Parent Emotion Socialization Behaviors and Adolescent Psychological Symptoms in Families Impacted by Tourette Syndrome.

Parent emotion socialization (ES) behaviors, encompassing supportive and unsupportive responses to adolescent emotions, are an important factor in shaping youths’ psychological development, but their impact in adolescents with Tourette syndrome (TS) has been largely overlooked. While tics are the defining symptom of TS, psychological comorbidities are widespread in this population and more strongly predict quality of life than tic severity. As such, there is an urgent clinical need to identify risk factors for psychopathology in adolescents with TS. Parent ES behaviors in families affected by

Emotion Socialization Under One Roof: How Parental Response Patterns Shape Adolescent Emotional Well-Being.

(1) Background: This study used latent profile analysis (LPA) to investigate family patterns of paternal and maternal responses to adolescents' discrete emotions (happiness, sadness, and anger) and examined the relationship between these profiles and demographic factors, as well as adolescents' emotion adjustment (emotion regulation and depressive symptoms). (2) Methods: A sample of 666 adolescents reported parental responses and their emotional adjustment; their mothers provided family information. (3) Results: (a) The LPA identified four profiles for adolescent happiness, including high enha

Parental emotion socialization and internalizing problems in childhood and adolescence: A meta-analytic review.

Anxiety and depression symptoms and disorders are the leading child mental health problems in western societies. This systematic review evaluated how parental emotion socialization (ES) relates to children's internalizing problems (from birth to age 18 years). Three meta-analyses, evaluating supportive (k = 50, N = 10,698), nonsupportive ES behaviors (k = 47, N = 10,970), and elaboration (k = 6, N = 867) were conducted. Supportive ES behaviors had a very small negative association with children's internalizing problems (r = -.06), nonsupportive ES behaviors had a medium positive association wi

Sibling socialization of alcohol use during adolescence: An integrated model of sibling influence processes.

BACKGROUND AND AIMS: Research demonstrates that siblings, especially older siblings, make unique contributions to adolescents' substance use above and beyond shared genetics and shared parenting. Older siblings' influences on younger adolescent siblings' alcohol use operate through both direct and indirect pathways. Using three waves of longitudinal data, the present study tested an integrated model of sibling influence processes focused on the linkages between older adolescent siblings' earlier alcohol use and younger adolescent siblings' later alcohol use. DESIGN: Longitudinal study using d

Inclusive Socialization? The Relationships between Parents' and Their Child's Attitudes toward Students with Disabilities.

Promoting social and school inclusion of children with disabilities has been associated with their health-related quality of life. This study aimed to analyze the connection between parents and children's attitudes toward disabilities as one factor contributing to the inclusion and well-being of individuals with disabilities. Three types of disabilities-i.e., attitudes toward a child with a sensory disability (hearing), a child with an intellectual disability (Down syndrome), and a child with problems with aggressiveness and angry outbursts (behavioral problems)-were examined. A sample of 598

Maternal socialization of emotion and the development of emotion regulation in early adolescent girls.

Regulation of negative emotions is a core competency of child development. Parental emotion socialization profoundly influences later capacity to regulate negative affect in childhood and adolescence. The present study examined the effects of maternal emotion socialization on the development of emotion regulation in the context of a longitudinal study of 210 mother-daughter dyads. Dyads completed a conflict resolution task when the child was age 11 years during which maternal warmth and hostility were coded. At ages 11 to 13 years, mothers completed self-report measures of supportive and nonsu

A qualitative examination of familial racial-ethnic socialization experiences among multiracial American emerging adults.

This qualitative interview study investigated the types of parental racial-ethnic socialization messages received by Multiracial American youth over the course of their development. The Multiracial population in America is the largest demographic group among individuals under the age of 18 (Saulny, 2011), but there is a dearth of research about the development of this rapidly growing population. Multiracial youth are members of multiple racial-ethnic groups. Thus, racial-ethnic socialization is particularly complex for Multiracial families because parents typically have different racial backgr

Social anxiety as a basis for friendship selection and socialization in adolescents' social networks.

Socially anxious children and adolescents have previously been found to have friends with similarly socially anxious, withdrawn behavioral characteristics. How peers might socialize social anxiety over time has, however, not been thoroughly investigated. We examined this in a sample of 834 youths (339 girls and 495 boys; M=14.29), followed for 3 years. We used the social network analysis software SIENA to analyze the data. The results showed that youths who were socially anxious were less popular and chose fewer friends in the network. They also tended to choose friends who were socially anxio

Financial socialization of first-year college students: the roles of parents, work, and education.

This cross-sectional study tests a conceptual financial socialization process model, specifying four-levels that connect anticipatory socialization during adolescence to young adults' current financial learning, to their financial attitudes, and to their financial behavior. A total of 2,098 first-year college students (61.9% females) participated in the survey, representing a diverse ethnic group (32.6% minority participation: Hispanic 14.9%, Asian/Asian American 9%, Black 3.4%, Native American 1.8% and other 3.5%). Structural equation modeling indicated that parents, work, and high school fin

Organizational Socialization Among New Graduate Nurses: A Longitudinal Study Using Latent Profile and Transition Analyses.

