Paid work, unpaid work and social support: a study of the health of male and female nurses.

Paid work, unpaid work in the home and social support are important elements of the social production of health and illness, though their combined effects on both women and men have only recently become a focus of research. This paper examines their association with the health problems of nurses, presenting data from a survey of a proportional random sample of 2285 male and female nurses registered in the Province of Ontario. The data are first analysed for the full sample and then multiple regression analyses are run separately for male and female Registered Nurses. The demands of paid work (

How social stressors at work influence marital behaviors at home: An interpersonal model of work-family spillover.

Drawing on conservation of resources and related theories, this study develops and tests an interpersonal model of work-family spillover. Our model specifies how social stressors at work (i.e., workplace incivility, abusive supervision, interpersonal conflict) result in the experience of a social-based form of work-family conflict, ultimately influencing marital behaviors at home, on a daily basis. The mediating role of burnout and the moderating role of trust were also examined. A 2-week experience-sampling study with daily employee surveys at work and at home and with spousal ratings for emp

Adverse Childhood Experiences, Women Who Are Sex Trafficked, and Social Service Utilization: Implications for Social Work.

The aim of this study was to examine the associations between adverse childhood experiences (ACEs) and the high levels of social service usage by women who are sex trafficked. Fifty (N = 50) women who were sex trafficked were surveyed using purposive and snowball sampling methods. The ACEs score for respondents ranged from 2 to 10 with an average score of 7.4 (SD = 2.3). Emotional and sexual abuse tied at 88 percent as the most frequently cited ACEs among the women in this sample. The prevalence of ACEs was significantly higher in this sample compared with known estimates in similar population

Short-term effects of social stressors at work on rumination and physical symptoms in social workers.

The present study focuses on social stressors at work and the development of physical symptoms in social workers on a daily basis. In a seven-day diary study it was anticipated that daily rumination functions as a mediator, linked to additional daily physical symptoms in individuals. Before and after work, 81 social workers completed daily questions on social stressors, rumination, and physical symptoms. Multilevel analyses of up to 391 daily measurements revealed that more intense social stressors predicted more rumination, as well as physical symptoms. Rumination anteceded higher physical sy

Work-related grief and bereavement experiences of social and community service workers working with people experiencing social disadvantage: a rapid scoping review.

BACKGROUND: While an extensive body of research in palliative care exists on the experiences of grief and bereavement among family caregivers, much of this research is based on normative assumptions of who family caregivers are - housed, financially stable, and with extended family and/or friends to draw on for support. Research shows that in contexts of social disadvantage(e.g., homelessness and poverty, mental health and substance use concerns, racism and discrimination), social and community workers can become 'defacto' family and provide caregiving support at the end of life. Yet, there is

Social working memory and its distinctive link to social cognitive ability: an fMRI study.

Engaging social working memory (SWM) during effortful social cognition has been associated with neural activation in two neurocognitive systems: the medial frontoparietal system and the lateral frontoparietal system. However, the respective roles played by these systems in SWM remain unknown. Results from this study demonstrate that only the medial frontoparietal system supports the social cognitive demands managed in SWM. In contrast, the lateral frontoparietal system supports the non-social cognitive demands that are needed for task performance, but that are independent of the social cogniti

Updating the emotional content of working memory in social anxiety.

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVES: Cognitive accounts suggest that information processing biases have an important role in the etiology and maintenance of social anxiety (SA). Empirical evidence support this notion has been established in variety of cognitive domains. Yet, it is still not known how social anxious individuals process emotional content in working memory (WM). Maladaptive WM updating may influence emotion regulation and anxiety during social situations in SA. Thus, the aim of the present study was to explore biases when updating emotional content in SA. METHODS: 31 participants with hig

An exploration of social support as a factor in the return-to-work process.

Despite evidence that inter-personal relationships are important in human resource management, little is understood about the nature of workplace social support in a disability context, or what features of support are important to the success of return-to-work programs. The purpose of this qualitative study was to explore workplace disability support from worker and supervisory perspectives and to identify salient features for work re-entry. A total of 8 supervisors and 18 previously injured workers from a range of work units in a Canadian municipality were interviewed, and their views concern

Job stress and health: the role of social support at work.

Data are presented on the use of social resources to reduce the negative effects of perceived job stress on the health of 26 psychiatric technicians who cared for severely and profoundly retarded residents of a state institution. Data were collected by participant observation, semistructured interviews, and the self-administered Cornell Medical Index. Sources of job stress were found to stem not from problems associated with the care of the retarded but rather from staff members' inability to control other critical aspects of their work. Staff with supportive work-based social networks reporte

[Social and work rehabilitation of patients with spinal fractures and their sequelae].

