To evaluate the function of deglutition quantitatively, radionuclide transit in the and upper esophagus was examined. Ten ml of water containing 185 MBq 99mTc pertechnetate was put into the mouth and isotopic counts were measured every 0.2 second in the oral cavity, upper and lower cervical esophagus, and upper mediastinum. A case of the left superior vena cava draining to the coronary sinus without associated intracardiac shunt was initially demonstrated by first pass radionuclide angiography. The patient had atypical chest pain for 8 years, and had sick sinus syndrome with a long cardiac pause. Cardiac catheterization confirmed this diagnosis, and a transvenous pacemaker was successfully implanted through the left superior vena cava.

A teenager with massive rectal bleeding had a positive 99mTc-pertechnetate abdominal scan. At laparotomy, an arteriovenous malformation of the jejunum was found. There was no evidence of a Meckel's diverticulum. The persistent problem of the positive technetium scan warrants increased utilization of preoperative visceral angiography.

A 23-year-old male presented with occult gastrointestinal bleeding and iron deficiency anemia. A Tc-99m pertechnetate abdominal scan was positive and surgery revealed an adenocarcinoma of the cecum. No Meckel's diverticulum was identified. This is the first reported association of an abnormal Tc-99m pertechnetate scan in adenocarcinoma. Carcinoma of the right colon should be considered in any patient with a positive pertechnetate scan for Meckel's diverticulum and suggestive clinical features.

AIM: The purpose of the present study was to assess the utility of the intraoperative gamma probe technique in a group of 128 patients suffering from primary hyperparathyroidism (PH).
METHODS: In view of surgery, these patients were homogeneously subjected to a diagnostic protocol comprising double tracer scintigraphy ((99mTc)-Pertecnetate/(99mTc)-MIBI) and neck echotomography, carried out in a single session. They were then all operated on by the same surgical team.

We present the case of a 2-year-old girl with a recent history of rectorrhagia, the latest episode occurring two days ago. She was referred for 99m Tc-pertechnetate scan to detect ectopic gastric mucosa. In the initial phases, a Meckel diverticulum was identified in the mid-lower abdomen. Neonates with congenital hypothyroidism often demonstrate ectopic thyroid tissue. However, 2 sites of abnormally located thyroid tissue are exceptionally rare with only one other published case on a neonate. The authors present a unique case of a neonate who was found to have congenital hypothyroidism on laboratory screening; Tc-99m pertechnetate scintigraphy demonstrated 2 sites of abnormal uptake: one at the base of the tongue and the other in the midline at the expected location of the thyroid bed.

The effect of acupuncture stimulation at Zusanli point (ST.36) on the bioavailability of radio-pharmaceutical 99mTc-sodium pertechnetate (Na99mTcO4) in Wistar rats was investigated. The authors encountered a sibling case of Meckel's diverticulum in 9 and 11 year old Japanese boys. They were diagnosed using contrast examination and 99mTc-pertechnetate scintigraphy before operation. The familial tendency is one in every 2500 families. Only 15 cases of familial occurrence have been reported by five authors.

The diagnosis of a symptomatic Meckel's diverticulum in an adult is uncommon. Still more infrequent is the presentation of a bleeding Meckel's diverticulum after childhood. We present a case report of a 24-year-old male with gastrointestinal hemorrhage secondary to a Meckel's diverticulum containing ectopic gastric mucosa. With the exception of a Meckel's Tc 99m pertechnetate scan, all other diagnostic procedures including Tc 99m-labeled red cell scan and angiography were negative.

A 28-year-old man presented with paresthesias, fatigue, central cyanosis, and erythrocytosis. A first pass flow study with Tc-99m as free pertechnetate was done, among other tests, to exclude a central shunt when a persistent left superior vena cava was incidentally detected. Both labeled RBC and Meckel's scans have been used to evaluate pediatric patients with gastrointestinal bleeding, sometimes sequentially in the same patient.
