Communicative versus strategic rationality: Habermas theory of communicative action and the social brain.

In the philosophical theory of communicative action, rationality refers to interpersonal communication rather than to a knowing subject. Thus, a social view of rationality is suggested. The theory differentiates between two kinds of rationality, the emancipative communicative and the strategic or instrumental reasoning. Using experimental designs in an fMRI setting, recent studies explored similar questions of reasoning in the social world and linked them with a neural network including prefrontal and parietal brain regions. Here, we employed an fMRI approach to highlight brain areas associate

Assessing social competence and antisocial behaviors in children: item response theory analysis of the home and community social behavior scales.

BACKGROUND: The Home and Community Social Behavior Scales (HCSBS) is a rating scale that assesses social competence and antisocial behavior among children and youths between ages 5-18. The present study aimed to investigate the psychometric properties of the HCSBS by applying item response theory (IRT). METHODS: The HCSBS was completed by parents of 551 Norwegian children refereed to three independent interventions towards problem behaviors. Data used in this study was collected before the interventions started. IRT was carried out in R version 4.0.0 to investigate HCSBS items, subscales and

Alcoholics anonymous and recovery in Türkiye: A qualitative study in the context of Social Identity Theory.

Alcoholics anonymous (AA) groups play a central role in facilitating the transition from an 'addicted' identity to a 'recovering' identity; however, empirical research on how this identity transformation is socially constructed, maintained and questioned within group contexts is limited. Drawing on Social Identity Theory (SIT), this qualitative study examines how AA group dynamics shape members' sense of belonging, processes of identity reconstruction and experiences of recovery while also illuminating the vulnerabilities that may destabilize recovery identity. The study involved in-depth inte

Turning Structures Into Attributes: The Marginalisation of Critical Theory in Research on Social Determinants of Health.

Critical theory has provided important resources for understanding the social determinants of health (SDOH). Yet less is known about what happens to these explanatory resources as SDOH becomes increasingly institutionalised in research and policy. We examine this question through a scoping review of 298 peer-reviewed SDOH reviews published between 2005 and 2025, together with a close analysis of the 15 reviews with the highest annualised Web of Science citation rates. The findings show a pronounced and widening discursive asymmetry: mainstream, technically oriented reviews dominate the literat

Violence suffered by older adults deprived of liberty in the light of social ecological theory.

The aim is to analyze the violence suffered by older adults in the prison system in light of social ecological theory. This work is a cross-sectional study conducted with 262 older adults deprived of liberty from all prison units in the macro-regions of the state of Ceará. Data collection took place from May to September 2022 using sociodemographic and prison profile analysis tools in an electronic questionnaire tool called LimeSurvey. The categorized variables considered the dimensions of social ecological theory and were associated with the outcome of experiencing violence in the prison syst

Highlighting the impact of social relationships on the propagation of respiratory viruses using percolation theory.

We develop a site-bond percolation model, called PERCOVID, in order to describe the time evolution of all epidemics propagating through respiratory tract or by skin contacts in human populations. This model is based on a network of social relationships representing interconnected households experiencing governmental non-pharmaceutical interventions. As a very first testing ground, we apply our model to the understanding of the dynamics of the COVID-19 pandemic in France from December 2019 up to December 2021. Our model shows the impact of lockdowns and curfews, as well as the influence of the

Social anxiety and suicidal ideation: Test of the utility of the interpersonal-psychological theory of suicide.

Social anxiety is related to greater suicidality, even after controlling for depression and other psychopathology. The Interpersonal-Psychological Theory of Suicide (IPTS; Joiner, 2005) proposes that people are vulnerable to wanting to die by suicide if they experience both perceived burdensomeness (sense that one is a burden to others) and thwarted belongingness (a greater sense of alienation from others). Socially anxious persons may be especially vulnerable to these interpersonal factors. The current study tested whether interpersonal IPTS components independently and additively mediate the

Impact of Child Maltreatment on Attachment and Social Rank Systems: Introducing an Integrated Theory.

Child maltreatment is a prevalent societal problem that has been linked to a wide range of social, psychological, and emotional difficulties. Maltreatment impacts on two putative evolved psychobiological systems in particular, the attachment system and the social rank system. The maltreatment may disrupt the child's ability to form trusting and reassuring relationships and also creates a power imbalance where the child may feel powerless and ashamed. The aim of the current article is to outline an evolutionary theory for understanding the impact of child maltreatment, focusing on the interacti

Predicting social functioning in schizotypy: an investigation of the relative contributions of theory of mind and mood.

Theory of mind (ToM) is an aspect of social cognition that refers to the ability to make inferences about the thoughts, feelings, and intentions of other people. It is believed to be related to social functioning. Previous investigations of ToM in schizotypy have yielded mixed results. Using a correlational approach, the present study explored the relationship between schizotypal traits, ToM, neurocognition, depressed mood, and social functioning in a sample of 50 undergraduate students. Schizotypy was related to poor social functioning. Contrary to predictions, schizotypal traits were not ass

Deficits in neurocognition, theory of mind, and social functioning in patients with schizophrenic disorders: are they related?