In order to study possible social-working rehabilitation of people with fractures of the backbone and their sequellae complex, mainly dynamic, clinico-laboratory investigations were carried out in 224 people with non-complicated fractures of the thoracic and lumbar sections of the vertebral column within 1--15 and more years after trauma. More than 30% of the patients were considered to be stable invalids at the primary examination. The social-working rehabilitation of people with sequellae of the backbone fractures is based on the state of compensation of the disturbed functions of the verteb

Performance of Working Memory Updating in Socially Anxious Individuals.

Working memory updating plays a critical role in executive function. Few studies explored the working memory updating in socially anxious individuals. In this study, we wanted to explore the working memory updating in socially anxious individuals. We studied this issue by instructing participants to perform an emotional 2-back task, and recording their response time and accuracy. We found that high socially anxious individuals showed significant longer response time in positive word condition than that of negative and neutral words. But there was no significant difference in word type in low s

Determinants of work ability among health and social services workers with work-related COVID-19 infection in Germany.

BACKGROUND: The COVID-19 pandemic has posed significant challenges for health workers worldwide. While previous studies have primarily focused on acute COVID-19 symptoms, limited research has explored the long-term impacts on the work ability of health professionals. This study aims to identify determinants influencing the work ability of health and social services workers with work-related COVID-19 infection in Germany, with the aim of developing hypotheses for future studies. METHODS: Data from a quantitative longitudinal study involving 1,300 health and social services workers in Germany we

Coworker incivility and incivility targets' work effort and counterproductive work behaviors: the moderating role of supervisor social support.

This study addresses the relationships between coworker incivility and both work effort and counterproductive work behaviors (CWBs). It was expected that employees who experienced high levels of incivility from their coworkers would report reductions in work effort and higher levels of CWBs. Also, based on the emotion-centered model of work behaviors (Spector & Fox, 2002), it was expected that negative emotions would mediate the relationships between coworker incivility and both work effort and CWBs. Finally, we examined supervisor social support as a moderator of relationships between negativ

Work engagement among breast cancer survivors and the referents: the importance of optimism and social resources at work.

INTRODUCTION: Despite a growing number of cancer survivors returning to work, little is known about their well-being at work and the work and personal characteristics related to it. The aim of the present study was to investigate personal resources (optimism and pessimism) and job-related resources (organizational climate, social support and avoidance behaviour) as antecedents of work engagement among female breast cancer survivors and their referents. METHODS: A community-based postal survey was conducted among female breast cancer survivors and their referents. The final study population co

Counternarratives: An Antiracist Approach in Social Work Education, Practice, and Research.

Given renewed attention to racial equity in the social work profession, the authors suggest the use of counternarratives, an established tool of critical race theory, as an accessible method to challenge racism and examine privilege in social work education, practice, and research. Counternarratives use the technique of storytelling to elevate the lived experiences of marginalized individuals and communities and invite the listener into critical reflection about dominant, privileged discourses. The ultimate goal of counternarratives is the achievement of racial equity. The authors provide cont

Reconciling a Broken Heritage: Developing Mental Health Social Work in Guyana.

Guyana's colonial past has left a trail of economic instability, racial polarization, and physical and mental trauma. Despite the progress made since Guyana's independence in 1966, the remnants of this colonial past continue to shape present-day Guyana. As a result, violence and trauma continue to impact the mental health of the population. This is manifest in endemic problems of domestic violence and racialized social divisions which have created the conditions for rates of suicide which are amongst the highest in the world. The formal mental health provision which exists in Guyana is based p

Implications of American Indian gambling for social work research and practice.

Since the 1988 passage of the Indian Gaming and Regulatory Act (IGRA), American Indian tribal communities have rapidly opened up casinos. American Indian participation in recreational gambling has increased, resulting in an increase in problem and pathological gambling. However, increased revenues from gaming have significantly benefited tribes. Background information on the Supreme Court case that led to passage of the IGRA and subsequently the opening of casinos on Indian reservations is provided. Data are presented on American Indian gambling studies that explore the impact of gambling on t

Social welfare, genetic welfare? Boundary-work in the IVF/PGD clinic.

Through the lens of the 'welfare of the child' assessment, this paper explores how staff working in the area of in vitro fertilisation and preimplantation genetic diagnosis (IVF/PGD) balance reflexive relations of legitimacy and accountability between the public and private spheres, and between medicine, the citizen and the state. The wider research of which this analysis is a part uses multiple methods to study two National Health Service Assisted Conception Units in England. Research methods used included observation clinics and interviews with staff from a range of disciplines. We illustrat
