The number of recognized epithelioid soft tissue neoplasms continues to increase and includes epithelioid schwannoma, sclerosing epithelioid fibrosarcoma, and emerging entities such as sarcomas with GLI1 alterations. Here, we describe 23 cases of a previously unrecognized entity, provisionally termed "pseudoendocrine sarcoma." Pseudoendocrine sarcoma is a rare, distinctive tumor of uncertain lineage with a predilection for paravertebral soft tissue in older adults. Fifteen patients (65%) were male and 8 were female. Age at presentation ranged from 29 to 78 years (median: 62 y). Nineteen tumors

Soft tissue tumors with smooth muscle differentiation are rare in pediatric patients. Despite often showing morphologic features sufficient for classification as "leiomyosarcoma" in adults (eg, high cellularity and mitotic activity), clinical follow-up has shown only indolent behavior. The pathological features of recently reported SRF-rearranged "cellular myofibromas/myopericytomas," typically occurring in children, overlap with those of true smooth muscle tumors. We studied a large series of pediatric tumors with morphologic and immunohistochemical evidence of smooth muscle differentiation,

Mesenchymal neoplasms driven by protein kinases represent an increasing group with a broad clinicopathologic and genetic spectrum. Recently, tumors harboring a GAB1::ABL1 fusion have been reported, resulting in constitutive activation of the non-receptor tyrosine kinase ABL1. We describe six cases (one previously reported) investigated by fusion gene analysis and DNA-methylation profiling. Tumors were from three males and three females aged 7-71 years and arose in the neck, axilla, lower back, thigh, and digits. Lesions were excised. Available follow-up was uneventful. Neoplasms were circumscr

With the increasing use of next generation sequencing in soft tissue pathology, particularly in neoplasms not fitting any World Health Organization (WHO) category, the spectrum of EWSR1 fusion-associated soft tissue neoplasms has been expanding significantly. Although recurrent EWSR1::ATF1 fusions were initially limited to a triad of mesenchymal neoplasms including clear cell sarcoma of soft tissue, angiomatoid fibrous histiocytoma and malignant gastrointestinal neuroectodermal tumor (MGNET), this family has been expanding. We herein describe 4 unclassified extra-abdominal soft tissue (n = 3)

INTRODUCTION: Lipoma is a benign soft tissue neoplasm that may contain mesenchymal elements, as a result of metaplastic process. Ossification in benign and malignant soft tissue tumors can also manifest due to metaplastic process.
CASE PRESENTATION: A 45 year old woman presented with a large thigh mass. The mass was developed one and a half year ago which insidiously increased in size and was associated with movement restriction. Radiological findings revealed soft tissue neoplasm on antero-medial aspect of thigh encircling the femur and displacing adjacent muscles. Fine trabeculations were s

Multinucleate cell angiohistiocytoma (MCA) represent an uncommon benign fibrohistiocytic vascular lesion that sometimes may go undiagnosed because of its clinical and histopathological similarities with benign fibrous histiocytoma and other soft-tissue neoplasms especially when localized on oral cavity or semi mucosa. We report the case of a solitary multinucleate cell angiohistiocytoma on the lower lip of a 46-year-old woman suggesting that this rare lesion should be considered in the differential diagnosis of the oral soft-tissue neoplasms.

The present study describes a series of primary soft tissue lymphomas, including immunohistochemical characterization by tissue microarray and cytogenetic profiling. Formalin-fixed, paraffin-embedded tissue samples were collected from patients who underwent soft tissue biopsy. Cases were selected according to the definition of primary soft tissue lymphoma as a lymphoid malignancy arising in soft tissues without evidence of other nodal or extranodal localization for a period of at least 6 months. Our series comprised seven patients with a mean age of 72 years. There were three diffuse large B-c

The paratestis (PT) is defined by the testicular tunics, epididymis, spermatic cord, rete testis, and embryonic remnants. It gives rise to a large diversity of pathologies, including those of soft tissue, which may prompt orchiectomy. We performed a 17-year search of our database for orchiectomies for a PT soft-tissue mass. In a total of 4741 orchiectomy specimens, 138 orchiectomies were performed for primary neoplastic or nonneoplastic masses of the PT soft tissue or had an incidental PT soft-tissue mass. Of these, 65.9% were neoplastic. The mean age was 40.2 years (range: <1 to 87 years) and

Penile soft tissue tumors comprise 5% of tumors at this site and most have been reported as isolated case reports. The purpose of this review is to aid the practicing surgical pathologist in distinguishing penile soft tissue tumors, such as sarcomatoid squamous cell carcinoma, from other prognostically and therapeutically important entities in the differential diagnosis. Clinical presentation, management, prognosis and factors influencing behavior are reviewed. The immunohistochemical profiles and salient morphologic clues that may help distinguish penile spindle cell tumors from sarcomatoid c

