This study used thematic narrative analysis to develop an understanding of how older adults with ongoing symptoms of schizophrenia who have experienced homelessness understand and express their life course and present-time narratives of homelessness, housing, and home. Findings were developed from 26 individual interviews with five study participants and 33 systematic field observations of their homes, treatment environments and neighborhoods. Presentation of the participants' narratives illuminates how participants experienced shared challenges in unique ways and the meaning they assigned to

PURPOSE OF REVIEW: To review recent literature evaluating psychiatric and cognitive symptoms in dystonia, the two non-motor symptom groups most frequently evaluated in dystonia research and recognised in clinical practice.
RECENT FINDINGS: Recent work has embedded clinical recognition of psychiatric symptoms in dystonia, with depressive and anxiety-related symptoms routinely observed to be the most common. Less explored symptoms, such as self-harm, suicidal ideation, and substance abuse, represent newer areas of investigation, with initial work suggesting higher rates than the background popu

Compares the coping profiles of 11 samples (total N = 1,298) of individuals experiencing psychiatric, physical health, work, or family problems. Comparisons are made in individuals with and without anxiety and depression to control for the effects of distress. Coping was similar for samples in similar problem categories but different for samples in different categories. Psychiatric patients made more use of avoidance and less use of social supports than individuals in the other categories. Samples with physical health problems were among the most frequent users of social supports. Individuals

Louis-Victor Marcé, MD, of Paris compiled an extensive monograph published in 1858 that surveyed knowledge of psychiatric disorders of women during and following pregnancy. This work has largely been ignored for 150 years. We summarize here what is known about Marcé's life and work, and include selected passages from his monograph. Marcé provides extensive clinical descriptions of syndromes, with 79 case examples, and summarizes etiological theories and treatments characteristic of his era and place. This work was based on cases that he personally evaluated and on other reported cases, all dra

OBJECTIVES: Unemployment has a strong negative impact on quality of life and on the further course of the disease of mentally disordered individuals. Therefore, vocational rehabilitation programmes are necessary to help people with mental disorders to obtain work. There is increasing scientific evidence concerning positive predictors for vocational integration. This paper intends to give an overview about established predictors for successful integration.
METHODS: "Pubmed" was searched for studies on psychiatric vocational rehabilitation programmes published between 1997 and 2007, which had t

Social phobia is classified as an anxiety disorder in psychiatric nomenclature. It represents a fear of performance or social interaction that significantly interferes with a person's social or occupational functioning. The author takes issue with the fact that social phobia is considered by many professionals to be a mental illness that is often treated best with medication. Social phobia can be conceptualized from a social work perspective as an extreme shyness that can be overcome with cognitive learning and behavioral rehearsal. This article reviews the biopsychosocial causes of social pho

The number of persons suffering from chronic mental disease but living outside the psychiatric hospital in the community, is rising, resulting in an increasing demand for facilities for occupation, occupational therapy and rehabilitation and for paid employment. The past few years have seen a distinct increase in the number of sheltered workplaces for the mentally ill. This development has also led to qualitative differentiation in the offers. In the region of Westphalia there are currently some 940 work places in special departments for the mentally handicapped at workshops for the disabled.

Clinical research on the purely obsessional patient is considerably less developed than that for compulsive ritualizers or obsessive compulsives with mixed features. A single case investigation of exposure therapy in the treatment of obsessive ruminations is presented. Treatment involved exposing the patient to a variety of stimuli related to obsessional thoughts including reading, writing, and listening to such content. The patient's immediate response to treatment was favorable, with improvements being maintained at two-year follow-up.

Among twenty patients with narcolepsy intelligence was normal and no characteristic personality or psychopathology was found. A family history of psychiatric disorder was present in five and a past personal history in ten. Eight had a current psychiatric disorder and twelve either a current or past psychiatric disorder. Chronic sexual disorder was present in eleven. Arousal appeared to be the mechanism by which emotions precipitated symptoms. Ten patients were found to have had difficulties at work, in marriage or in social life.

Though social support in the broader population is related to better psychosocial outcomes, little work has examined the relationship between social support and patient-reported outcomes among women with infertility. The purpose of this study was to investigate whether perceived social support was associated with psychiatric symptoms, disordered eating, and substance use among women with an infertility diagnosis. Individuals who received a diagnosis of female-factor infertility (N = 188) completed measures of perceived social support, psychiatric symptoms, disordered eating, and substance use.

BACKGROUND: The Covid-19 Pandemic has had a significant impact on psychophysical well-being and the ability to work productively in contexts concerning people's physical and mental care. The helping professions involved have seen an increase in stress levels, a sense of helplessness, fear, pain and social isolation. They are anchored to the hope of being able to return to their normality.
METHOD: In this study, 87 mental health operators were evaluated, divided into nurses, psychiatric rehabilitation technicians, educators, social workers, psychologists and doctors, working in two psychiatric

Through a critical examination of the psychiatric profession's heavy reliance on the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders, the authors explore the central role of diagnosis in the theory and practice of psychiatry. The set of beliefs that have guided the psychiatric profession since the creation of DSM-III are viewed as being tied to the new extension of the biopsychiatric medical model. From a sociological perspective, the authors address the issue of psychiatric nosology with reference to practice styles and professional dominance, and consider the impact of DSM's intrinsic

Epidemiologic surveys conducted across Europe indicate that the lifetime prevalence of social anxiety disorder in the general population is close to 7%. The disorder in adulthood rarely presents in its 'pure' form and 70-80% of patients have at least one other psychiatric disorder, most commonly depression. Social anxiety disorder is a risk factor for the development of depression and alcohol/substance use or dependence, especially in cases with an early onset (< 15 years). Individuals with social anxiety disorder have significant functional impairment, notably in the areas of initiation and m

BACKGROUND: Mental health literacy (MHL) is crucial to address issues related to mental illness. Nurses' MHL is even more important because they are expected to deal with both the physical and psychological consequences of mental disorders.
OBJECTIVE: This study investigated the level, discrepancy, and characteristics of MHL among Chinese nurses from both public general and psychiatric hospitals; identified influential factors; and explored the relationship between MHL and mental health status.
METHODS: Using a stratified cluster sampling method to select participants, a cross-sectional surv