In schizophrenic disorders, impairments in social functioning, neurocognition, and theory of mind (ToM) are frequently reported but little is known about the relationships between them. The aim of this study is twofold: (a) to compare neurocognition, social-functioning, and ToM in patients and controls and (b) to investigate whether impairments in these domains are related to psychiatric symptoms. Participants were 16 outpatients with schizophrenic disorders (DSM-IV), and 16 healthy controls. We administered neuropsychological tests, ToM, social functioning, and psychopathology measures. Social maturity and theory of mind in typically developing children and those on the autism spectrum.

BACKGROUND: Results of several studies using the Vineland scale to explore links between social behavior and theory of mind (ToM) have produced mixed results, especially for children on the autism spectrum. The present pair of studies developed a psychometrically sound, age-referenced measure of social maturity to explore these issues further. METHOD: In Study 1, 37 typically developing preschoolers took a battery of standard false belief tests of ToM and were rated by their teachers on a newly developed age-referenced social maturity scale with 7 items. In Study 2, a further group of 43 chil

Parents' social adjustment in families of children with spina bifida: a theory-driven review.

OBJECTIVE: Five theoretical hypotheses about the impact of spina bifida (SB) on parents' social adjustment in the parent-child, the marital and the family-level relationship were tested. METHODS: PsycInfo, Medline and reference lists were searched. This yielded 27 eligible reports. Effect sizes (Hedges' d) were computed to estimate the impact of SB. RESULTS: Overall, the effects of SB were small to negligible on the affective dimensions of parents' relationships. The few effects that were found tended to be positive. The most important negative effects of SB were found in the parent-child re

Social rank theory of depression: A systematic review of self-perceptions of social rank and their relationship with depressive symptoms and suicide risk.

BACKGROUND: Depression can be debilitating, as well as a risk factor for self-harm and suicide. Social rank theory (SRT) suggests depression stems from feelings of defeat and entrapment that ensue from experiencing oneself to be of lower rank than others. This study aims to review the literature investigating the relationship between self-perceptions of social rank and depressive symptoms or suicidal ideation/behaviour. METHODS: A keyword search of three psychological and medical databases was completed (Psychinfo, Medline, Web of Knowledge). Studies were quality assessed using established cr

Developing a program theory for implementing a Danish social prescribing model: an ethnographic study.

INTRODUCTION: Social prescribing (SP) is increasingly promoted internationally as a cross-sector strategy to address complex health and social needs by linking primary care patients with community-based, non-clinical support. Despite increasing policy uptake and expanding evaluations of outcomes, evidence on how SP models are implemented and become embedded in routine practice across diverse welfare and organizational contexts remains limited and fragmented. Existing studies tend to catalogue implementation activities and contextual barriers without sufficiently explaining how implementation s

Self-Determination Theory in the Social Acceptance of Sustainable Energies and Technologies: A Comprehensive Review.

The transition toward sustainable energy systems is not only a technological and economic challenge but also a social one, with public acceptance playing a decisive role in the success of sustainability transitions. While traditional technology acceptance models primarily emphasize cognitive and utilitarian determinants, increasing attention has been directed toward underlying motivational processes. Self-Determination Theory (SDT) provides a valuable framework for understanding how autonomous and controlled motivation shape attitudes and behaviours toward sustainable energy technologies. This

Social cognition in basal ganglia pathologies: Theory of Mind in Huntington's and Parkinson's diseases.

Theory of Mind (ToM) is the ability to predict the behaviour of others by inferring their cognitive and affective states. The literature suggests that different neural substrates within the basal ganglia are involved in the affective (ventral striatum) and cognitive (dorsal striatum) components of ToM. We investigated ToM dysfunction in two different basal ganglia pathologies, Huntington's disease (HD) and Parkinson's disease (PD), in their early stages. Indeed, a different progression of neurodegeneration from the dorsal striatum to the ventral striatum is described in the two diseases. We al

Childhood Adversity Is Associated with Adult Theory of Mind and Social Affiliation, but Not Face Processing.

People vary substantially in their ability to acquire and maintain social ties. Here, we use a combined epidemiological and individual differences approach to understand the childhood roots of adult social cognitive functioning. We assessed exposure to 25 forms of traumatic childhood experiences in over 5000 adults, along with measures of face discrimination, face memory, theory of mind, social motivation, and social support. Retrospectively-reported experiences of parental maltreatment in childhood (particularly physical abuse) were the most broadly and robustly associated with adult variatio

Indirect Pathways to Social Functioning in Autistic Children: The Roles of Verbal Comprehension, Task-Based Theory of Mind, and Caregiver-Perceived Theory of Mind.

PURPOSE: Mixed results exist regarding the relationships between theory of mind (ToM) and social functioning in children with autism. This inconsistency may stem from a predominant focus on explicit ToM knowledge, with insufficient consideration of applied ToM competence and verbal comprehension. Further research is needed to incorporate these factors into the understanding of social functioning. This study developed mediation models to examine the links among explicit ToM knowledge, caregiver-perceived applied ToM competence, verbal comprehension, and social functioning in children with autis

Applying Social Network Theory to Vaping in High School: Implications for Person-Centered Intervention.

BACKGROUND: Peer influence on risky behavior is particularly potent in adolescence and varies by gender. Smoking prevention programs focused on peer-group leaders have shown great promise, and a social influence model has proven effective in understanding adult smoking networks but has not been applied to adolescent vaping until 2023. This work aims to apply a social influence model to analyze vaping by gender in a high school network. METHODS: A high school's student body was emailed an online survey asking for gender, age, grade level, vape status, and the names of three friends. Custom Jav