INTRODUCTION: Myxoid soft tissue tumors represent a heterogenous group of neoplasms. The study presented our experience on cytopathology of myxoid soft tissue tumors on fine needle aspiration (FNA) and aimed to apply the recently proposed WHO system for reporting soft tissue cytopathology.
MATERIAL AND METHODS: We performed a 20-year retrospective search of our archives to identify all FNAs performed on myxoid soft tissue lesions. All cases were reviewed, and the WHO reporting system was applied.
RESULTS: 129 FNAs performed in 121 patients (62 males; 59 females) showed a prominent myxoid com

The authors illustrate two neoplasms arising in the pretibial soft tissue that are histologically identical to adamantinoma of the long bones. The tumors developed in a 24-year-old woman and a 31-year-old man. Both were treated by local excision. Histologically, one tumor had a tubular pattern and one was composed of spindled, basaloid cells. One patient is free of disease after 14 months and one developed two recurrences after three and eight years, with the second recurrence invading the underlying tibia. Soft tissue adamantinoma may be confused with a wide range of neoplasms, including syno

Plasma-cell neoplasms are classically categorized into four groups as: multiple myeloma (MM), plasma-cell leukemias, solitary plasmacytomas (SP) of the bone (SPB), and extramedullary plasmacytomas (EMP). These tumors may be described as localized or diffuse in presentation. Localized plasma-cell neoplasms are rare, and include SP of the skeletal system, accounting for 2-5% of all plasma-cell neoplasms, and EMP of soft tissue, accounting for approximately 3% of all such neoplasms. SP is defined as a solitary mass of neoplastic plasma cells either in the bone marrow or in various soft tissue sit

Soft tissue leukaemic masses are a well-described clinical feature of myeloid haematological neoplasms. In paediatric acute lymphoblastic leukaemia (ALL), such soft tissue leukaemic sarcomas have not been reported as a presenting feature. Here we report a 3-year-old boy with ALL who presented to us with isolated soft tissue swellings for a duration of 9 months. The significance of these 'non-myeloid' sarcomas in paediatric ALL is uncertain.

Sarcomas are a rare and extremely diverse set of neoplasms that are often a challenge to diagnose for pathologists. For a number of reasons, primary diagnosis of soft tissue neoplasms is increasingly being performed on small biopsy specimens including fine needle aspiration (FNA) and core needle biopsy (CNB). In the last several years, there has been a significant increase in our understanding of the molecular pathogenesis of this group of tumors. New insights into the genetic mechanisms of tumor formation have been exploited to create a new generation of diagnostic markers that are accessible

Vascular leiomyomas are infrequent benign soft tissue neoplasms arising from vascular wall. These lesions are more frequent in females, predominantly seen in lower extremities presenting as slowly enlarging freely mobile palpable soft tissue lesions, often painful. The role of imaging in small peripheral soft tissue masses is often limited to preoperative mapping with a long list of potential differentials. We are presenting 2 case studies of palpable masses with similar pathology, soft tissue vascular leiomyomas where its MR features can be helpful in inclusion of this entity not only in diff

BACKGROUND: A standardized reporting system for bone and soft tissue tumor cytopathology has not yet been established. The objective of this study was to explore the potential utility of a classification modified from the Milan System for Salivary Gland Cytopathology and compared it with the upcoming World Health Organization (WHO) system for fine-needle aspiration of soft tissue lesions.
METHODS: The authors reviewed 285 cytology cases of bone/joint (n = 173) and soft tissue (n = 112) lesions, scoring each within diagnostic categories. The results were compared with histologic diagnoses and

Ultrasound may be the preferred initial diagnostic modality for the painful swollen extremity, the palpable extremity mass, and the injured extremity. The role of ultrasound in extremity soft tissue abnormalities, including muscle hemorrhage and injury, inflammatory processes, and soft tissue neoplasms, is the subject of this review.

We report 2 primary renal sarcomas demonstrating BCOR-CCNB3 gene fusions that have recently been identified in undifferentiated round cell sarcomas of bone and soft tissue. These neoplasms occurred in male children aged 11 and 12 years, and both were cystic as a result of entrapment and dilatation of native renal tubules. Both cases were composed of variably cellular bland spindle cells with fine chromatin set in myxoid stroma and separated by a branching capillary vasculature. Both neoplasms demonstrated immunoreactivity for BCOR, cyclin D1, TLE1, and SATB2 in the spindle neoplastic cells and

Gross examination of surgical pathology specimens is a foundational component of pathology training and remains essential for the accurate evaluation of resection specimens. Bone and soft tissue tumors represent a rare and diagnostically challenging group of neoplasms that often require specialized expertise and subspecialty training for proper classification. Although definitive diagnosis typically relies on the careful integration of clinical, radiologic, histologic, immunophenotypic, and molecular findings; gross (macroscopic) features can provide valuable early diagnostic clues regarding t

Extraskeletal osteosarcoma is a highly aggressive malignant osteoid forming mesenchymal neoplasm arising from soft tissues which accounts for 1% of all soft tissue sarcomas. We report the case of a 46-year-old female with no significant past medical history presenting to an emergency department with a right lateral thigh mass following minor trauma. She was eventually found to have high grade extraskeletal osteosarcoma with rapid progression of disease resulting in patient demise. Differentiation of these lesions from alternative processes relies on specific imaging and pathologic features. Di
