avoidance of sick conspecifics is common among animals, little is known about how detecting diseased conspecifics influences an organism's physiological state, despite its implications for disease transmission dynamics. The avian pathogen Mycoplasma gallisepticum (MG) causes obvious visual signs of infection in domestic canaries (Serinus canaria domestica), including lethargy and conjunctivitis, making this system a useful tool for investigating how the perception of cues from sick individuals shapes immunity in healthy individuals. We tested whether disease-related social information ca

Abnormal activation of the social brain during face perception in autism.

ASD involves a fundamental impairment in processing social-communicative information from faces. Several recent studies have challenged earlier findings that individuals with autism spectrum disorder (ASD) have no activation of the fusiform gyrus (fusiform face area, FFA) when viewing faces. In this study, we examined activation to faces in the broader network of face-processing modules that comprise what is known as the social brain. Using 3T functional resonance imaging, we measured BOLD signal changes in 10 ASD subjects and 7 healthy controls passively viewing nonemotional faces. We replica

Clients' characteristics as mediating variables in perception of counselors' social influence.

48 clients in a rehabilitation center viewed two 12-min, videotapes each, one depicting a counselor high in social influence and the other one of low influence. They then rated the counselors on the Counselor Rating Form and the Empathy subscale of the Barrett-Lennard Relationship Inventory. Black subjects and subjects at lower educational levels rated the counselor of low social influence significantly higher than did whites and better educated subjects on all measures. White subjects and subjects at higher educational levels rated the counselor of high social influence significantly higher o

Social perception in deaf individuals: A meta-analysis of neuroimaging studies.

Deaf individuals may report difficulties in social interactions. However, whether these difficulties depend on deafness affecting social brain circuits is controversial. Here, we report the first meta-analysis comparing brain activations of hearing and (prelingually) deaf individuals during social perception. Our findings showed that deafness does not impact on the functional mechanisms supporting social perception. Indeed, both deaf and hearing control participants recruited regions of the action observation network during performance of different social tasks employing visual stimuli, and in

Psychological Disorder Identifying Method Based on Emotion Perception over Social Networks.

The Institute for Health Metrics and Evaluation (IHME) has stated that over 1.1 billion people suffered from mental disorders globally in 2016, and the burden of mental disorders has continued to grow with impacts on social development. Despite the implementation of strategies for promotion and prevention in mental health WHO's Comprehensive Mental Health Action Plan 2013⁻2020, the difficulty of diagnosis of mental disorders makes the objective "To provide comprehensive, integrated, and responsive mental health and social care services in community-based settings" hard to carry out. Self- and social perception of physical appearance in chest wall deformity.

This study analyzes self- and social perception of physical appearance in patients with chest wall deformity (CWD), including both pectus carinatum and pectus excavatum. Self-perception of appearance in 76 patients with CWD and social perception of patients' appearance by 20 adult and 20 adolescent raters was assessed using the Appearance Rating Scale (Stangier et al., 2000) and evaluated for agreement and multivariate correlates. Results indicate no agreement between self- and social rating. Based on mean scores patients rated their appearance significantly more negatively than adult raters b

Older home nursing patients' perception of social provisions and received care.

Social loneliness and isolation may be some of the consequences that older people experience regarding age-related changes and losses, and nurses should be engaged in identifying social networks and social needs in this group. The aims of this study were to describe perceived social provisions in a group of older home-dwelling care-dependent patients, and to explore the relationship between perceived social provisions, physical functioning, mental state and reception of formal and informal care. The sample consisted of 242 persons aged 75+ years from seven municipalities in southern Norway, al

Perception of control over anxiety mediates the relation between catastrophic thinking and social anxiety in social phobia.

Cognitive models of social phobia (social anxiety disorder) assume that individuals with social phobia experience anxiety in social situations in part because they overestimate the social cost associated with a potentially negative outcome of a social interaction. Some emotion theorists, on the other hand, point to the perception of control over anxiety-related symptoms as a determinant of social anxiety. In order to examine the relationship between perceived emotional control (PEC), estimated social cost (ESC), and subjective anxiety, we compared three alternative structural equation models:

High risk, high reward: Daily perceptions of social challenge and performance in social anxiety disorder.

Individuals with Social Anxiety Disorder (SAD) have difficulty engaging in social situations because their actions are predicated on minimizing the subjectively biased high potential for rejection. That is, individuals with SAD frequently perceive social situations as challenging, and their performance as subpar. Yet when individuals perceive themselves as succeeding in challenging situations, they typically report these situations as enjoyable and rewarding. This subjective experience of succeeding in a challenging situation has been studied as flow (Csikszentmihalyi, 1975; 2000). Thirty-thre

Audio-visual timing underlies sex differences in the perception of social displays.

Sex differences in responses to social signals are traditionally attributed to downstream processes of receiver motivation and signal valuation. However, an alternative hypothesis suggests that such dimorphism originates earlier at the level of perceptual organization. Multimodal communication provides an ideal model to test these possibilities, as sensory streams must be bound before valuation. Here I examine sex-specific sensitivity to the temporal structure of audio-visual displays in the starling Sturnus vulgaris. Using a robotic taxidermic model in field conditions, I examined early refle

The effects of spatial relations and motion information in social scene perception.

A body of research shows that the human visual system hosts a network specialized in processing social interactions-i.e., physical/communicative exchanges between people. This network largely overlaps with regions involved in motion perception. Current views propose that, since motion is an intrinsic component of social interaction, it is necessary to trigger social-interaction selectivity. However, the relationship between social-interaction perception and motion perception remains unclear. We took advantage of two existing functional MRI datasets collected in the same participants, to identi

Social Capital and Subjective Health Perception among Older Community Residents in Japan.

INTRODUCTION: Poor subjective health perception is a well-known risk factor for morbidity and mortality. This study aimed to investigate the relationship between social capital (SC) and health confidence among older individuals in a community setting. METHODS: The study included 884 individuals aged 60-79 years residing in a city in the Hokuriku region (460 men and 424 women; mean age: 70.32 ± 4.03 years). The analysis considered the following variables: residential area, sex, age, presence or absence of cohabitants, SC (general trust in the community, reciprocity among community members, att
