Accumulating evidence suggests that social anxiety is associated with biased processing of positive social information. However, it remains to be determined whether those biases are simply correlates of, or play a role in maintaining social anxiety. The current study examined whether diminished attentional allocation for positive social cues mediates the link between social anxiety and anxiety reactivity to a social-evaluative task. Forty-three undergraduate students ranging in severity of social anxiety symptoms completed a baseline measure of attentional bias for positive social cues (i.e.,

In Colorado census tracts from 2021 to 2022, there was a 15% increase in the rate of candidemia for every 0.1 unit increase in social vulnerability index (SVI) (RR 1.15, 95% CI, 1.10, 1.20). Geographic social determinants of health included in SVI may be risk factors for candidemia.

OBJECTIVE: The aim of this study was to evaluate the Social Vulnerability Index (SVI) as a predictor of long-term outcomes after injury.
BACKGROUND: The SVI is a measure used in emergency preparedness to identify need for resources in the event of a disaster or hazardous event, ranking each census tract on 15 demographic/social factors.
METHODS: Moderate-severely injured adult patients treated at 1 of 3 level-1 trauma centers were prospectively followed 6 to 14 months post-injury. These data were matched at the census tract level with overall SVI percentile rankings. Patients were stratified

Enrolled patients at the free clinic in Dunedin, New Zealand were not just financially poor, but also vulnerable. Large social inequalities are present in the United States and New Zealand. The literature on vulnerability originates predominantly from sociology and public health. This commentary discusses the concept of vulnerability within clinical practice, and makes a case for the improved recognition of patient vulnerability. Vulnerability arises from an individual's susceptibility to harm and their exposure to risks and negative events. Biographical factors commonly regarded as social vul

A survey of 2,051 pupils between Grade 4 and Grade 7 in 2003 showed that social influence or encouragement to substance use was a significant determinant of substance use risk, controlling for prior substance use and other backgrounds. Contextual stress or unhappiness among parents, classmates, and other people around operated jointly with social influence to promote substance use risk. This finding accords with a dovetail model about the extra influence due to the joining of force and receptivity to the force. Further research is necessary to corroborate the present findings obtained from a p

Bisexual women face disproportionately higher rates of sexual violence, yet factors contributing to this vulnerability remain understudied. To explain this heightened vulnerability among bisexual women, the present study employed a newly developed integrative social-ecological model to examine multilevel general and bi-specific risk and protective correlates of adult sexual victimization (SV). A cross-sectional online survey was conducted with 1,560 cisgender women (732 bisexual and 828 heterosexual women) aged 25 to 34 years in the United States. Participants responded to SV experiences and g

IMPORTANCE: Preterm birth (PTB) is a leading cause of neonatal morbidity and mortality. Understanding how sociodemographic factors alter the risk of PTB, as quantified by the Social Vulnerability Index (SVI), can guide the development of targeted interventions aimed at reducing PTB rates in economically/socially marginalized groups with increased risk.
OBJECTIVES: This study investigated the association between overall SVI and individual SVI themes on PTB (<37 weeks) and very PTB risk (<32 weeks).
DESIGN: This was a retrospective study using data from the Study of Outcomes in Mothers and Inf

BackgroundThe Social Vulnerability Index (SVI) has also been used as a measure of social determinants of health (SDOH), with several studies showing worse health outcomes in patients with higher burdens of SDOH. This systematic review focuses on the application of SVI in Emergency General Surgery (EGS), exploring the impact of patient vulnerability on individual health outcomes.MethodsA systematic literature search was conducted using PubMed, EMBASE and Web of Science. Inclusion criteria consisted of studies that were peer reviewed, obtainable in English, used SVI as a measurement applied to E

OBJECTIVES: To evaluate the relationship between social vulnerability and proximal aortic surgery outcomes.
METHODS: Single-centre, social vulnerability index (SVI)-stratified, cohort study including all patients undergoing primary proximal aortic surgery from 1997 to 2023. Social vulnerability index was calculated by patient residential Zone Improvement Plan (ZIP) code. Outcomes of interest were postoperative major adverse events (operative mortality, myocardial infarction, stroke, reoperation, haemodialysis, and tracheostomy) and all-cause mortality at time of last registry assessment.

OBJECTIVE: Identifying underlying social risk factors for neonatal intensive care unit (NICU) admission is important for designing interventions to reduce adverse outcomes. We aimed to determine whether a patient's exposure to community-level stressors as measured by the social vulnerability index (SVI) is associated with NICU admission.
STUDY DESIGN: Retrospective cohort study (2014-2018) of patients delivering a liveborn ≥ 22 weeks' gestation at a quaternary care center. Patient addresses were used to assign each individual a composite SVI and theme score. The primary exposure was a composi

BACKGROUND: Social vulnerability index (SVI) estimates the vulnerability of communities to disasters, encompassing 4 separate domains (socioeconomic, household composition and disability, minority status and language, and housing and transportation). The SVI has been linked with risk and outcomes of cardiovascular disease (CVD).
OBJECTIVES: This scoping review explored the literature between the SVI and CVD continuum, with a goal to identify gaps in understanding the impact of the SVI on CVD and to elucidate future research opportunities.
METHODS: We systematically searched 7 databases from

OBJECTIVE: Although social vulnerability has been correlated to adverse obstetrical outcomes, its definition as well as its correlation to mode of delivery vary between different studies. The aim of this study is to evaluate the association between maternal social vulnerabilities and cesarean section with the inclusion of a wide range of social vulnerability characteristics.
STUDY DESIGN: The current study is a retrospective single center cohort study in a tertiary care maternity unit between January 2020 and December 2021. All women who delivered after 24 gestational weeks were included. Mul

BACKGROUND: Evaluating social vulnerability is a challenging task. Indeed, former studies demonstrated an association between geographical social deprivation indicators, administrative indicators, and poor pregnancy outcomes.
OBJECTIVE: To evaluate the association between social vulnerability profiles, prenatal care use (PCU) and poor pregnancy outcomes (Preterm birth (PTB: <37 gestational weeks (GW)), small for gestational age (SGA), stillbirth, medical abortion, and late miscarriage).
METHODS: Retrospective single center study between January 2020 and December 2021. A total of 7643 women w

Female crack users who sought treatment are a hard to find part of the population. We studied sociodemographic and behavioral characteristics of crack users undergoing treatment in psychosocial care centers for alcohol and other drugs in six Brazilian cities. We carried out a cross-sectional study of 816 crack users and collected data with the Addiction Severity Index. Women were more likely to be in vulnerable situations: had worst levels of education, were not receiving money enough to their basic needs; more likely to be HIV positive (10.1%), to report sexual abuse (34%), and to be separate
