Where has the quest for conception taken us? Lessons from anthropology and sociology.

Louise Brown, the world's first test-tube baby, was born more than 40 years ago in England. For Louise Brown's infertile mother, Lesley, in-vitro fertilization (IVF) was the 'hope technology' which allowed her to overcome her tubal infertility after 9 years of heart-breaking involuntary childlessness. Since then, IVF has travelled to diverse global locations, where millions of individuals and couples have embarked on technologically assisted 'quests for conception'. After 40 years of IVF, where has the quest for conception taken us? This article outlines seven major global trajectories - namel

Sociology meets genetics: sociogenetic implications for future management of hypertension and heart failure.

Hypertension and heart failure contribute significantly to morbidity and mortality in the United States. Suboptimal control of these disease processes is multifactorial and involves poorly understood mechanisms affected by the environment (socioeconomic factors) and genetics (cell biology). Dietary sodium is an illustrative case. Although physicians intuitively accept that sodium affects renal and cardiovascular physiology, the complex overlay of genetics, environment, and culture is not practically addressed to make a meaningful difference in patient care. Optimal control of hypertension and

Toward a digital sociology of artrepreneurship: understanding artistic entrepreneurship in the platform society.

Artistic entrepreneurship is a rapidly changing field due to the growing dominance of social media. Digital technologies have opened up new avenues for artists to produce, market, and monetize their creative work, and have also remediated the social mechanisms, identities, and structures through which artistic value is created and recognised. Research on social media has so far focused on entrepreneurial, marketing and technological aspects, particularly platform adoption, digital marketing and economic performance. As a result, little attention has been given to understanding artrepreneurship

'What are you in for?' The neglected role of the offence in prison sociology.

Why have prison scholars so seldom discussed what people in prison think about their crimes? This article addresses a striking gap: the omission of the originating reason for incarceration - the offence - from sociological analyses of carceral life. We examine its past treatment in prison scholarship and argue for recentring it. Drawing on three case studies, we show how the offence actively shapes daily experience, institutional engagement, and social dynamics. Our framework explores how attention to the offence can illuminate what prisons are like, what they do through moral communication, a

Sociological differences between women and men: implications for autoimmunity.

There are an enormous number of incorrect stereotypes that characterize the differences between women and men. Indeed, nearly all of these stereotypes are based on cultural inaccuracies and faulty data without consideration of biology and the distinct sociological differences between genders. Sociological differences are those that relate to the development, structure, interaction and behavior of organized groups of human beings, or societies, and their values and beliefs. Gender is a social construct referring "to the culturally and historically based differences in the roles, attitudes and b

Why or Who Waits for Marriage? The Sociological Rationale for Chastity.

This article evaluates the sociological aspects of saving sex for marriage. Promiscuity is linked to high rates of sexually transmitted infections, abortion, and high rates of divorce, which has multiple negative consequences on children. Single motherhood and cohabitation are also associated with negative consequences for children including lower emotional well-being, emotional problems, poorer physical health, and poorer academic achievement. Cohabitation, which is becoming increasingly common either before marriage or without marriage, is associated with a higher frequency of intimate partn

Engram Studies: A Call for Historical, Philosophical, and Sociological Approaches.

In this chapter, we identify three distinct avenues of research on the philosophical, historical, and sociopolitical dimensions of engram research. First, we single out the need to refine philosophical understandings of memory within neuroscientific research on the engram. Specifically, we question the place of constructivist and preservationist philosophical claims on memory in the formulation of the engram concept and its operationalization in contemporary neuroscience research. Second, we delve into the received historiography of the engram claiming its disappearance after Richard Semon's (

Cognitive, affective and sociological predictors of school performance in mathematics.

Mathematics is a key school subject for some of the most lucrative and economically important careers. Low mathematics performance in school is associated with low psychometric intelligence, family socioeconomic status (SES), specific mathematical abilities, and high mathematics anxiety. We used a sample of Hungarian schoolchildren (N = 102, mean age = 12.3 years) to directly compare the predictive power of general intelligence, specific mathematical abilities measured by the Pedagogical Examination of Dyscalculia (DPV), mathematics anxiety, and socioeconomic status for mathematics grades. Living with motor neurone disease: an insider's sociological perspective.

This article is a discussion between two former colleagues and longstanding friends about the lived experience of illness and disability. In January 2013, Kirsten Harley, a promising early career sociologist was diagnosed with motor neurone disease (MND), a degenerative neurological condition with a typical life expectancy of 2-3 years. In this article, which is part interview and part shared reflection, we consider how Kirsten's knowledge of sociology has shaped her responses to the illness. We 'discuss' the process of meaning making, health system navigation, interactions with health profess

Choose and Book: a sociological analysis of 'resistance' to an expert system.

In 2004, the English Department of Health introduced a technology (Choose and Book) designed to help general practitioners and patients book hospital outpatient appointments. It was anticipated that remote booking would become standard practice once technical challenges were overcome. But despite political pressure and financial incentives, Choose and Book remained unpopular and was generally used reluctantly if at all. Policymakers framed this as a problem of 'clinician resistance'. We considered Choose and Book from a sociological perspective. Our dataset, drawn from a qualitative study of c

[Psycho-sociological profile of a series of 850 sperm donors].

We present a retrospective study on a series of 850 sperm donors who came to CECOS-Lyon for the last 17 years. This study allows to determine different parameters on the social situation of donors: age, socioprofessional category, number of children etc. The donor population presents a great homogeneity in its constant renewal. From these data it seems easier to adapt the information messages to a certain population of men to make them aware of sperm donation.

Opening the "Black Box": Functions of the Frontal Lobes and Their Implications for Sociology.

Previous research has provided theoretical frameworks for building inter-disciplinary bridges between sociology and the neurosciences; yet, more anatomically, or functionally focused perspectives offering detailed information to sociologists are largely missing from the literature. This manuscript addresses this gap by offering a comprehensive review of the functions of the frontal lobes, arguably the most important brain region involved in various "human" skills ranging from abstract thinking to language. The paper proposes that the functions of the frontal lobe sub-regions can be divided int

[Dental sociology as the background and validation framework of childhood oral health promotion programs].

Childhood oral health represents a significant global public health concern shaped by biological, behavioral, and social determinants. Dental diseases, particularly dental caries, gingivitis, and periodontal conditions, remain among the most prevalent chronic diseases worldwide and are strongly associated with lifestyle factors, health literacy, socioeconomic status, and access to preventive services. This theoretical review aims to introduce the conceptual framework of dental sociology and highlight the importance of integrating social and behavioral perspectives into childhood oral health pr