AIM: To identify the latent profiles of adjustment outcomes associated with organizational socialization among new graduate nurses at the end of the preceptorship period and approximately 10 months later, and to examine transitions in profile membership and to resignation. BACKGROUND: Organizational socialization is critical for new graduate nurses to acquire the knowledge, skills, and professional identity required to function effectively within the organization. Most previous studies have employed a variable-centered approach, which may obscure heterogeneity in adjustment patterns associate

Linking financial socialization to financial well-being: A dual-stage SEM-ANN approach in India.

The present research focuses on the impact of financial socialization on the financial well-being within the framework of an emerging economy, i.e., India, with particular attention to individuals navigating the early stages of financial independence. The study is carried out by adopting two stages of analysis using data from a survey conducted among 375 respondents. The hypothesized relationships were first examined using Partial Least Squares Structural Equation Modelling (PLS-SEM), and then an Artificial Neural Network (ANN) was used to validate the findings and assess the relative signific

Direct Socialization of Suicide Risk in Adolescent Friendships Is Moderated by Non-Suicidal Self-Injury.

Given the importance of friendships and the increased risk for suicide during adolescence, potential socialization of suicidality among peers is essential to examine. Data were obtained from 93 friendship dyads (N = 186) in a community-based, longitudinal study of adolescents (Mage = 15.68, SD = 1.49, 69.9% female, 86.6% white). Adolescents' and friends' suicide risk and frequency of non-suicidal self-injury (NSSI) were assessed at baseline and at 3-month and 6-month follow-up assessments. Cross-lagged, Actor-Partner Interdependence Models (CL-APIM) examined socialization effects over time wit

A Narrative Review of Men's Mental Health: The Role of Stigma and Gender-Differentiated Socialization.

Research on men's mental health points out gender differences in help-seeking and access to care. Traditional masculine norms (i.e., emotional repression, self-reliance, "being strong") and gender bias might conceal distress, delay treatment, and help to explain higher burdens of addiction, violence, and suicide alongside lower recorded affective/anxiety diagnoses. An exploratory narrative review was conducted. PubMed, Scopus, and Web of Science were searched for 2015-2025 studies using MeSH and terms on men's mental health, masculinities, and stigma. Eleven studies identified attitudinal barr

Stay cognitively and socially active with me: a six-month study of a socialization service.

50% of older adults over 60 years old are experiencing social isolation. Assistive technology can provide solutions that promote the connection with their families and other stakeholders. In this context, this paper presents a pilot study of a socialization service with 3 functions tested by 10 older adults and 10 informal caregivers. After a short training, participants were requested to use the system in their daily life for six months. At the beginning (T0) and at the end (T6) of the trial, qualitative structured questionnaires were addressed to investigate training, usability, acceptance (

Emotion regulation as a mediator of the relation between emotion socialization and deliberate self-harm.

This study examined (a) whether retrospective reports of specific parent responses to sadness (i.e., reward, punishment, neglect, override, magnification) were related to deliberate self-harm (DSH) and (b) whether difficulties regulating emotions (i.e., difficulties monitoring, evaluating, and modifying emotions) mediated those relations. One hundred eighteen college students completed measures of parental emotion socialization, emotion regulation difficulties, and DSH. Parental reward and override of sadness were directly related to lower DSH scores. Parental punishment and neglect of sadness

Profiles of Asian American parent- and adolescent-reported ethnic-racial socialization: A person-centered analysis.

Ethnic-racial socialization (ERS), the communication of parent worldviews about race and ethnicity to children, is important for youth development. Most research only examines parent or youth reports of these socialization practices in isolation, and few have focused on Asian American families. The present study addresses these gaps, incorporating both parent and youth reports of ethnic-racial socialization practices in Asian American families. Participants were 466 Asian American parents (Mage = 46.52 years, SD = 5.21), including 317 Chinese Americans, 118 Korean Americans, and 31 Filipino Am

Determinants of Parental Emotion Socialization Behaviors: Insights From a Large-Scale Population-Based Family Study.

Parental emotion socialization behaviors (ESBs) are essential for child development and are typically understood as influenced by factors related to three domains: the parent, the child, and the family context. However, it remains unclear how parents' childhood experiences with ESBs should be represented within these conceptual frameworks. Addressing the complexity of ESBs, the present study examined predictors across three theoretically derived domains and additionally included parents' recollected ESBs as a parent-level factor. Questionnaire data were collected from a large population-based

Parental racial-ethnic socialization as a moderator of Latinx youth's cultural orientation and family dynamics.

As ethnoracial diversity continues to reshape the sociocultural landscape of the United States, adolescents from immigrant-origin families increasingly navigate multiple cultural reference points-often extending beyond the traditional heritage-host (i.e., heritage culture and White host culture) cultural paradigm. Most research on cultural orientations remains grounded in this binary framework, overlooking youth's potential engagement with other minoritized cultural streams, such as Black American culture. At the same time, less is known about how youth's multidimensional cultural orientations

Management of food socialization for children with Prader-Willi Syndrome: An exploration study in Malaysia.

This study aims to explore the food management strategies among caregivers/family members of children with Prader-Willi Syndrome (PWS) using the lens of 'familialisation' of a health problem and the sociology of food socialization. Food intake among individuals with PWS is a main concern for parents, caregivers, and medical practitioners as it affects their physical, mental, and social well-being throughout their lives. Earlier studies on PWS and food intake centered around dietary management, dietary intake and growth, nutritional treatment and pharmacological approaches, nutritional phases,
